what year was that? In 1992-93 the Jets had 4 rookies that scored 20 goals - Davydov, Tkachuk, Selanne and Zhamnov. They had two vets who also scored more than 20 - Steen and Darrin Shannon. At that time Winnipeg set the record for having 4 rookies hit 20 goals or more in the same season. I have the Jets book "Coming up Short" by Curtis Walker and he seems to intimate (unless my memory is failing me) that Smith deliberately talked Fergie into trading Babych to the Whalers for Ray Neufeld to sewer Fergie and take his job. Also, among other things Smith did to destroy the Jets: Smith was largely responsible for forcing Dale Hawerchuk, the Jets franchise player, out of Winnipeg. Years later, Hawerchuk would state "In my era there were two Winnipegs. There was the John Ferguson era, which was positive, upbeat, a really community-driven team. And then the Mike Smith era, which was negative and pessimistic. That ran through the media. I thought I'd be a Winnipeg Jet forever, but at the end Mike pretty much made it impossible for me to really push forward with my career there."[11] Smith made some questionable trades that would come back to haunt the Jets. During the Summer of 1993, Smith would send future Olympian, and Frank J. Selke Trophy winner Kris Draper to the Detroit Red Wings for $1.00.[12] Smith would also trade NHL All-Star Phil Housley to the St. Louis Blues for Nelson Emerson and Stephane Quintal. On November 25, 1993, Smith would trade star forward Stu Barnes along with a sixth round selection (previously acquired from the St. Louis Blues; Chris Kibermanis) in 1994 to the Florida Panthers for Randy Gilhen. Mike Smith was mainly responsible for dismantling a young, and promising Winnipeg Jets team. By the time Smith was relieved of his Managing duties in January 1994, the Jets were last in the Western Conference.[13] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Smith_(ice_hockey,_born_1945)

"I don't come over to your place of work and salt the fries" - still one of the best Coach's show lines ever....

who else do we have from Jets 1.0 ready to go as our next coach after Arniel inevitably fails? Doug Smail? Tim Watters? Pierre Hamel?

anyone checking out Dru Brown on CFL+ this afternoon? -
Lapo and an overly conservative vanilla O?

so in other words our defensive strategy should have been:
-
are they also anatomically correct?

Did they though? I wonder how those interviews went? Prospective coach (other than Arniel): let's be honest guys, are you really interested in anyone but Scotty A? Chevy: Yeah, yeah for sure Prospective coach: Really? Chevy: No, not really. We are deliberately wasting your time..."audible sigh"...line click...dial tone...

Speaking of which, got my ticket for the home opener, so psyched to see the Bombers take out their rage for losing last year out on CoFaj and pound the Als into the ground....

2023/2024 CFL (Non Bombers) Off Season News

CTE claims another victim. Sad to see, the guy was a total force when he was in Pittsburgh. -
if I was a non-Winnipeg CFL GM right now, other than a few select teams (and no if I was Sask I wouldn't be running with Trevor Harris), not sure what else I would have done if I had a shot at having Dru as my starter, rather than going with what I had last year. Maybe I'm wrong??

Not arguing with you re competency but I wonder what Lapo could have done with the O-line, QB, receiving corp and defence that MOS has had in place for the past 4 - 5 years. Lapo had to find a way to utilize Aaron Hargreaves and Brock Ralph. We've dramatically increased our player personnel and talent acquisition since then. That being said - even with this level of talent we have now, Tim Burke would have still found a way to go 4-14 this year...lol...

2024 NHL Playoffs Thread

Adam Bighill says hello. -
That's a pretty wide range there. I hope Brown lights it up all year in every game except against us. Then we crush Ottawa in the Grey Cup, and see them driven before us, while we listen to the lamentations of their media...
-
Not exactly. "They" say that if you don't learn from history then you are destined to repeat it.
-
one more year, I think.
-
^^^ Which is why I gave up on the Coach's Show on CJOB and don't bother to listen to it. I admit that I got spoiled in the Kelly year but even Lapo gave some sort of effort at more than one or two word answers to questions. Not worth listening to 45 minutes of commercials to hear zero insight on anything. But hey that's life on that front, I'll take it every day of the week if it means we get to the Cup every year.

maybe DT aka "the Leader" knows...

Wilson seems to be more CFL ready to me, not sure they have room for more than one back up. Though with the way Strevy plays it won't surprise me if he gets banged up at which point we'll need another QB body at some point.
