Buck Pierce set to announce retirement today
kelownabomberfan replied to gbill2004's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
I get that there is a bias towards getting old Bombers to coach here (I'm guilty of it too) and we should always think with our brains and not our hearts but in this case I would say hiring him would be a hearts and brains decision, and a good one at that. Buck's not just a great guy, he's a guy that has management/coaching written all over him. Kind of like Steve Yzerman. I know the Bombers really liked him and didn't really want to trade him, and I think they just wanted to get him on a team that had a shot at a cup while he was still playing. Buck still lives in Winnipeg right? I saw him in some dental ad for Manitoba dentists a few days ago. I would think that this decision to retire is in conjunction with some sort of coaching position with Winnipeg. -
Bombers trade for QB Brian Brohm; cut Justin Goltz
kelownabomberfan replied to Mike's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
Do you have any ballpark figures for a salary for #2? It depends if your number 2 is evil or not. If so, then - $1 BILLION dollars.... -
I toured an old jail in Fremantle Australia last year. The Aussies said during the tour that since the jail had closed the tactics in treating criminals in jail had changed and the prisoners were made to be much more comfortable and the focus was on rehabilitation instead of punishment, which they also said had made the re-offend rate increase by 20%. That's irrelevant in this case as Vince Li was never in jail (at least not for long) and if he goes off the deep end and turns into Hannibal Lecter again he won't care about jail time.

Drew Edwards @scratchingpost 36m Quick analysis of Brohm trade: #Ticsts have a lot of young, promising QBs. The #Bombers do not. Also, Danny Mac must have liked him. #CFL -

I think Goltz sunk himself with his sulking. And according to Walters his contract was too big. -

that is a good point - he meets all the criteria for Marcel - he's old and would accept being overpaid - and at least would give Hank something to throw to. -

so you are blaming Walters for Mack's mistake? What were we supposed to do? Wait for Hamilton to cut him and go into TC with only two QB's? -

kelownabomberfan replied to Mike's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
Goltz was just too inaccurate on his throws. He'd make plays with his legs and then just miss his open receiver by a mile. That's something that I don't see changing, no matter who picks him up. I think JG was gone after he wasn't being used for short yardage anymore, his attitude kind of killed his shot, but also his ability or lack thereof. http://www.bluebombers.com/video/index/id/94829 Video on Goltz release per WBB website. Looks like he was too expensive for what the Bombers thought he would end up on the depth chart this year. I don't see Levi Brown listed on the roster either so I would guess he is gone. -
Chronic foot problems. His career likely over. So he should be signing with the Redblacks any day now.

The mastery of Marcel Desjardins continues...
kelownabomberfan replied to Mr. Perfect's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
Yeah he was also commentating on the NFL playoff games as well for that channel. It was weird to see him on there, especially when they asked him about his coaching experience and if there were any regrets with decisions he had made in taking coaching jobs, and he answered immediately: "Winnipeg". -
I think that is pretty much a given. This guy needed to be on heavy meds for schizophrenia but instead he checked out of/ran away from the Ontario facility before he could be diagnosed. It raises an interesting question - just how much should the state interfere in the rights of the individual if they don't want to seek help for mental issues? Do we as citizens just sit back and wait until the mentally ill chop up and eat someone before we commit them to a facility? The problem with Li was that he didn't do enough to be forcibly committed, and didn't trust "western medicine" so he fell through the cracks, sort of.

I guess I agree on this one - you can't really appeal the NCR, and the only other issue is letting him out unsupervised to be re-integrated, only five years after the fact. As I said earlier, no one really knows what is going to happen. I don't think that there is one person here who can truthfully say they'd be comfortable with their son or daughter taking a cross-Canada Greyhound bus ride with him, no matter what the doctors and mental health experts say. That's human nature, and in my view, nothing to be ashamed of, especially given the horrific nature of the crime.

And I'm amazed that you want to introduce red herrings into this thread. If that's all you want to do, then please add nothing further to this thread.

Heritage Classic Vancouver - What's The Point?
kelownabomberfan replied to iso_55's topic in General Discussion
because no one cares about Vancouver or Ottawa. Seriously two of the shittiest all time franchises ever. At least Edmonton had their glory years and Calgary even had one cup in their history. Neither team in this one has ever won **** and no one cares about them at all. They care about the Canucks here in BC when they are winning. Suddenly everyone is on the bandwagon, which is really sad to see. Canucks fans are the biggest band-wagon jumpers in Canada, and the biggest ******-bags. I witnessed a verbal sparring match between some Canucks and Oiler fans last year at a game, the Canucks fans were ribbing the Oiler fans and telling them how bad they sucked, and the Oiler fans just responded with "how many Cups you guys got? Oh yeah you're the 42 year old virgins". -
It appears that while he was "undiagnosed" he was put in a mental facility in 2005 in Toronto and given some meds, but he left as he refused treatment. http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/local/tormented_by_mental_illness-40769547.html

If he is brandishing a knife, and refuses to surrender, then I would hope the cops have the authority, legally, to take him down. Otherwise, if cops can't defend themselves then what's the point of giving them guns? I looked back at some old stories, and it seems that the Mclean family sued the RCMP for not acting more decisively. Here's one take on the RCMP's actions I found: http://www2.macleans.ca/2009/03/26/the-silence-of-the-canadian-lambs/2/

Mark - sorry to hear about your friend. That's horrible. I just didn't see and still don't see how drunk driving is related to this topic. We could introduce one hundred red herrings about stupid decisions made by humans that led to the death of other humans and how those people were put in jail and are now out, but it doesn't really relate to this specific story. Anyway, once again, sorry to hear about your friend. I read the article, and I get the fact that this guy was found NCR. I also get that it's "naïve" of anyone to question the doctors making the decisionto let him go out unsupervised as of course they are the intelligent experts and we're all dumb so our opinions don't matter, and of course, we all lack "common sense", whatever the hell that is. We just have to keep our emotions in check here and see what happens. And that's the reality here, no one knows what is going to happen. Hopefully in 20 years, the name of Vince Li is forgotten, and his reintegration into society was successful. Maybe you guys will one day end up sitting beside him at a Jets game, or buying him a beer at a wedding social, and not even know it. We don't know if he will re-offend, but we do know what he is capable of if he does. So that's that.

I can not recall where I read it, but reportedly Harris wants to be here full time, I suppose a lot will depend on how BC uses him this year. Last year he was none too happy with how the offense was run. I heard he has a gf/wife and kid in New Bothwell (small town near Steinbach) and he spends his off-seasons there? Nope, yer talking about Vic Toews. LOL my bad.
-
If we do, IMO the season is already over. I expect that Danny Mac and gang have made finding a fourth QB for camp a high priority.

and then he can work in the off-season at the Ugandan consulate. -
I've contributed a lot to this thread, Mike, including posting a link to an article in the Sun that I disagreed with, but thought it relevant. Yeah I've added some offensive humour, but it's only in response to the extremely offensive bleeding heart nonsense I've seen posted here (drunk driving - shame on you guys for dragging that issue into this discussion), so now we're both offended, and I really didn't want to get into name-calling etc as that just takes away from the debate. I agree that this is an emotional issue and given we are human it's basically impossible to separate the emotion here, especially when given the gruesome nature of what happened. I blame Li for his actions (for going off his meds when he knew he was ill, at the very least) but I also blame the RCMP for just standing around for hours, just letting it happen. If this had happened a few hundred miles south Li would have waved his knife and head of the victim at the cops and gotten a double tap to the heart and one between the eyes and the cannibalism would have never happened. But it did, and they just sat there watching, and I've never really felt the RCMP apologized for that. Part of the issue here too is perspective. Some of us are old enough to have nephews and in Iso's case sons that are the same age as the poor guy who was killed and eaten by this nutbar and when you have sons that age, all you can think about is what would have happened and how you would have felt if that boy had been your kid. I can't imagine the trauma and suffering of that family who had to endure that. To watch a guy do that to your beautiful loved son and then get to walk free after a few years of "treatment" just defies all logic and reason. A guy in Edmonton just got 26 months in prison for killing a police dog for goodness sakes. So I know where Iso is coming from here. Should we just blindly trust our doctors and physicians in these cases? Well ok. But the fact that he's now considered a safe risk to the public is only half the issue here. It just doesn't seem to some of us that this guy has truly paid for what he did, and I'm not going to apologize for feeling that way, even if it's "borderline offensive" to some of you.

He chose to not take his meds? I didn't know that, I thought he was just undiagnosed prior to the crime. To me that's the biggest thing. I don't remember the whole story, but if you choose to go off your meds you should never see freedom again. If he was undiagnosed, it's an entirely different situation. I would still never let him go completely unsupervised though. Make him check in every night to ensure he takes his meds would be my solution. All I know is that for the rest of this guy's life, we'll be paying for him to have his treatment. Perhaps they should have a "Do you like to eat people - Y/N" question on the immigrant application. Maybe he wants to move back where he came from, but that would mean he'd have to eat Chinese every night.
