  1. Don't mind the Stafford signing. Montreal was such a gong show last year, tough to judge any player under those conditions, and the guy had a nose for the endzone when he played in Edmonton. I think that Denmark is gone. Why would he want to sign with a team that's so crowded at import receiver, especially when there are clean slates out east? Were the Bombers even talking to him before they brought in Stafford? Denny is the receiver version of Kevin Glenn, good player with flashes of brilliance who gets no respect.
  2. Funny how Smith's game suddenly caught fire as soon as they stopped throwing him dumb little 5 yard curls and ins and started sending him vertical... I suspect Denmark won't be here next year. Could see him getting some heavy FA love from out east, they're all depleted at receiver, esp. Toronto and Ottawa, and Montreal won't have SJG before labour day. Or maybe we trade Smith out east and resign Denny? That'd be the fan-pleasing move.
  3. We don't know much about what happened with the Kylo's Knights of Ren buddies that we see in TFA's flashback. The rule with these new darkside guys might not be "one master, one apprentice." There might be a whole bunch of Rens out there mopefucking the galaxy.
  4. People who are good at cybersecurity don't work for governments. The private sector pays way, way more.
  5. Definitely want to see James Murphy's #21 up on the Ring of Honor at some point. We were stacked with receivers in the eighties and he was the best of them. He accounted for pretty much all of our offense in the 1988 Grey Cup.
  6. This move is worse than Kelly cutting Glenn in 2009. At least Mike Kelly had his chosen successor in hand when he moved on from his established starter.
  7. Funny post, but I think that Jade Etienne for Willy is a more apt comparison.
  8. Good on Lirim H. He was just as accurate on field goals as Medlock last year (albeit he only had 2/3 as many attempts) and was 100% on one-point converts. Pretty special when you think back to how he was snakebit on converts in 2015. Nothing better than seeing a kicked-around player kill it like that. (edit: the CFL website is confused about whether he missed any converts, http://www.cfl.ca/stats/?stat_category=field_goals&season=2016 says he was 28/28 but http://www.cfl.ca/players/lirim-hajrullahu/160189/ says he was 32/34. No idea which is right. Anyway, congrats to him on the extension)
  9. Can't say much about Forest Whittaker's acting, but I gotta say I really liked Saw Gererra's look. Dude had some serious mileage on him. He's what Vader would look like if the Emperor had built him in the garage. I like FW generally, though. I thought he was great in Arrival, which is a great movie that everyone should see.
  10. The thing that is frustrating about all this Trump-centred discussion ... is that while the Trump circus is putting up its tents, no one is noticing that across town, Paul Ryan is pouring gasoline in hospital basements. The guy intends to privatize Medicare and Social Security and repeal the ACA. He's terrifying lots of Americans who depend on government services. As scary as Trump is, I'm more worried about what's going to come out of Congress. At least Trump has a patina of independence to him that might lead him to object when Congress takes away the health insurance of millions.
  11. I know that this is the CFL and there's lots of player migration, but it's totally weird to imagine Durant in a Montreal uniform after all the great Durant / Calvillo duels back in the day. Kinda like seeing Roy Dewalt in blue and gold.
  12. Seems like a courtesy move, giving him that extra month to find a new job. Or maybe they think Glenn's early availability will soften up the FA QB market?
  13. Didn't Davis get all the #2 reps in practice last year after Kevin Glenn arrived?
  14. Man, Delvin Breaux's biography is crazy. He broke three vertebrae in high school, his college still honored his scholarship, he was kind of a player-coach in college for awhile, then he went to play in the super low minors (the Louisiana Bayou Vipers of the Gridiron Developmental Football League?) and onward to the AFL and Hamilton and today the NFL. Nice story.
  15. Saw it. Thought it was pretty good, but not super amazing. All the characters were likable, but none of them leapt off the screen. The weird story beat where the Alliance isn't in on the mission, then suddenly they are, felt like a bit of a waste, it was brought up and then just dismissed. Wonder if that plot point had a bigger focus in previous versions of the story.
  16. Yeah, Wylie Turner was #28 too, back in the eighties.
  17. I was talking in the original thread about how hard it can be to get jury convictions in the USA when cops or civilians shoot minorities. The Walter Scott trial just ended in a hung-jury mistrial -- one or more jurors refused to convict the killer. This, despite the fact that a bystander video shows an unarmed Scott being shot in the back repeatedly by the cop. The cop drops his taser next to the fallen man and says in his paperwork that Scott took the taser from him in a struggle. Only good news: the prosecution says they're going to retry the case. Film the police, man.
  18. Maybe they will catch some of the millions of fraudulent votes that Trump believes in...
  19. Republicans are now fighting the recount efforts in the great lakes states. I thought the election was rigged! Why not take the time, count the paper ballots and make sure it wasn't actually rigged?
  20. No biggie. Gonna step away from this conversation, I think that ultimately yogi and tburg have it right ... hot takes aren't super helpful right now and that hopefully forensic evidence will clarify what happened. But I am super cynical about all of this -- about whether this was a "justified" shooting and about whether justice will be served if it wasn't. Respects and condolences to McKnight's family, friends, and teammates.
  21. This guy wasn't even a cop!
  22. It can be tricky to get jury convictions in cases like this.
  23. http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/joe-mcknight-shooter-released-charged-article-1.2895977 'Gasser then stood over the victim and barked, “I told you don’t you (expletive) with me,” before firing a final shot.' Sounds legit to me. It's outrageous how the race hustlers and social justice types will exploit this justified and noble act of self-defence to further deepen the racial divide in the USA. They are the problem!
  24. Re: immigration laws being racist... There was a brief time when I was "illegally" in the US. I overstayed my work visa for a few months to get married and apply for a green card. Not a big deal, the INS people reviewing my application didn't care about it and my attorney wasn't overly concerned. But if I'd run afoul of a cop or anything, my life could get complicated. A lot of immigation enforcement, like any law enforcement, is at the discretion of the enforcing officer. My attorney told me to keep a low profile. During that stretch, I took a car trip down to San Diego. The INS had a checkpoint on I-5. They shut down the whole damn freeway -- all five northbound lanes, parking hundreds or thousands of cars -- and had agents prowling around with big flashlights, peering into the stopped cars. They flashed the lights on my face and my wife's face and then moved on. As a white guy driving a shitty beat-up Taurus full of luggage, I was not the illegal immigrant they were looking for. White privilege is real, don't let anyone tell you it isn't. Think about people in the opposite situation to mine -- a brown person who's a legit resident of America. In border communities that person is under constant suspicion of being an illegal immigrant. Arizona passed a law recently that allowed state and local police to challenge the legal residency of anyone for any reason and to detain people until those facts are settled. That really, really sucks for the ~25% of legit Arizonans who are Hispanic, or who look like they are. This is why immigration laws can be regarded as racist: people who have done nothing wrong are being hassled because of the color of their skin.
  25. The cheesiest feature of the modern CFL is the desperation fishing expedition where the coach looks for a chintzy illegal contact penalty to keep a drive alive. Appeals should be for courtrooms, not sports fields. But if we've gotta have PI challenges in the game, how about limiting them to just the intended receiver? And I like the idea of allowing slow motion only under certain circumstances, like for fumbles and sideline calls. I've got a lot of sympathy for the officials. Seven guys have to watch 24 players across thousands of square yards of field and they have to judge plays that last tenths of a second where tiny details like hand placement matter. I'm impressed they get it right as often as they do. I think that the game may be too fast for human beings to officiate perfectly.
