Westerman vs. the Montreal OL:

It's funny how exactly these teams match up -- both teams have pocket passers with questionable OL and a pedigreed receiving corps. Both teams have fearsome (on paper) front sevens and secondaries that have some question marks. Even the kickers look like a wash -- Bede was a 90% kicker last year. Only daylight I see between them is that I like our RB better, but I don't know how healthy our RB is.

Remember the Phillip Hunt vs. Simeon Rottier game on opening day 2010? When Hunt buried Glenn over and over because Rottier just could not deal with him? That is what I would like to see. As a fan of the whole league, I'm interested to see what Cato looks like after a year of experience and Calvillo coaching. Is he gonna progress or has he hit his ceiling already?

A little of both, I think. The Argos D looked Stublery soft, lots of wide-open spaces for receivers to run to and Masoli hit them. That said, I thought Masoli looked good in the pocket, he moved smoothly away from the rush on a number of plays. And he took care of the ball, tho I remember him clanking at least one pass off an Argos DB's hands.

yeah, that Stanford story is shitty and heartbreaking -- but in the past, I'm not sure it would have been a national story, it just would have quietly gone away, so there's that.

yeah, hindsight is 20/20 but you have to wonder about keeping the 36-year-old with a banged-up shoulder over the young heir apparent.

yay! CFL is back! Don't really care who wins, just wanna see a classic CFL game in an exciting new venue with an enthusiastic crowd. I'm curious to see if Masoli is a one-game wonder. I always root for newer QBs entering the CFL, because unless we have sufficient QB talent, our league's games suck. My stream tonight is from the UK so it'll be interesting to see if any Brexit news leaks in...

I saw him on the sidelines in the Ottawa game, I think. The #1 makes him easy to spot.

Flanders caught a couple of passes against Montreal and looked fine. I'm way more concerned about taking McDuffie or Wild off the field than I am about the Harris to Flanders dropoff. (edit) The big question I have about Flanders is his blocking ability. So many of our huge QB shots have come when the RB has whiffed on his block or jumped entirely the wrong way

I am shocked, shocked, shocked to hear that athletes are speaking to the media in rote cliches. When did this start happening? Never mind his skill as a public speaker or interview subject -- what I really want to know is, how good a machinist is he? Because if he can't move his hands precisely enough to make a candlestick on a lathe that may mean he lacks the physical dexterity to play quarterback in the CFL. And what about Khalil Bass's guitar chops? If he can't crush Stairway to Heaven how can he crush running backs?

Gonna try a "clever" pick here: the new redblack RB Travon Van. He looked good in the preseason game against us.

Williams scored a sweet TD on a nice throwback pass against Montreal and he got cut. Veltung did less. I liked the calls at receiver. McDuffie looks like a CFL playmaker and Sheppard and Mayo both showed they could deliver, at least in the pre-season. Gotta say I'm surprised at the patience with Jace Davis tho.

Last year's excellent injury replacement lost for the season in preseason. Shades of Chris Garrett. Same injury, even.

Voivod! Weirdo Northern Quebecois jazz/progressive/thrash metal. Loved this guys forever but had never seen them headline a club gig until last weekend. This song was a highlight. They're playing Winnipeg and Thunder Bay (!!!!) soon.
