CFL - 2023 Regular Season - Discussion Thread
JuranBoldenRules replied to JCon's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
I’d be surprised if more than 4 teams keep their existing QB situation into next season. Winnipeg and Toronto are for sure. Everyone else will be looking at improvements including BC depending on how their season ends. There will be 5-6 teams in the QB market. -

All prorated by 18 games of course. Augustine is paid for the year now anyway. 120-70 is 50 -

Put the number down then. Neufeld all in this season will be around $160,000. He's hit roster bonuses and will hit playtime ones, he's already banked about $15,000 on top of his base for those. Gray is in the Oliviera range, $115 hard with some roster and playtime incentives. Also a free agent after this season and with the shitty OL play (Sask is paying far worse players a bunch more) around the league he'll be more in the Neufeld range next year. Chungh for example all in is up around $200 k. Dobson they only have to increase if they are extending him. He's in his option year next year. -

Dobson is option year of his rookie deal next year. $75,000 hard money. Eli already on the books. Neufeld all in with roster bonuses and housing pushing $160,000. Bryant up at $190,000. Hardrick $160,000 with incentives. If Neufeld goes we already have the replacement here, likely replacing that 7th OL spot with a kick chasing draft pick backup LB/DB/receiver/RB at $71,000. $160 - 71, so about 90,000 hard money. Darby on his free agent deal from Hamilton still. Walters pushed BA's bonus money into 2022 and signed him to a full hard money deal for less this year to cover that off. Bailey has incentives that he will hit for playing snaps and being on the roster. Augustine next year with minimum rising will be about 50-55k difference if replacement is a draft pick. Augustine won't hit any of his offensive play time bonuses but hit all the roster ones. He's in the $115,000 range with that. If it's a vet will be less savings. -

I think in the last two drafts there's 3 OL playing regularly in the CFL this year. There's a lot of NFLers in there and a bunch deferred. This will be the first somewhat normal draft after the pandemic. -

It would be crazy to me if they didn't. He has no role in the offense for that amount of money and is not a good special teams player. Calgary was going right at him and walling off the contain main on the kick side for punt. There's lots of Canadian backs around too. Would be nice to have that H back type guy who could be passable in the backfield if really needed, at least manage pass protection if Oliviera had to go out. -

Oliviera about $115,000 with roster/housing plus some incentives. Augustine is about $110,000 with his roster/housing bonuses, don't think he'll reach any other incentives. 50-55k saving if it's a rookie Canadian. Less if it's a guy further along his career. Mike Miller is another one opening up some money they might be able to use this year. He's about $100,000 after housing. -
They don't get to dress another American elsewhere though. Player is still a QB for the roster, but counts toward the 7 Canadian starters. Likely need another Canadian starter anyway unless you have a Canadian backup QB.

Kramdi is on a rookie deal and if he's healthy they'll want him back but he might be looking east. -

Oliviera is not on a rookie deal. Bailey and Darby are well into six figures. Replace them with a rookie is 60-80k each. Replace Neufeld with Dobson/Eli, that's almost 100k. Augustine with a rookie is 60k difference. -
Glenn definitely did. Not sure about Nichols. Pierce maybe, know he started 2010 but blew up his elbow toward the end of the 4th Q, don't think he made it to 2012.

The Rourke stuff is insufferable. Dozens of Canadians in NCAA and NFL. Not even half the hype around Tre Ford at any point here. Wonder why TSN is so far up the Rourke families butts. -

Mayala would be a nice add to the PR. But I assume he'll be another castoff returning to the receiving corps in Calgary. -

Years in NFL, full season as starter in NFL Europe, half a season on the sideline here, and was the backup to Glenn who was injured when Martin got in. Not quite which narrative you’re remembering. -
Dolegala has a way higher ceiling than Fine if you want something to fear for LDC oddity. Reminds me a lot of Bishop, could come out and chuck a bunch of TDs. I’m personally 0-8 and only attended two where the game was even up for grabs under the 3 min warning of the 8. I’ll be watching at home.

I'd bet my life on him being a more productive NFL player today than anyone 5th on a NFL depth chart today (the last or 2nd last receiver dressed). I can't believe some of the teams that run more spread stuff and use more receivers didn't sign him. -

Does Ford have a certain length of time to catch on? Before guys couldn't sign to PR and had 10 days after release to get on an active roster otherwise had to report back to CFL team. -

I think they literally started like 30 different DB's that season. A mix of guys cast off elsewhere and rookies. Marcus Howell played DB. Geoff Drover played safety. -

Rust was also like 80 years old and missed half of each of the two seasons he’d coached before due to health, one was when he was Montreal’s head coach. Those were the days when the organization was extremely poor but also cheap so no one wanted to work here. -
Pigrome continues to be unable to execute the wedge. And Ottawa keeps sending him into the pile. Stupid, stupid, stupid. If you're so committed to that play leave Crum in.

Those guys are fringe NFL players. The guys coming up here are basically done with the NFL or never even got a look. -
Ottawa, Montreal, BC, Calgary, Hamilton, Edmonton and Sask will all be in the QB market next off-season. There's no chance Crum or Powell are taken into next season as franchise QB's. Both are on rookie deals, those teams will have money to spend on another QB. Fajardo cannot score points at all. They've scored 3 offensive TD's in a game once with Fajardo starting. Their braintrust might be stupid enough to think he's their franchise QB, but they'd be stupid for sure. Maier has been mostly terrible and frustration from Dickenson is palpable in his post-game scrums. If there was a viable move for them to make today to move Maier to the sideline I believe they'd take it. They will be in the market, and they don't have to worry about $$$ because they'll have a trade market for Maier among the teams that don't get Brown if they were able to sign him. Adams is just good enough to lose. I think BC will quite likely be disappointed at the end of this season and will be tempted to make a change at QB to someone with more consistency as a passer. Adams will get ugly like Fajardo as his mobility wanes with age. He can't play from the pocket.
-
Powell's major weakness is low mobility/athleticism. If he gets moved off his first couple reads and has to get out the play is basically dead. He is really ideal for the more "West Coast" style scheme which is what Milanovich will fall toward schematically anyways, drop and fire. Shiltz will be a nice complement as a role player to run more of an option package.
