  1. This can't be right. The rest of the league has more than 1 defensive TD for sure, the Bombers have one, I believe Edmonton and Montreal have a few. Toronto scored a special teams one on us this week.
  2. a. block the inside guys so that the rush has to come form the outside b. roll the pocket left or right c. hit the hot pass routes d. draw play up the middle e. buy the QB a condolence card after apologizing profusely f. get another QB onto the field after carting the previous one off This is what they are missing so often, and that's not scheme, that's basic. Also when guys get plain beat there's nothing scheme can do. They could run more screens, but our OL can't block anything right now. Our RB's lead the league in yards after contact for a reason, and they don't even have a lot of yards. Pretty much all of them are after contact, it's truly pathetic. Walters needs to make a move on this bye to get a couple OL in, probably imports. I agree with most of this but you can't ignore the fact that MB empties the backfield a lot. Add to this fact that other teams realize that bombers don't run screens very often and that's a perfect storm. A new OL probably won't change that... Again, that being said, I'd bring in an import Centre and put Picard on notice. And another import LB for PR. Pick up one of the vet DL that are sitting at home too. It all depends on what they are facing. Hamilton puts 7-8 guys on the line of scrimmage pretty much all the time. They usually rush between 3 and 5, but you don't know which ones are coming and which ones are dropping into coverage. So you have guys dropping into short zones from the line of scrimmage. Trying to run screen game against that would be counter productive and likely lead to turnovers. Edmonton is pretty similar. You gotta get the ball on the outside or down the field very fast. Against everyone else the screens to the running backs have been plentiful, it's too bad Cotton's dropped about 6 of them. Having extra blockers only helps if everyone executes their assignments. You could have 9 guys lined up to block and if Picard and Neufeld miscommunicate or get flat out beat it won't matter. Maybe they can line up Pontbriand and Cronk behind both guards to at least provide some difficulty to opposing DT's.
  3. I'd interview Himebauch, Dinwiddie, Jarious Jackson and Khari Jones. Chances are most of those guys wouldn't leave where they are now to come here in the upcoming off-season.
  4. Burris started with Calgary. He was a "castoff" signed to a mega free agent deal by the Riders in 2000.
  5. Why would you do that? The defense has been lights out for a month. Hurl is doing his job, which is often to take an inside gap and play through there. The Bombers are playing the 5-1 front a ton, they call it "Cowboy," with Hurl right up at the line. Bass is making plays from his spot 5 yards back of the line. Not sure why people are continuing on Hurl. He's not a problem, actually playing quite well. Personally I think Bass can cover a lot more ground sideline to sideline so swapping him and Hurl in this defense makes no sense.
  6. Fans here would hate Chapdelaine. "Why don't we run the ball" would become the popular refrain. He's actually quite similar to Bellefeuille, except he loves the bunch formation and combo routes. Runs a lot of empty backfield.
  7. That's kind of normal league-wide right now. Marve took a forearm to the head on the first play of the final drive against the Argos and had a few outside the pocket where he got hit by two guys with the second guy coming in very late. Lots of dirty shots on QB's, and not many flags for the actual shots that are the ones likely to cause injury. IMO the Bombers get it worse than most teams because they don't respond to that stuff physically on either side of the ball. Would be nice to see that spark.

  9. Nope. 3rd in the East has 4 wins. Bombers have 3. Tied for 3rd in the West.
  10. 17-14 with a quarter left seals the deal? Hajrullahu is not a good punter. He's got a big leg but his directional kicking is too inconsistent. The cover team sets up to cover the kick going to a certain area, when the kick is 15 yards wide of that, the returner has a bunch of field to work with and basically one guy to beat before the kicker. He's also inconsistent in terms of how long it takes him to get the ball off. We've had 3 blocked and many more close calls. Ideally we'd have a punter who is a punter. Lirim should practice his punts between the 20s as much as he practices the coffin corner, cause those are the ones that are killing us.
  11. I like the idea of Wade because he'd kick some ass. Enough of this "need to look at the film" or coddling the players. You don't perform...you're cut. You should watch some of Austin's post-games from the last couple years, most of them are up on Drew Edwards blog. Extremely rare for coaches to single out players publicly, and even "kick ass" coaches in the opinion of the masses don't do it.
  12. Sounds like your neighbourhood was the first to be fogged for mosquitoes tonight.
  13. My guess is that they had the next play in to Marve if it was 3rd and longer than a couple yards or a first down, same play, before that 2nd down play. Hard to really prepare for the scenario they ended up in with it being 3rd and almost 2 yards. Harder with a very inexperienced QB who was obviously fighting pretty hard just to get through the game at that point. The read option wouldn't be a bad call because you are isolating one defender and giving two of your better guys with the ball, Marve and Marshall a chance to get it done. By that point it seemed to me that Marve's ability to throw more than about 7-8 yards vertically down the field was severely compromised. Hard to prepare??? Maybe if your soft in the head but not for anyone on the staff of a professional football team it shouldn't be. And Marve wasn't having any trouble throwing more than 8 yards, he just completed a 19 yarder. 3rd and almost 2 when you're in hurry-up at 24 seconds is pretty unusual. They had to switch out of the play they had called for either 3rd and long or 1st and 10. Not easy for any QB to get organized, worse for a rookie. You think they ran through that scenario in their one practice in a thunderstorm this week?
  14. It seems pretty clear that he's not focused on football. You become a dog pretty quick when you aren't working as hard as the rest of the people competing for spots on pro teams. He was brutal in the NFL vet combine and when they kept showing him during pre-game in Ottawa I was wondering if he was going to put on a sports bra. Doesn't look to be in good shape at all.
  15. And back to the pro wrestling made up storyline drama....
  16. Starts with H, ends in ajrullahu. He's extremely inconsistent, especially as a punter. He can hit a coffin corner kick and then 5 minutes later hit one right up the seam 25 yards away from where it needs to be. Stoudermire has stunk too, although better this week in that he didn't have any backbreaking gaffes. On the whole special teams has been pretty good otherwise.
  17. If Khari Jones isn't qualified to be a CFL OC, who is? He's been an assistant on the offensive side for almost a decade, including 2 stints as an OC. Are you really wondering why an assistant coach has bounced around? Khari's actually done pretty good, I don't think he's been anywhere less than 2 seasons yet.
  18. He was pretty good, obviously inexperienced. Biggest problem is he's always injured.
  19. Yes, and bring in an American interior guy, don't play a tackle at guard as we have anytime we've went to 3 imports on the OL. I don't know how they can keep running Greaves/Neufeld and Picard out there. Starting QB knocked out of 3 games already. A good game for them is having the QB rocked in the pocket only a half-dozen times.
  20. The issue with this whole thing was making it a long-running reality show. I lost a lot of respect for Sam when he took that route of actively seeking media attention instead of just going about his business and more or less dealing with the media crap as it came up. Like for instance having a press conference in Montreal when he signed. When is the last time an import who has never played a down in the CFL or NFL for that matter had a press conference to announce their signing? If I'm Sam I'm telling Jim Popp and whoever else to handle my signing how you would any other. It's clear that Sam saw $$$ in things like that. I hope he saved up some money at least, but it was pretty clear from the time of his NFL Draft that he was on the path of media exploitation. He was always a marginal player on either side of the border, I don't think he needed the added media pressure, and I think he could have avoided quite a bit of it.

  22. Kind of like how Jeff Garcia wasn't available for the Al's last year? Oh no, wait. He was. And now he's an assistant OC in the NFL. Garcia was still thinking about playing last year. That was a pretty unique circumstance. So unique that it's not even worthwhile to try to use to make an argument.
  23. How do you know he doesn't? Maybe Willy doesn't do the check down to them. Maybe he changes the play slightly. I agree though - they gotta be more creative for pressure packages as when a defense brings more than the players left in to block, there are at least TWO open players on that play right at the start - and the QB's job is to find them. Cavillo could - Khari Jones could - that's the best way to protect against the blitz. Burn it a few times and the defense has to change their tactics or get blown out How do you check down to a screen? That's an extremely set play because of the blocking required. If Willy wasn't throwing called screens it would be very noticeable. You're describing hot routes, and no doubt they have them called, it's a silent communication between QB and receiver to read the blitz and know where the ball is going. Problem in a lot of games for this team is that the QB doesn't even have time to throw those because by the time he gets the ball there's a defender in his face. I've never seen anything quite like it even last season. I think Picard's crappy snaps have made our OL even worse along with the fact he couldn't block a fifth grader.
  24. The fact that the Bombers signed Picard should tell you all you need to know. They obviously don't think Goosen can do the job yet (ever??) or they wouldn't have spent the money on a vet. And since we have no first round pick next spring we'll be spending even more money on OL free agents in the future. There's no OL after the first round? Seems to me there was a guy snapping for the New York Giants today who went in the 3rd round a few years back.
  25. Why did O'Shea put them in that position? With a 20-14 lead the Bombers are stopped on offense deep in their own end. O'Shea sends LH out to punt from his own end zone. Lirim out-kicks the coverage and the Argos bring the punt all the way to the house. Score: 21-20 Argos. The game is over at this point as the momentum shifts in Toronto's favour and the Bombers never score another point. Why doesn't O'Shea have LH take a safety giving up two points. The argos then can: a. Scrimmage at their own 35-yard line, b. kickoff from their own 35-yard line or, c. Accept a kickoff from the 25-yard line of the team who conceded the safety touch. Either way, we preserve the lead at 20-16 and probably gain tremendous field position? Isn't this another coaching blunder of epic proportions by O'Shea that proves he doesn't know what he is doing out there? Am I wrong about the safety? Yes you are wrong. The way the defense was playing there's no reason to give the safety. Hajrullahu was kicking with a strong wind, should have been able to net 45 on that kick easy. Hajrullahu hit a terrible punt in the middle of the field. The goal is to put it between the numbers and the sideline. Just a terrible kick, no coaching mistakes, unless you think we should get a better punter.
