Maybe they should play those guys.

Hamilton has a way better DL in terms of outright talent and they'll send anybody on a blitz. BC didn't really send more than LB's. I don't like that they are leaving it on Picard to guess as to who Hamilton is sending, just block it up from the inside out and give Willy a chance instead of rolling the dice.
-
Well sure, they're just doing what they were told to do on that particular play-call. That LB wasn't supposed to be there and neither had a clue that he might be their responsibility. If they were that stupid they wouldn't get anywhere near professional football. That's like saying a left winger in the NHL is too dumb to realize the high guy on the left side of the ice is his responsibility in the D zone whether it's a D or a forward who slips back. The play call rarely has a specific protection called unless it's a rollout. Picard and to a lesser extent Willy are setting that at the line based on the front.

They play guard?

This is a baffling thing about the Neufeld trade... he was like that in Sask as well. He only looked good at RT but he's never gotten a look there. I was a Picard fan, but sure is looking like his best before date has passed... then again, whoever we plug and play - for years now - just seems to deteriorate... remember when Jones, Knapp were our saviours? Teams know that if they load the box Bellefuile will crumble... why abandon the run in this game? It was working and the score was so out of hand, just take it one play at a time... Neufeld didn't look good at RT, he hasn't really looked good anywhere as a Bomber for more than a game at a time. I watched the entire Riders-Stamps playoff game from 2012 when we got Neufeld and the Riders almost always had a back or tight end on his outside hip widening the rush lanes and helping him out, he still struggled to find a block and get his hands on anyone. That was before he snapped his leg. I doubt his mobility is any better. He's better matched physically with ends in terms of strength but doesn't have the athleticism to stop them from turning the corner on him at 5 yards. Hamilton wasn't really sending a ton of rushers in terms of numbers, they just disguise who is coming very well. If the Bombers went into a basic pocket protection scheme, protect inside gaps and give the QB a chance to read the blitz and hit hot routes behind it they would have had a reasonable chance to move the ball consistently. You gotta block gaps, not players when teams are sending anyone on a blitz, that's the only way to give a QB a chance. Also might have simplified things to get the OL on the same page. They seemed completely confused and out of sync, Neufeld in particular stood out as chasing guys far away from his basic responsibility to his inside gap and not moving in sync with the line when they went to slide protections at times when Picard called them to meet the blitz off the edge.

No kidding. People get caught in the "if this, then that" cause and effect trap. Austin is coaching a great team. Austin yells and turns red, coaches who yell and turn red win. When he was coaching an average team (I realize they ended up in the Grey Cup from the weak East) everyone called him an idiot for his outbursts just like they call out O'Shea for seemingly being soft on players. O'Shea is coaching a team with flawed personnel. No amount of yelling at a Pat Neufeld or other guys who blow assignments mentally or physically is going to make them better football players.
-
Just cause O'Shea doesn't have every capillary in his face burst when he gives someone **** doesn't mean he doesn't give someone ****. Pretty much everytime someone takes a UR or otherwise stupid 15 yarder or when Stoudermire does his stupid crap, O'Shea gives them ****.

Will probably be a good game. Both killed by Edmonton, both really close with Calgary and Montreal. I don't believe Ottawa will put up much resistance to Hamilton either. The Bombers, Ottawa, Montreal and Calgary are pretty even IMO. I think BC and Saskatchewan are the worst teams right now. Hamilton, Edmonton and Toronto are the best teams, Toronto is a little inconsistent.

Bellefeuille and to a lesser extent Willy holding onto the ball too long are the problems with protection. The actual OL isn't the primary problem. Flat out wrong. Willy had guys in his face when he got the snap on numerous occasions. About the only sack he took where he held the ball for even a remotely longer than he should have was a 2nd and 20 when he needed extra time to let the guys downfield get open to try and convert. The OL is the entire problem with the offense. It is abysmal and was even bad by the low standard they've set for themselves tonight. They looked like they were running different plays than the guy next to them far too often. Nobody should ever come through untouched between the inside gaps of the OT's and OG's and it happened at least a dozen times tonight to all 3 QB's.
-
Would have loved to see Maas here... but signing Ellingson, Jackson, Sinopoli, Price, Rogers solved Ottawa's offensive problems... When they play average teams like themselves or bad ones. Killed by Edmonton, likely to be killed by Hamilton and Toronto.
-
Here's my beef with the whole OL thing, Bomber specific and the league to some extent. Why put guys out there who you know can't do the job? Priority #1 for the whole team, not just the offense needs to be protecting the QB. Especially for a team like the Bombers who are obviously reliant on Willy to be able to compete. Use 3 imports on the OL if you have to, and bring in an import who knows how to play the interior positions, not just a tackle who you're going to slide inside and be just as bad as the NI guy. Neufeld clearly missed a lot of Picard's calls or just wasn't in this game. A lot of slide protections he just opened up out of his stance like they were doing a regular pocket with no movement, other times he chased guys off the line which opened up his inside gap and completely killed the play. When he does get his hands on somebody he's a below-average blocker. Picard is worse. If Goossen truly isn't an option at this point he must be just terrible. If I'm Walters I'm looking at getting import help for the interior.

All the big mistakes, the direct to points ones were individual breakdowns. Hard to call out the response of the whole team based on that. Hamilton's offense didn't do much. D responded when they got a chance. Banks didn't do much. OL just isn't good enough to sustain drives, mentally and somewhat physically. Stoudermire is an idiot who is trying to do too much. I have no issue with about 40 of the 44 who played today. Get a LG, C, KR who are average to good CFL players and this team is in the 9-11 win range.
-
I think it is for the most part. The OL is horrid, Stoudermire keeps doing stupid stuff. Defense showing signs of being very solid and resilient, only really one TD on them today and it was a big play.
-
Stoudermire had some good returns, but hard to keep him out there at a gaffe per game, costing the team points with bonehead decisions.
-
Maybe if he's the long snapper which could make some sense with the new coverage rules on punts.
-
IMO Kohlert, Feoli-Gudino and probably the couple younger Canadians are far better receivers than Gordon and this point. He looked like he had no clue on how to run his routes to get open in both preseason games and definitely no clue on how to adjust his routes to get open based on the coverage being played. Natural skills for sure, but I don't think he's on the team to play this season unless there is a desperate injury situation. Also with Stoudermire I'd let him get his special teams job sorted out before I burden him with any kind of role on offense. Better to use that import spot on D. It's not like you're wasting that import spot by starting 8 Canadians, allows flexibility at DL and LB, which is needed because our DL is extremely thin on talent right now, at least keep the guys fresh so we get their best 35-40 snaps.

Week 7 Edm@BC - Mont@Ott - Sask@Tor

The only chance Ottawa or Montreal have of getting out of the East is if Hamilton and Toronto both lose half their starters to injury. -
You've seen Johnson in game action 4 times. He was good vs BC last week, they had him playing rush end, 3 technique and off the line a little bit too. Good jump off the line, drove the OL into the pocket a few times but not a lot of effective moves. I hope Gibson is actually injured, disappointing if he's coming off otherwise. Absolutely schooled Olafioye and Draheim last week. Drew a bunch of holding penalties. DL will be thin in Hamilton, see how they hold up having to play more snaps, guys like Johnson and Collins.

It's time for the Riders to start sucking ...

Hard to run when everyone in the stadium knows the quarterback can't pass. Even Suitor questioned it... They totally should of ran the ball to set up the pass. Smith has the legs and the arm, he was making good throws. The guy has the potential and did better then he should of. Sunseri clearly stinks though We must have been watching different games. Smith couldn't toss a 15 yard pass on target without taking a crow hop, and no QB will get the time to do that often. He doesn't have the arm. He can run though. He looks like a rookie version of Alex Brink. The only way you're going to have a consistent run game with a QB like that is if you bring everyone in to block and fully commit to running. No defense is going to respect his arm enough to pull their MLB or WIL out of the box. -

If it's going to cost in the same ballpark just to have the subsidies for lower income families, I'd rather have a universal system. The problem of lack of available service is just as bad as the cost of it right now. Generally the more people make the more tax they pay, another thing the next government needs to address as it's been clawed at by the Cons a bit, so they will carry a heavier burden in terms of paying for services. The single mom making $30,000 is not going to pay much in the way of federal taxes that she won't see back in tax benefits, so really those people with kids making more money will be subsidizing her family. $100,000 combined is not all that much anymore either.

The subsidized child care program has been a complete bust in Quebec. First, all of the daycares unionized, and implemented rigid working hours, meaning that they weren't even open during periods when less financially advantaged people had to work, like shift labour, so only people with day jobs could take advantage, which tended to be the more wealthy. And then of course, the costs were far greater than even the most conservative estimates. Mulcair says that his plan will cost $5 billion per annum. Better double that, just as a start. $10 billion a year - that's a huge pill to swallow. There can only be one reason that Mulcair is pushing for subsidized daycare and that's because he's been told by the HEU and big labour to do it, because it will create thousands of new unionized jobs. It's not about the greater good for all, it's about the greater good for the unions, and that's why (one of the reasons) I can't stand the NDP. I guess it really depends on how the childcare system would work. Is there still a user fee or are we all just going to pay into it? Will there be spots for all children who require it? I don't know much about other provinces, but anyone at a licensed daycare in Manitoba is paying between $500-$700 per month for a pre-school aged child and $400-$500 for a school-aged child. Let's say that there are 5 million kids in Canada that need daycare and it's about $500 per kid/month right now, relatively conservative estimate given the cost of living on the West Coast and Southern Ontario. That's $30,000,000,000 (billion) that parents are paying out right now. Even if it cost $10 billion a year to have a national system you're putting a lot of money into the economy through the wallets of those parents and potentially allowing others who don't currently have their children in daycare to work outside the home if there are more affordable spots available. This kind of stuff is pretty low on my list in terms of wasteful spending done by governments.
-
The childcare issue should be provincial IMO, part of the education system, easiest way to handle it without creating an entirely separate bureaucracy. Most existing schools either have a child care facility and room to expand or room to hold a child care facility. All new K-8 schools in Manitoba must have space for a child care facility. It's a problem that needs to be dealt with though and really something that becomes an economic issue. Might suck to have to pay for it if you're not using it, similar to school taxes, but it's getting to a point where the service available is inadequate and ridiculously expensive, potentially keeping skilled workers out of the labour market for years. One of my best friends and his wife pay $1500 a month for childcare for 2 kids! I know there are some subsidies, but I couldn't imagine how a family with two incomes making say $50,000 a year total pre-tax absorbs that. Generally people with children of that age are nowhere near their peak earnings either. I guess once we're all working at Home Depot and Wal-Mart we'll figure it out.

I can't see a scenario where Taman survives to be the Rider GM by the start of next season. Just so many bad moves, granted some things he couldn't control like Heenan going to the NFL, but acquiring Shea Emry to be the ratio changer, giving away two very good NI DT's to Ottawa and then going back to having a NI DT the next season when you don't have the players to do it, giving Getzlaf a mega extension when he probably should have been the guy sacrificed to Ottawa, signing a bunch of 30+ guys off-season and in-season. Just a brutal job he's done in Regina on the things he does control.
