Around the CFL Offseason Discussion
JuranBoldenRules replied to Mike's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
It's understandable. I'm leery of someone who says they don't want extra attention just wants to play football, yet signs up for a reality tv show and agrees to hold a press conference announcing his signing in Montreal. I think if he really didn't want extra attention he might have asked what happens when every other American player who washed out of the NFL before even playing a meaningful game signs in the CFL and said let's do that. I respect that he's being open and there's a risk in that, but it's pretty clear that the media attention is something he's playing into at this point, not trying to avoid.Reality show aside, we had a press conference when we signed Westerman. High profile NFL players get attention. Westerman is a non import who actually played in the NFL, and a virtual lock to make the roster, one of our highest paid players. Apples to oranges. -

Who said anything about getting rid of fall football? Its the winter football that sucks. From a business perspective it makes a lot of sense. What's attendance like in Late October? There is infinitely more opportunity to sell out a couple of June ganes then give away free tickets in late October or early November. Winter starts December 21. June is usually a combo of oppressive heat and storms when the cold fronts finally appear. I don't think it's necessarily an easier sell than October for regular season. Meaningful games in October and November will sell in most CFL cities, and where they don't sell changing the schedule would make little difference. -

No. Marsh's injury doesn't change much, he's third string. If they weren't comfortable with Crompton and LeFevour the time to look for another QB was months ago. -
Who was the best coach for interviews?
JuranBoldenRules replied to BigBlue's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
O'Shea is actually one of the best at answering actual football questions, along with Lapolice. If you call in with a thoughtful question to his show or a reporter gives him one he'll get into it. He just does not get into politics whatsoever, and that's all he gets asked by the media here. -

I'm not a fan. I prefer fall football to June football. -
Bombers TC/Practice -- June 11th
JuranBoldenRules replied to Noeller's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
Run blocking was not bad last year, rarely is at this level. Marve is very good at the off-guard play, but that wastes a lot of steps behind the LOS and gives the defence a time to make a play behind the LOS. From watching Portis attempt a couple sneaks in Toronto, he has no idea how to do it either. It's rarely used in American football, but is a staple of Canadian football. Needs to be taught. -

Marve was bad at sneaks last year and our base short-yardage play shifted to the riskier off-guard play rather than a play that is safe and should be quite easy in a sneak. Another good point about our QB situation, we either need someone who can sneak or need to work more at teaching the guys we have to do it well. -

It's a sign that the 2 QB's who played the majority of the game are extremely lacking in ability to move the ball with their arm. There's some value in having an option style QB around, but I would really like to see an actual pro QB as one of our prospects, and IMO Brohm isn't a prospect at this point, he is what he is, a reasonable backup. -

It allways surprises me when teams dont gamble more in pre season. Try 2 pointers, an extra point doesnt really give you much in term of evaluation. Go for it on 3rd down some, Let the offence try as high pressure a situation as you can create in pre season, and if it fails see you how your D responds to a field position shift etc. Idk maybe im crazy. Makes sense to me to run special teams basically how you would in a meaningful game in pre-season. It's the hardest to practice at game speed and you want guys to get used to substituting. Also evaluating guys who will be playing special teams. -

Anyone worried about Bomber injuries, check out Montreal. Multiple players done for the season already, including a OL who was a potential starter but for sure going to be on the roster with Bomben dealt. -

I'm trying the NFL next year too. -
That would be a mistake cause Portis stinks. Six of one, half-dozen of the other. Both aren't good at sneaking either, their likely role this season, but lethal on the zone reads and option plays. I really would like to see a guy who looks like he has potential to be a CFL QB in town if we stick with 4 QB's. We don't need two guys like Marve and Portis around. Willy is the starter, Brohm is the backup but is pushing 30, the other two can't pass to save their lives. Some work to be done at QB IMO.

Gordon might be a PR candidate if they think they can develop him, but man he's gotta beat out a bunch of guys who are pro receivers today to get anywhere near the roster (Adams, Tuinei, Willie, Logan). -
Marve was skipping passes all over the place tonight. Doesn't matter how strong your arm is if you can't settle your feet down. Major happy feet, needs a ton of work to be a CFL QB. He's closer to Alex Brink in 2010 than Michael Bishop.

Marve had some good runs. Not looking good passing, all of his completions were quick hitters, hitch screens no downfield reads. Portis struggled passing as well. -

Turns out Shaw made up some password I've never heard of or used myself for my email account when I signed up with them. They gave me a hint, an old movie with Bill Murray. But I was able to fix the situation myself. -

220 is too small for a QB? -
Thomson isn't involved in Longboat. His real estate arm is Osmington which is the partner in True North. They own some land downtown too, owned the former Eaton's building and started dealing with Chipman in the building of MTS Centre, chose to become a partner of True North rather than sell outright. I don't believe that Thomson is in any more than Chipman is in terms of real dollars. Of course he's a billionaire so it's a relatively minor investment compared to Chipman's in terms of their overall wealth.

And where will the QB be when he finds them? In the _ _ _ _ _ _
-
That's ridiculous considering the way he played last year and so far in TC. If anything, Brohm should be the odd man out, or relegated to third or fourth stringer duty. He's completely immobile and lacks accuracy. There's nothing about him that's attractive except a strong arm. I obviously don't share the same confidence in how well Marve reads defences as you do, or how good he's looked in TC...in training camp. This is why he has to show progress in any chance he gets in pre-season games. Listen, I like the way Marve ad-libbed his way through his playing time last year, but I don't want my QBs to always be scrambling to make plays if he's missed his reads. Marve wants to leave next year, and if Portis and Yantz show well in their time, it wouldn't bother me to see Marve leave earlier. If hes always running for his life then ya its a problem. But hes not a pocket passer so maybe his reaction to what he sees is different and wants to move to make time or get himself in a better position. Quarterbacking doesn't really work like that. Everything is based on when he's throwing the ball and where he's going to be throwing the ball from. There are designed rollouts, "scrambles," and there's just flying by the seat of your pants which is mostly what Marve did last year. When it works it's exciting, like driving full speed towards the edge of the cliff and then slamming on your brakes before you go off the edge. When you go off the edge, it's not that exciting. Over the long haul it's not really a sustainable way to run an offence because it is extremely easy to defend, and that's why the vast majority of the scrambling QB's who can't really move the ball with their arm from the pocket fizzle out pretty quickly. I need to see Marve make some plays in the pocket before I get excited about him as a legit CFL prospect. Ya im not so sure about this. Name a QB who you would categorize as a scrambling QB who had sustained success in the last two decades, 00's and 10's. Kerry Joseph? Casey Printers? That's about it, and they had some pretty awful seasons losing their jobs.
-
Yes, and if they can make timing throws when they are forced to by teams spying and crashing their ends not allowing them to scramble. That's all I'm saying. I'm all for a quarterback who can make plays on the move, but they gotta be able to pass too. I'm not a fan of guys who rely on one thing, because it's easy for a defense to take that thing away, same goes for guys who can't keep a defense honest with their legs or move off their first read and just turn into statues in the pocket. Marve has yet to show us an ability to be a passer in the CFL. I love that he has loads of confidence, but he needs some steak with the sizzle. Mike Reilly is a good example of a guy who prefers to be on the move but can do damage from the pocket too.

Troy Stoudermire out 3-6 weeks with broken hand
JuranBoldenRules replied to gbill2004's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
Good call. I think if we signed him now his contract would be guaranteed for the season. So maybe the Bombers give him a look once the season starts, if Stoudermire's injury lingers and if none of the in house guys look good... What? Players on the roster to start the season get some type of guarantee. That's why teams often sign guys right after the season has started. I believe Romby Bryant was an example of this last year. Some guys have roster bonuses, but nobody's contract is guaranteed until after the 9th game. They get paid per game if on active, reserve or injured list, so teams might time signing guys in a way to avoid paying them a game cheque in-season. -
