Both coaches managing this game terribly in the dying minutes...Austin did the ol' Tim Burke punt for a single attempt vs a 42 yard field goal, punt got about 1 yard past the goal-line, but luckily for Austin the returner decided to go backwards. Jones doesn't go for 2 to give his kicker a chance to kick for the single to tie on the kickoff.

I like how the announcers are just flummoxed by the officiating and don't even know what to expect anymore.
-
Wow, Austin with a blunder, only to be saved by a bigger blunder by the Edmonton returner.

Keep Collaros in the pocket and he can't do a whole lot. Will be interesting to see if we can do that next week.

Tweaking Our Current Receivers
JuranBoldenRules replied to BigBlue's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
I disagree. There's huge value in keeping a defense off balance and guessing. A few passes per game to Fitzgerald, and a few runs up the middle for Pontbriand would help do that. I never said replace Watson with Fitzgerald in the slot. There are much better ways to break tendency that would keep the ball in the hands of playmakers. For the most part, defenses won't lose track of eligible receivers, especially downfield. So you're basically tossing a 2-3 yard pass (vertically, might be a much longer pass in real distance for the QB) out to Fitzgerald or Pontbriand in space and hoping they can maybe gain a few more yards. You're looking at maybe a couple opportunities per game for either guy who plays those tight end spots where the QB can check down to them when they are wide-open. You hit that once for a first down, and it's probably closed for the rest of the game because the LB/DB who is responsible for that flat was probably cheating downfield or looking into the backfield. There's no purpose in running plays for those guys regularly, they just don't have the speed or quickness to win 1 on 1 against coverage. If they are redesigning the offence, spend time figuring out how to get the ball to Denmark, Watson and Kohlert more effectively. -
Tweaking Our Current Receivers

Pontbriand taking handoffs makes little sense to me. He's clearly uncomfortable carrying the ball, giving him the ball where he's heading into traffic just isn't a good idea. Doing it a couple times a season to break tendency, fine. It's like lighting a match at a gas pump. Maybe the gas station won't explode this time, but it isn't a great idea regardless. And I'm not running clearing routes to throw a 3 yard pass to Carl Fitzgerald. If we're running combo routes to get people open, it's Denmark, Moore, Grigsby, Kohlert, guys who can do something when they have the ball. -
Well, if he has the same performance has last game, quite possibly. I really wish Sunseri was pulled in the last game to try out the other QBs when we knew the game was over. Now we have no clue if the others are any better than Tino. You'd just be putting Doege in a position to fail throwing him into a game when he had limited reps in practice. You wouldn't get any kind of read on how good or bad the guy actually is. If they plan on potentially using him because of Sunseri's lack of production, they need to get him more reps in practice this week, but it's a catch-22 cause Sunseri obviously needs the work too if he's going to play. Welcome to not having a starting QB.

It's WPG vs B.C. for 4th.Such is life we finish 5th and out of the playoffs BUT we would be in 1st place in the East and THEN we'll see where those separate division lovers are. Sunseri vs Calgary and Edmonton x5? I have a feeling BC isn't going to have a tough time catching and passing the Riders. BC shouldn't have too much trouble winning at least 3 of their remaining games, probably should win 4. Saskatchewan would have to win 2-3 games to match them. We have to win 3 more games than the Riders in the final 3rd to pass them in the standings. Not very likely IMO. Actually it's 4 more games if we beat Ottawa this weekend. Bombers have to finish with 3 more wins than the Riders get over the rest of this season, that's what I'm saying, not 3 total.

Winnipeg @ BC - final thoughts.

Agreed. The inability to find better import talent for the OL is vexing to say the least. League-wide IMO. There are a couple dominant guys, but even Olafioye looked like crap against us at RT on Friday. Could have been called for tons of holds, hands to the face etc, and he's supposed to be dominant. I thought he was Kirby Fabien at one point because he was having a lot of trouble. -
Playbook looks much more geared towards Collaros than what the TiCats started with in July.

Who said the run is not a problem?
JuranBoldenRules replied to Maudie fingerjammer's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
So, as long as they stayed in their gaps, and made their tackles, the run defence would work….sounds about right. So, what does that tell you? That it isn't working. I'll leave that for you to figure out. No, it's you that figured it out, maybe, Not once did i say it was working, nor did I say I agree with the concept. All I said …….was not to put words in O'Shea's mouth that he didn't say. I didn't say he said anything. I just alluded to the "everything is ok" attitude shown by some posters during the Joe Mack era. We don't need a repeat of that. What I'm seeing is buck-passing: "We'd be fine, if everybody just does their jobs". Sounds like typical corporate ass-covering to me. I'll take a lot of heat for not being on the MOS bandwagon, but I don't hate the guy. And I'm sure given time, he'll be a very good coach. But I must say, he's almost Kelly-esque in his denial of failure. Let the flames begin! And we have no idea what happens behind closed doors, which is where 99% of coaching is happening. Do you think MOS says, "no problems, good job boys" when they are reviewing film? Highly doubt it. Can almost guarantee guys are getting chewed out and coached up by MOS and their position coaches. Don't put too much stock into what the media gets or doesn't get. -
Collaros and Reilly, plus Glenn who has started all but 1 for BC.
-
Sucks more for SASK and WPG who do not have that capable veteran backup like BC (GLenn was their starter anyway this year) and Calgary have. Smart GM's. Well, would you rather have Glenn or Goossen in this season where we have about a .00001 % chance of winning the Grey Cup with either on our roster? BC is hosting the Grey Cup and their starter was guaranteed to miss half the season, it made sense for them, doesn't make sense for us given where our team is. Walters was smart to take the long view on this one.

Bulletin board material from Harris

What do you want O'Shea to do? Practice mind control? He doesn't control his players thoughts. Speaks more to the focus of individual players who focused on that rather than doing their job properly each play. -
Wasn't a fumble. He was called for intentional grounding on that play. Brohm looked ok to me. He's not as accurate as Willy, that is for sure, but you could say that about every CFL QB outside of Ricky Ray. The last couple drives before BC's final touchdown he looked pretty good. Zero help from his receivers. Then after the Lions final TD the floodgates opened on the OL. Good decisions generally though, you can see him working through his reads and he never put the ball in harms way. I think he'll be an average CFL QB, we'll see as he gets more reps. Going to be hard for any of our backups with basically no running game. You could see it when Brohm was in there. We were always in 2nd and long, BC would rush 3, maybe blitz a LB and drop 8 or 9 into coverage. Good luck working against that. Hard enough for an elite QB like Willy. I'd like to see us install some sort of option package for Portis. Remember seeing him run that kind of stuff at Florida and Maryland, he could be a good change of pace, give us a bit of a running game, wake up Grigsby a bit too maybe, get him the ball out in space with the D having to respect Portis' ability to keep the ball himself.

Doubt it's the collarbone, they would have immediately went for x-rays and his arm would have been immobilized in a sling against his chest. When they showed him at the end of the game his right arm was at his side and he was moving it.
-
Cornish will catch Grigsby in terms of rushing and yards of scrimmage by the end of next week. 7 games vs 12.
-
Cut from Tim Burke directly to Cornish scoring a 25 yard TD.

Winnipeg @ BC - final thoughts.

You really think the scheme changes now? Pretty sure professional football coaches have enough confidence in their ability to do their jobs that "hype" won't sway them away from doing their job properly. -
I guess, it was .1 of a second away from being late and there was no way in hell Emry would have been able to stop had any part of Mitchell hit turf before he got there. The guy is basically already on the turf. I'd rather see that kind of hit taken out of the game than 90% of the crap that's actually become a point of emphasis, like touching a QB's ankle when he's in the pocket.

Tim Burke, brilliant defensive coordinator.
