  1. It's not entirely about money. Turning the team over to 39 year old Burris means you are committed to mediocrity for a long time because you aren't putting your energy into developing a QB. So we win 5-6 games for a couple seasons with Burris, and back at square one. Go with a guy like Willy, and we'll at least have a chance to progress into 2015-2016. I think he's alluding to that as much or more than the money when he talks about mortgaging the future. And it wasn't a 3 year vs 2 year issue...Ottawa is paying Burris nearly half a million dollars.
  2. I guess...if you'd rather have 3 mediocre QB's than 1-2 good-great ones like several other teams have.
  3. What exactly were you expecting Henry Burris to win for us? And yes...Walters should be sure to sign Steve Myddleton, the mystical free agent NI OL, just give him a blank cheque. It is going to be a couple years of rebuilding in terms of NI's and QB's. That's the price we pay for relying on Buck Pierce for 4 seasons, wasting picks on Etienne's and Pencer's. If this rebuild isn't done right and we chase mediocre players like Burris to the detriment of developing better players, it will take even longer. But if the fans sit through two more years of medirocity there won't be any fans left to pay the bills... Pierce was a stop gap to help fill the void while we looked for / developed a future starting QB.. it didn't happen.. The qbs that we had failed to perform and have been cast off. If you are okay with 2 more years for 4-14 - 6-12 years you will be mightly lonely in the stands.. The major fallacy spewing from yourself and a few others is that Burris and a couple free agents in this year's market are going to change the fact that we are the worst team in our division...they won't. Need to rebuild this football team from the ground up, starting with management and coaching, now on the field. Rebuilding is a fallacy in a 9 team league where 6 make the playoffs...where all the teams are on the same level playing field fighting to recruit imports from the same talent pool down south...those perceived to be not good enough or lacking the physical makeup to be in the NFL. Reloading while building up your non-import talent base through the draft is completely feasible. There are several examples of this. We aren't on the same level as other teams recruiting anybody...see Eric Norwood. We need to rebuild. This isn't a regular 3-15 team, this is a rotten franchise.

  5. Give him the Rocky Butler Award, presented again by Marcel Desjardins.
  6. He's worth what Collaros got IMO. He has similar numbers (about 150 fewer throws), a better arm and throwing mechanics. Much rather overpay Willy than Burris or Glenn.
  7. Plus they'll have a whole new squad of cheerleaders that he's never met before.
  8. Drew Willy has a 99 QB rating on 147 career passes. Last off-season everyone was creaming their pants for a guy with a similar rating on 77 career passes.

If this rebuild isn't done right and we chase mediocre players like Burris to the detriment of developing better players, it will take even longer. If Burris is here, it gives us a couple years to develop a franchise QB... now we are in a position where we have to 'waste' a pick for Glenn or throw whichever new talent bring in to the wolves... we've seen how that works out. How do you develop QB's? Hamilton had Burris on their roster the last couple years, is Lefevour ready to start? It's not as simple as you make it out to be. QB's need to play to develop. If Burris would give us a chance to finish top 2 in our division, he would be worth it. He doesn't.
  10. In conjuction with signing a few free agents and some improvement in the coaching staff and the younger players to win a few more games, sure. You do what you have to do to create a winning culture in the organization that will ultimately lead to better things, like the Grey Cup. I would also think the cap rises this year with the new TV contract. $400,000 might be roughly the same percentage of the new cap as $350, 000 would be under the old cap. Which free agents? Everyone says just sign some free agents...who?
  11. 4-12 against the West the last 2 seasons. Half a million bucks for a likely 6 win 39 year old QB in Blue and Gold. That would have been an epic fail.

  13. Excellent news for anyone who wants the Bombers to build a successful organization, a rebuild which is much needed. Burris would be a reach for a quick fix, a guy who is 4-12 against our West division opponents the last two seasons. We are going to have the worst QB in our division, maybe 4th if Reilly stalls. That guy should be someone who has a future.
  14. This smells just like the "Khari is on a plane to Winnipeg" rumours we had a few weeks ago. That's a risk you take with putting people on planes in the winter with the bad weather. That plane lands in Vancouver and we lose a coach. If we used Greyhound to transport our hires at least they would stop in places less desirable than Winnipeg, and then they'd be so relieved when they get here that they'd sign for anything.
  15. I'm really worried that we'll lose out on Burris and his .250 winning percentage against the teams that we'll play the majority of our games against. Fold the franchise.
  16. I was at that Super Bowl party. He kept getting calls, and I heard him saying, "I appreciate the offer Mr. Elway, but I'm going to take a few days before I decide."
  17. I'm surprised they didn't declare all players free agents, or decide to have a fantasy draft.
  18. If they cut their turnovers by 1/3 they'll be scrapping with Toronto for first. Without Burris at QB that's a good possibility.
  19. The front loading didn't kill us, the deferred salaries did. I think Anthony Malbrough is still getting cheques from the Bombers.
  20. Bob Young was on the CJOB pregame show at one point last year tooting his own horn about the stadium in Hamilton and implied that he thought it was going to be better so don't tell me that the sentiment doesn't exist somewhere within the team. I'd take a stadium with more seats between the goal-lines and a functional concourse over one with thousands of seats with poor views, a concourse you can barely move through and beautiful steel arches that look great on postcards.
  21. This is all part part of the negotiation process. Patience.I'm well aware how negotiations work, but being a rebuilding team, a 39 year old QB come training camp needs us a hell of a lot more than we need it. The money can better be used elsewhere. On what exactly? QB is easily the most important position and biggest need for the Bombers.I'm not disputing that it is our biggest need. That being said the goal of a franchise is to year in and year out be a championship contender. At 39 years old, Burris does not give you that. This is about the bigger picture. You can do both, and that's what Walters is working towards. It's not short term OR long term.Walters is working to build a competitive team for next season (Burris etc) and long term (Willy). Again, I'm aware of that, but I think it would be a shame if bickering with Henry over X amount of dollars ends up costing us someone like Henoc. I'd be more than happy to go into the season with Willy as our QB. Sure he may not have the statistical season Burris may have in 2014, but you have your long term QB and you accelerate his development in the process.I'm confident signing Burris will have no impact on our ability to sign Henoc. And I just don't see your logic of going with Willy in 2014 when we can get Burris to fill in for a couple years to allow Willy to develop and to fix the OL.The Bombers need to win NOW. Now isn't the time to be developing another QB. Ticket sales would plummet and set the franchise back even further. Burris and Willy give the Bombers the best of both worlds. Under your logic you want to give up on Burris because he's taking a few days to make a decision and get a few more dollars out of the Bombers. I don't understand your logic, it's very short-sighted. On the contrary I would argue your logic is very short sighted. Why do the Bombers need to win now? They don't need to necessarily win now, and frankly to expect them to win now is a bit foolish. Walters has a massive mess to fix in front of him. What they do need to do in the immediate term is be respectable on the field, something that can be done without Henry Burris. As I said before, the goal of any franchise is to be a championship contender consistently. Signing Henry Burris does not do this. The only thing signing Henry Burris does is MAYBE if you're lucky get you to 7-11 or 8-8 this year. Starting Drew Willy accelerates his development and his him even more ready for 2015/2016 than he would be when Burris is gone when this team is finally ready to contend if the powers that be play their cards right. My logic has NOTHING to do with giving up on Burris because he's taking his time to decide. My logic has to do with the fact that between now and whenever he makes his decision the dollars on the table are bound to go up with all the teams he is negotiating with. That money can be better spent elsewhere on more LONG TERM investments that will go towards making the Bombers a championship calibre team year in and year out. I truthfully do not care if we lose out on Henry Burris. I do not see him as some big prize. What I do care about is having the money tied up in a band-aid solution for a couple of extra wins when that money could better be used towards players we are interested in retaining from our free agent crop, or signing free agents that would be long additions such as a Josh Bourke, Shea Emry, Craig Butler, or a Nick Moore just to name a few. All of those players would be MUCH smarter, long term additions than a soon to be 39 year old QB with a shaky track record at best looking for one final pay check that isn't going to bring us any closer to being a consistent Grey Cup contender. You don't get it. If Bombers don't start winning some games now, our new stadium is going to max out at 22-25k fans per game. How's that going to impact the long term sustainability of the team. If we don't start winning we will never attract free agents. And do you honestly think Bourke, Butler or Moore are coming to Winnipeg? They aren't. The Burris short term and Willy longer term strategy is a sound one. The short term success Burris will help us obtain will help us in the long term. It will make us a respectable organization once again, in the eyes of outsiders. The Bombers and this new regime need to build for sustainable success. Even with Burris, we're miles behind Saskatchewan, Calgary and BC. Burris went 2-6 against the West last season with a better team than we'll have, 1 win each over BC and Edmonton. There's almost no chance we get a home playoff game. While Burris is leading our team, we gain nothing in terms of developing a QB who could possibly be our franchise QB. QB's develop by playing in games and getting meaningful practice reps. They don't get that when they are 2-3-4 on a depth chart, especially behind a guy like Burris. Burris has made it pretty clear in his last two stops that he is not interested in mentoring young QB's, he's interested in being an undisputed starting QB. So we waste a year on Burris, win 6 games (assuming things go reasonably well) and we're right back where we started at this time in 2015. No answers at the QB position. This is the time to toss the legitimate prospects out there and find a QB. Our team is going to be bad anyways, and there are no expectations for this upcoming season, we should be building towards being a playoff team in the West in 2015, and a Grey Cup contender in 2016.
  22. But I've heard of him before!!! And he was in Montreal, every player they have is great! And he had more success then Hall, Goltz and Elliott and whoever else you want to start for our team... He won 3 POW's?!?! His first two starts were disasters, lost the gig to Marsh. Marsh got knocked out with the elbow injury, took over again, 2 awful starts, 2 good ones, 1 so-so Troy Smith takes over. I don't know how anyone who watched him play would rate him as good, or even a guy who has potential to be good. His arm is BRUTAL. The only QB's who started last season that had worse QB ratings were Goltz and Marsh.
  23. Are you guys thinking of Marsh? Neiswander is like Dinwiddie-lite. He lost the job twice to CFL rookies and has a terrible arm. Marsh was the gunslinger who couldn't do anything from the pocket.
  24. we've been over this before though, it's debatable whether or not the guy is in fact a quality starting OL AND it wasn't just a 2nd round pick, we gave the riders an allstar player to help them on their grey cup run as well. The allstar player should have been enough, this is Brendan Taman we're talking about here. But he started games before...so he's a starting OL...with a broken leg that didn't heal right the first time.
  25. Geroy went for an import receiver with man boobs, cut in training camp by the Lions, and a 3rd rounder. Banks is probably worth a 4th or 5th rounder. If we think Poblah is worth the same or less, it's a good trade for us. Clearly BC sees something in Poblah, otherwise they would have just taken a pick, which would cost them much less.
