  1. Good post, if you are willing to ignore all context. Why did everyone know and understand that Milanovich would be a good head coach? Why did everyone understand that the "hotshot" co-ordinators Burke and Marshall would be awful? With respect, that’s completely revisionist. Check the archives when the Bombers went with Mack instead of the Barker/Milanovich combo. Lots of people doubting Milanovich. Then go back and google some articles about Burke and Marshall before they flamed out as Head Coaches. Lots of love for their prospects. Check out Stubler too. And then check out hotshot coordinators who got NFL head coaching jobs. Lots succeed. Lots don't. And they all look like Dave Dickenson looks now until they get the big chair. The point I was trying to illustrate is not that Dickenson will fail as an HC. Just that if you take away his playing career his resume isn’t that much better than a bunch of guys that have failed as HC’s. I don’t think he’s the obvious choice or that he’s necessarily in position to turn up his nose at the Bomber job. p.s. GC100 Chris Jones beat the ever loving poo out of him. You are totally missing the point. Resume matters little when you're looking at a guy making a jump from co-ordinator or other assistant coaching position to head coach. You are actually making that point, yet completely missing it. The context you are missing is leadership and an ability to galvanize a group toward a goal, the ability to manage a team. Everyone in the league knew that Milanovich had it, everyone wanted to interview him and he wasn't selling himself out for just any shot at being a head coach. Everyone knew he'd be a head coach, and a good one. Everyone knew that Burke is a milquetoast personality who is better off in the background, everyone knew that Greg Marshall has no management skils, everyone knows that Doug Berry has trouble developing a productive relationship with his players, everyone knew that Lapolice could break down tape and make the right calls, but that he probably couldn't inspire a lot of confidence and manage a team. The stops on their resume don't fill in these gaps, and those are the differences between very good and great head coaches and crappy ones. The feeling now is that Dickenson fits the Hufnagel-Milanovich mould, Calgary believes in that feeling enough to pay Dickenson more than our head coach to call plays. That Grey Cup has little bearing on Dickenson or Jones going forward as potential head coaches. The Stamps got there with Kevin Glenn, not a surprise that he choked, the better QB won that game.

  3. Bullshit. Don't tell me we can't afford him. We've got just as much money as anyone, even if a lot of it's "hush hush" under-the-table stuff. If we've gotta overpay to get the right guy, then they'll do it. I'm certain Miller knows the story, and the mucky-mucks have learned their lesson. They'll target the right guy and make sure he's taken care of. The only way the Football Club can afford a marquee staff is if they are not even going to put up the illusion that they are attempting to meet the obligations on the two loans or if they pull a few hundred thousand out of player salaries and spend at the floor. They don't have as much money as anyone. When there are teams with private owners underwriting $5-$10 million a year in losses and the Bombers have to turn a $4.5 million a year profit to meet the obligations of the stadium loan (after paying back the $10 million loan), they aren't on equal footing.
  4. Dickenson won't be leaving Calgary. He's head coach in waiting there, we might be able to match what he's making now, but if we pay him Milanovich or Hufnagel money we won't be able to put a staff together. Not to mention the mess he'd be wading into her vs the stability in Calgary. It doesn't hurt to try to get an interview with him, but like Milanovich in 2010 it is a high probability that Dickenson has no interest.
  5. Really? Coaching doesn't matter? Reilly had two years in BC. Collaros has Milanovich, Maas, Brady and Ray who all played in the CFL at QB. You think that doesn't make a difference in terms of developing a QB? 2 of our offensive coaches are in their first CFL job as a coach or player, the other 2 are Howell and Bellefeuille, essentially a rookie and a coach with a so-so record as both an OC and head coach, and no track record of developing quarterbacks, other than failed ones. Mostly leaned on scrapped vets like Marcus Crandell and Kevin Glenn.
  6. I dunno.I guess we'll see as time goes on, won't we? I make it to a couple of games a year because I live in Calgary. So, what happens in Winnipeg really has no affect on me. I just know here in Calgary that the C Trains run right to McMahon Stadium & carry thousands of fans on Game Day. There's also places to park around the stadium so fans have a choice to take the train or car. As far as Corus Apps go, I have a Blackberry with another 3 months to go on my agreement. With a new phone I can start downloading apps like that. There is more than enough parking available within a 1.5 km-2 km walk. If you want to be a 5 minute walk away or get dropped off at the stadium, your options are parking on campus or using transit. There's no solution to the problem (if you don't want to or can't walk or use transit) given the location. You add more parking on campus and the traffic problem just becomes worse, then you get to a point where people realize the problem is getting on and off the campus and won't use the parking, which is basically where they are at with the current spots available for Bomber games.
  7. The two situations are not really comparable. Edmonton did not have anyone who showed anything remotely close to what Collaros has, plus Ray has missed significant portions of the last two seasons. Generally when QB's start missing half seasons due to shoulder injuries their careers are in peril. There is a tough decision for the Argos to make.
  8. So, is it the U of M who won't build a parking lot on the old golf course land??? That would go a long way to alleviate problems. I don't think that's a solution. The problem is getting people on and off the campus, adding more cars wouldn't help without adding another route on and off campus. Most people don't want to park on campus unless they have mobility issues. They aren't selling the parking they have available now.
  9. Is there any evidence that Jyles isn't 350 lbs lying on a couch strung out on funions? Guy hasn't played in 2 seasons, it's not a fantasy draft.
  10. That makes absolutely no sense.
  11. Hard to coach around horrible throwing mechanics at halftime. I'm sure Hall has been told to settle his feet his entire life, but he's still dancing and sailing passes. Maybe they could coach him to aim for a target 5 yards in front of the route he's trying to hit, then the ball would be on the money.
  12. Can we fold our team and start again next season as an expansion team?
  13. Ticket prices can only go up if there is demand. Same goes for parking and concessions. Already this season every parking lot I walk by off-campus on my way to the stadium has lowered their price. Some started at $20, some at $15, most are at $10 now, one at $8. Concessions in my area were noticeably barren. Guessing we won't be paying $9 for a 8 inch pizza much longer, or a bunch of vendors may not return.
  14. Are you kidding me? Walters has brought in Peach, Kelly, Foster, Boltus, Brown, Bo Smith since Mack got canned. Peach and Kelly are decent players... the rest are filler. Walters has another two weeks until trade deadline? Then a tiny window to sign/trade for Collaros...? If Miller has a real candidate in mind, maybe we need to get him in here in early October. The point you are missing is that teams are built in the off-season. Everyone Walters brought in are filler. If they weren't. they would have been on a roster.
  15. They can pass. They might on the import section and 2nd NI round.
  16. Pulling Hall was about the only good decision. Guy had major happy feet, even more than usual, everything was sailing, he'd have thrown 6 picks in a half if BC didn't drop a bunch. 2 TD passes do not balance that out. Just doesn't have the physical ability to play the game at this level, terrible arm.
  17. "Tyler Pencer Should be Ready, but Isn't: Bombers' Burke" Guess they had a free agent editor exodus.
  18. Well they have to have it done at least before the season starts. They haven't in the past. The PA doesn't have a whole ton of leverage because there is no shortage of football players and they are hardly a unified group. They will play under the terms of the current deal until they get a new one.
  19. Something like starting an American at guard who has never played guard over our high draft pick NI OL prospect in a meaningless game? We can't fire Burke because we don't have enough coaches on staff, but that doesn't make it the right decision.
  20. CFLdb (which is a damn good website) indcates the SMS year is based on player's contracts which run from Feb 16 of one year to Feb 15 of the next. Players get paid by the game (with roster and performance bonuses paid in lump sums on specified dates). When contracts begin and end isn't relevant to the SMS.
  21. No it doesn't. The SMS does not run on a calendar year. A new year starts in either mid-February (at the start of the FA period) or the beginning of March (I can't remember which date off the top of my head). The SMS runs on the calendar year. The only way they can apply cap money from this season forward is if they convince guys they want to sign to extensions to take money up front. High probability that Burke does not quite understand this as he spouts off.
  22. If it is 3 years after they complete their first year of eligibility, that means after their 4th year of CIS eligibility. The only change is that it was previously 4 years (of time, not eligibility) after first enrolling at CIS or NCAA school. Previously, a guy who redshirted in CIS could be drafted after his 3rd year of eligibility, that's the situation Coombs is in. They should just have guys declare for the draft when they are ready, whether they are 19 or 24, regardless of eligibility. Imagine if you're a CIS guy who has CFL talent in your 2nd year, but you are leaving school. When can you be drafted now? If you go to play in the CJFL, are you no longer draft eligible as you would have been before as someone who enrolled in a CIS or NCAA school (like Pencer).
  23. Seriously? Give me a break. Such a double standard lol The only media person in Winnipeg who I find can keep an objective mind is Ed Tait, or at least present an objective view. The rest are severely clouded by who they do and don't like personally, who gives them what in terms of information and scoops. Irving was pathetic on the post-game show making excuses for Burke and rationalizing his gaffes. Penton and Friesen openly campaign against anyone they don't like who works for the Bombers. It became pretty clear early on that criticism of Mack had a personal tinge to it from many media in the city. That's not to say that he did a good job, but the media portrayals of people involved with this team are an absolute joke.
  24. We don't need 3 IMP OL. I hope Pencer isn't sitting down. These meaningless games are the perfect time to develop him.
  25. Is it a bad thing that I have more faith in this guy's management style than Tim Burke's?
