Prediction: Who Will Be Our Leading Receiver?
17to85 replied to Atomic's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
well not all that many. I can't think of any real automatic catches that Matthews dropped. Some contested ones sure, but not every one of those will be caught either. There were just as many throws to Matthews that were no where near him. As for Denmark, one bad game really. He was getting open against Montreal. To me this is just a knee jerk reaction which ignores the biggest problem with the offense. Yeah I like Pierce going in too, he's got great hands and a big frame, but unless Buck Pierce is going to pick up his game in a big way it's not going to matter. -

If a qb constantly does nothing against a blitz he becomes too easy to defend against. Case in point: compare Burris and Pierce last game. Pressure game rather than turtling like PIerce was doing Burris would move around, make a guy miss and buy yourself some time and complete a pass. That's one way you slow down a team blitzing, the other way is get the ball out of your hands quick, but we've seen that pierce can't do that effectively so why isn't he able to use his legs to avoid pressure?

Prediction: Who Will Be Our Leading Receiver?

but will it matter if we still keep throwing a disproportionate amount of passes to the SBs? The WRs are not a big enough part of the offense to worry about who is in there. Gotta fix the qb position before the receivers matter. -
it may not be the only problem but it's the biggest one by far. Or do you think Pierce has been playing well? You can change receivers all you want but if the ball is constantly being thrown over their heads or the qb is taking a sack because he wilts when pressure comes it won't matter. There may have been blocking mistakes from the o-line, but with that many blitzes there's going to be pressure coming through, it's up to the qb to make a play against that to slow them down, pierce has failed to do it. Letting him run more will be a help, but it remains to be seen if he can still perform at the level he needs to be able to.

except that hamilton for one has been losing because of their defense not their qb so your point doesn't make sense. Toronto as well has lost more becuase of their defense than their qb playing well. Montreal might want to think about it if Calvillo doesn't improve but there are other factors that are the primary issue there.... You can't just make up a bullshit argument like that when the reason the bombers are 1-2 rather than 3-0 is the horrendous play of the quarterback.

and what would the result be? a loss? cause losses are happening now as well.

well consider this though... only one receiver on the bombers has double digits in catches, that's Watson. Etienne and Matthews have 6 a piece. Denmark and Kohlert have 4, Edwards has 6 and anderson has 3. here's some other numbers... that's 43 for slotbacks, 10 for wide receivers and for comparison, 9 for runningbacks. Seems to me that Denmark not having a lot of catches is as much a case of the offense very heavily favouring the SBs over all other options. -
you're fooling yourself if you think they could look worse. When your QB is playing that poorly you lose nothing by putting in someone else. Any other player would have been benched already if they played that badly regardless of whether anyone thought the backup could do better or not. Burke himself said it. Guys keep making the same mistakes and fail to execute you gotta sit them down at some point. Except apparently when it's Pierce.

bet against edmonton

you're saying SImpson isn't fast enough when his long TD he basically outran a bunch of guys to get to the endzone? and his other TD was one that he beat the D to the outside with speed... He's fast enough. I will say it again, you will get stuffed on the runs in the CFL, in order to establish anything on offense a team MUST be able to pass their way out of trouble on 2nd and long, our team can not do it and teams know that if you take away the run and pressure Pierce the bombers are going to be punting in 2 plays.
-
This is more than 3 games though, PIerce sucked last season as well regardless of the injuries, but for some reason you people are all ignoring it. The guy is simply not a good quarterback at this stage anymore and that's based on the way his career has gone since he arrived here.
-
Burke addressed it in his comments, they ran on first down a lot and got stuffed then went 2 and out. Bottom line in the CFL your running game will sometimes be stopped on first down, that's why no team that is run focussed ever wins anything in this league. You need to be able to pass your way out of trouble in the CFL to really get the running game working and vice versa. Right now the bombers passing attack is so impotent you won't see the run game being a big factor. Gotta be able to convert on some 2nd and longs in the CFL.

Just curious, but is all this labbe hate because on one play he over ran the angle on Burris? Cause you know what, Labbe was hardly only on the night having burris change direction enough to make the tackler miss him. Every linemen and most of the linebackers probably had it happen to them at least once. I think some people are just too comfortable with Labbe as a scapegoat.
-
So when the offense lines up and PIerce takes a look at the defense across from him should be not be making that adjustment? We see him making calls on the line all the time to change things, if there's no plays to counter a blitz then shouldn't we put some of, or most of the blame on the qb for A) not reading the defense and not making the play to counter it?
-
CFL rosters are small, you get multiple injuries to one position in a game you're going to have people playing there who aren't suited to be starters, just the way of it. Every team everywhere can deal better with injuries between games than in games.
-
Hopefully we see Pierce come into the game at receiver. That guy always seems to catch the ball when it comes to him which is a much needed skill right now
-
Why not put Goltz in to do his run it around the edge play when we're stuck in the midst of 5 or 6 2 and outs in a row? At least get a first down and let the punter punt from somewhere other than the shadow of his own goalposts.
-
The problem with Bucks stats for his career is that he's not in his mid 20s anymore. His game started to fall apart last season and it hasn't rebounded this year. We used to worry about Pierce getting hurt because he was good when healthy, now he's not even average when healthy and we're still terrified of him getting hurt.
-
the biggest problem for pierce with his WRs is that he is not accurate with them down the sidelines at all or if it's just an out he tosses up a lot of freebies for the dbs to break on, he nearly had one picked last game throwing to the sidelines. He is much better at going deep to the SBs, Edwards in particular. Honestly I just think Pierce and Matthews just don't have any chemistry at all. Matthews did a lot of his best stuff with Brink or Elliott in the game last season. With Pierce it was usually Edwards who was seeing more balls.
-
I see the same things as you though I'd maybe change the shows up for one quarter thing to shows up for about 2 great drives a game. Cause there's times in every game where Piece has looked damn good hitting receivers and marching the ball down the field.... the trouble is that he can't sustain that for more than 2 or 3 drives a game.
-
Yeah that'll be where I saw him playing more of a LB type spot. Would really love to know more from the tv guys, they never even mentioned Parker being out at all which is par for the course for them. Can't stray from the script of jerking off one player or group on one team to do trivial things like update who's out of the game and who isn't.
-
oh come on, duane forde drew up what happened on that play quite clearly. Johnson was playing outside position expecting inside help, the inside man bit down deep and johnson was caught outside and the ball thrown inside. Don't blame Johnson on that when when it was the inside guy who blew his assignment.
-
Am I crazy or was Davis playing a bit like a linebacker at times in the hamilton game anyway? Is it possible he goes in the middle and Muamba to Parkers spot? Or do they just see if Wild can run with the job? Either way it really sucks to lose a guy who was playing so well.

Seems like the only people avoiding the PIerce issue are the ones who can actually do something about it.
