Week 13 - Edm 25 Ham 18 & Ott 30 Sask. 27

Wally should be shown the door. -
You have 3 left of centre parties, the Libs, the NDP & the Green Party & one centre right. Of course the vote is split. I have no idea if Trudeau has brought the Libs to centre-left as he should to get some of the Conservative vote... I still think people are afraid to vote NDP & come election day the voters who are courting the NDP will instead park their votes behind the Libs & Conservatives. I just hope the wacko Elizabeth May & the Greens get eliminated. What an annoying ***** of a politician she is.

Guilty people don't confess but innocent people do? Can you please explain that, Mark H as it is a confusing statement? I don't think we are "civilized". Civilized countries don't have crime like sexual assaults, murdering 2 year old kids etc. A civilized society doesn't have beheadings, terrorism, torture, prisoner of war camps, or wars. We, as the human race try to convince ourselves that we are civilized when I believe we're not.

I liked Tom Burgess but I think Collaros is a better qb than Burgess who was a streaky qb. Burgess was capable of tremendous highs & lows but overall an average qb. He was Kent Austin's backup for years in Saskatchewan. Burgess was a great game day manager. He didn't have the capability of putting the Bombers on his shoulders like Clements or Brock but he was smart & used the talent around him really well. The Bombers had a very good offensive line, a great defense & special teams in 1990. Burgess was just another cog in the machine that year albeit an important one. -

Looks like a lot of BC players have given up. Wally just pulled the innards from the Lions in the off season. Tedford is going to be the fall guy when it really should be Buono. I don't think a management change will happen until... if... the Lions are sold as Braley is close to him. Maybe a new owner would want someone else to manage the team. I think the last 3 or 4 years the Lions haven't been very good. Again, that's on Wally. -

Why can coaches only challenge defensive PI & not offensive? That non call on Fuller was brutal. -

And you lecture too much. It is a lecture to tell grown adults to stop feeling personally offended by someone doing something which should have no tangible impact on their life? Hilarious that you make such a comment when lecturing Muamba on how to live his life. Here is some reality: 1. You are an adult, sports is entertainment, stop allowing it to impact your life. You aren't on the team. 2. Some here take their opinions, and professional sports far too seriously. 3. Henoc Muamba can take a day, a month, a year, or 10 years to do whatever he wants, his life, he can do it the way he wants, and he isn't wrong. He didn't ask for, nor does he care, nor should he care, what anybody thinks about how he is going about it. If this ain't lecturin'... And dude, before you get your panties all in a knot, we all do it. We all lecture here at times. -
I missed the debate last night as the Broncos game was far more interesting. I did turn over to CPAC at half time, and caught part of Mulcair's interview (I can only watch about 30 seconds of that clown before my gag reflex starts kicking in) after the debate. He was asked why the NDP used $67 a barrel for oil in his platform rather than $45. You could tell he had no clue, and didn't know what to say, so he did the usual Mulcair thing and just channeled Pat Martin, getting annoyed and angry that anyone would dare question anything the NDP would say, instead of giving an actual answer. But what else is new. All three leaders in my opinion are pretty weak, but they are trying to govern a pretty schizo country in my opinion. If you pander to the West you piss off Quebec and Ontario. If you pander to Quebec you piss off Ontario and the west. There is no answer that will please everyone. But it was a good question in my view - why is the NDP using $67 a barrel? I think I know why. Because their total bullshit platform that is "costed and accounted for" is total bullshit. If they used actual oil prices they wouldn't even come close to a balanced budget. So they have to lie to try and make it look like they will. I think promising balanced budgets was a huge mistake. Same thing here in Alberta. The Tories always under/over estimated a barrel of oil. It worked for Klein for a decade as he always underestimated the price of a barrel of West Texas Intermediate & he had massive surpluses. Didn't work for Stelmach, Redford or Prentice who all over estimated to pay for their election goodies then rung up massive deficits. Klein was the luckiest politician in Canada. Not the best but the luckiest to have governed in a time of wealth & prosperity everywhere unlike the other 3 poor sap AB Premiers. Even the good politicians are clueless.

I agree these things are heinous but the sytem isn't perfect and one innocent person executed is too much. I do think prisoners should have to pay their society back to debt with labour though Those convictions I refer to were iron clad. Especially Olsen. He boasted & laughed how he killed those kids knowing where they were all buried yet refused to say where for all of them. He wanted to write a book. I believe at one point there was talk of a movie & he complained to the media saying he should be able to profit off of both. He knew he'd never get out so he put the families through hell whenever he could. He also knew he'd never be executed so he had no fear of dying. The man was sadistic, heinous, conniving, cunning & manipulative. ok but the standard is proof beyond a reasonable doubt and people still end up wrongfully convicted. By that definition everyone in jail should have an ironclad case against them if they are going to prision. Where do you draw the line as to what is iron clad and what isn't? What is the mechanism? When the guy is telling police where he buried the victims. That's iron clad.

If the debate is experience its not so much age thats the issue. I think that's readily apparent. Wasnt Harper 46 when he became PM, probably 44-ish or so when he became leader (if not younger) so he equates to Justin on age. Its the experience. Harper had far more experience. And Mulcair does too What experience? how does sitting in the H of C give you experience? Ask Rob Anders. None of these 2 guys are ready. Harper wasn't ready when he took office. There's no job experience to help you learn to be a leader of a country.
-
I think it might have to do with his last name more than making him sound like a kid. It also might be a psychological thing. For example, I saw a point made online about why Harper isnt addressed as "Prime Minister"...well probably because if you address him that way, it enters the minds of voters to equate "Prime Minister" with Harper (even though its accurate). So in a way its a disrespectful way to address JT without being really disrespectful. If you're voting for PM, you probably want a "statesman" not your buddy Justin from down the street. Obama didn't know where half the countries of the world were located on an atlas. I doubt if George W Bush did or Ronald Reagan did either before they took office. Reagan was a Hollywood actor before entering politics. What real job experience did Harper have before he became a politician? Worked awhile for the Canadian Taxpayers Federation? A policy wonk in university? In on the ground floor with the Reform Party? A sitting MP? To me, that sounds like Harper wasn't ready either when he became PM. Every leader of a country has to learn... The job itself teaches them.

Wow, are they out to lunch. And we talk about defensive & offensive coordinators not being able to adjust in just a football game. This is a federal election & the Conservatives are dropping the ball. Im no political expert. But it might not be based on public polls but on the seat race. They might see the Liberals as bigger threats in key ridings whereas the seats the NDP will win, they will win. Even in polling where the NDP was ahead, some polls shows seat predictions with the Cons well in front of the NDP. And it might also be that they see Justin's best attribute his charisma whereas they think voters will turn away from Mulcair for his plan. Or...maybe they feel there is a lot of undecided around that center position and feel the Liberals are more likely to get them than the NDP so they go after Justin as a way to sway undecided back to them (Cons). Yeah, who knows? I just think calling an election during the August long weekend as well as during the middle of the Mike Duffy Trial was beyond stupid. Especially now that the trial has been adjourned to the New Year. It was either smugness, stupidity & over confidence. Probably all of that & more.

Harper is going to lose this election... I just can't see him winning. Lots of flubs & errors.

No, just saying that education is fine but not the total answer having experienced addiction first hand. Probably never should have brought my personal experiences into it but I felt it was the thing to do.
-
Can anyone tell me why the Conservatives keep hammering home that Justin is not ready yet there have been very few attack ads against Mulcair & the NDP? I just don't get it. Any theories?

I didn't say that. Why do you twist things around? I said alcoholics don't want to help themselves until they want to be helped. You think sitting in a counselling session when they don't want to be there is going to magically change things? It won't. People have to want to help themselves first. They have to hit rock bottom before they can come back. Some do & a lot don't, unfortunately. An alcoholic or drug addicted mother is going to drink or use if they want regardless of the harm to the fetus. No amount of education is going to help unless they want help. My father knew there was no food in our house yet did that stop him from blowing 50% of his paycheque on booze? No, never. he knew but it didn't matter. For people who want help there are already some great programs out there to wean them off alcohol & drugs. More funding & more programs are needed so I don't disagree totally with your point. I just don't see more education as a way to clear out the jails as you suggest.

While I agree you will never wipe it out completely, there is means to educate and help people. The justice system isnt equipped to deal with it either. The usual means of dealing with "thinking errors" dont work with many FASD sufferers. Ever try to reason with a teen who drinks? Pregnant or not? Or a hardcore alcoholic trying to tell her not to drink in order to protect her unborn child? Unfortunately, my family has had to deal with alcoholism over a couple of generations. I have first hand experience trying to help a loved one. Nothing you say works. Nothing you do works. The only way they can be helped is if they finally want to be helped themselves. The bottle is the most important thing. Family is second, third or 364th on their list. then you think they'd be worrying about an unborn child? I am extremely thankful it was was my father who was the alcoholic & not my mother as I was born a healthy baby. She never, ever drank or smoked when she was pregnant, before or after I was born as I had an older brother or sister & it was the same for them. Not to get personal here anymore than I have to but my father (who I loved) put my Mother thru hell for 45 years of marriage. Yet she never wavered. She stuck by him when other women would have walked out. he never was a violent drunk. never abused us as kids or my Mother.never raised a hand to her or us so for that I'm also extremely grateful. But he would disappear for days on end. At times we thought he must've died only to surface many days later, come home & then do it all over again. Money was scarce in our house as he was the only wage earner & we'd have no food or even bread & milk. My Mother had to get a job as a maid to feed us & pay our bills. The sixties were not good times in our home. Only after she passed away in 1985 & due to declining health himself in his later years where my Father could no longer drink which cleared his head, did he suffer personal pain & sorrow for what he did. He had a ton of regrets & wished he could go back & change what happened. He asked for our forgiveness which we gave him. He never realized how good he had it until she was gone. Just sad. Anyway, I could have been one of those FASD kids had my mother drank as well & with the home life I had growing up who knows where I may have ended up.

It's time for the Riders to start sucking ...
iso_55 replied to IC Khari's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
Dyce & O'Day aren't doing what is best for the team but what's best for their careers. All interim holders in any profession do that. Dyce & O'Day are on probation & it's all about winning to keep their jobs. I think trying to sell Bob Dyce as the permanent HC to an already pissed off fanbase whether the team wins most of their remaining games or not is going to be a completely hard sell. He may be a nice guy & the players love & respect him but most fans barely know who he is. Dyce always seemed to be the quiet, good & loyal soldier who never was talked about much or distinguished himself as an assistant coach rightly or wrongly during his time with the Bombers & the Riders. I think Rider fans want someone better known or more successful as a coordinator like an Orlando Steinhauer, who's defense is kicking ass in Hamilton as an example. Bringing Dyce back as permanent head coach, I just can't see it happening. -
That'll never happen as you can't legislate intelligence & the way people conduct their lives. I'd argue that children with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome are abused & maybe we should look at putting the parents behind bars if a child is diagnosed with it. However, all that does is make our already overcrowded penal system more crowded so what can be done? Banning alcohol was already tried in Canada & the US in the 20's & 30's. We all know what happened with that. So, I don't believe that money poured into education & funding will wipe it out. People already know it's dangerous to drive under the influence of alcohol yet millions still do everyday around the world. So, hoping FASD can be wiped out through education is a fallacy that I don't think will ever happen.
