Stamps have done a ring of honour now for 20 years & it is a great idea. I'd be all for that!
-
Bomber_fanaddict, that is why it is great to have a conversation about the team & who should be honoured. The team goes back 79 years. There were some great players who have been absolutely forgotten which is sad. That is the fault of both the Blue Bombers & the CFL for not doing enough to honour the legacy of player who came before. For years, the Bombers didn't want to do any kind of remembrance for anyone because either they didn't care, were ashamed of the present or it was a link to a better time when they actually won something.

We should make a list!! Who we think deserves a statue. Be interesting to see the names we come up with. Ken Ploen should have a statue but he has an entrance named after him as does Stegal & Poplawski. I think we have to honour some of the guys who came before Grant & Ploen that are forgotten but played a huge part in the history of the Blue Bombers. The first player that deserves a statue is Fritz Hansen. He played a huge part in the Bombers winning the 1935 Grey Cup & I believe was the first American the Bombers ever signed. Another is quarterback Jack Jacobs. He never won a Grey Cup although he played in 2. But he was such a prolific passer & exciting player in an era where 2,000 yards passing was considered an amazing season. Canad Inns Stadium was nicknamed "The House That Jack Built" because he used to pack them in at Osborne Stadium so much so that it became apparent that a new facility was needed back in 1951-2. So, I'd start with those 2. I think Cal Murphy deserves a statue for his work as Blue Bomber Head Coach & later General Manager. And for his heroic fight back from his death bed when he suffered a heart attack & then had a heart transplant. All the while doing all he could directing things as best he could from his hospital bed in London, Ontario during the 1993 Grey Cup. The Bombers won 3 Grey Cups in his time with the Bombers.

Great players & coaches deserve to be remembered, especially Bud Grant. That was the Bombers Golden Age. Four Grey Cup wins in 6 seasons.

BDI is seasonal & sooo worth it in the end. As is the walk over the Elm Park Bridge on a warm summer evening!! I'll wait as I would only go 3 or 4 times a summer when I lived in Winnipeg & make a point of it when I'm in the City.

Moore is not much younger than Old Bob. Bob is 65 or 66 (Scott Taylor had a column on him) but I think he'll run out the string for the next 4 or 5 years before TSN wipes out CJOB's sports coverage. Buchko used to be GM of CJOB so he arranged a behind the back sweetheart deal as part of his ascension to Bomber CEO. Geoff Currier is not the answer either - he's late 50s or early 60s. And if you've ever listened to Jimbozo Toth do U of M games on Shaw or other media, that guy is right in there with the worst of Rod Black or John Wells, perhaps worse! Jim Toth is fine working the game in the booth/studio pre & post game. Not doing pbp. I actually enjoy Toth's Upper Deck Sports Show.
-
The flipside is these guest analysts usually have much better insight on the opposition and the goings on there than any of the OB regulars do. And we get to hear about Jesse's bobsled training. Well, the thing is, I don't care about the other team. I care about the Bombers so not having an analyst is just so ridiculous. Like I said, CJOB is one cheap operation.
-
Pretty sure he's done some amateur sports play by play on Shaw. After Bob Irving, would you be happy listening to a guy who has virtually no experience? I wouldn't.
-
Has Toth ever done pbp? It's not easy to just take over from Bob & not skip a beat.
-
Sure took the Bombers long enough to really recognize Bud.

NHL Old Boys Club working here. -
My beef with CJOB for years is that they have been too cheap to hire a full time on the road analyst with Bob Irving. Yeah, they use different guys & some like Neil Lumsden are good but they don't know the team or background of the players like an analyst would who was always around the Bombers talking to players & coaches. My take on CJOB management is they truly are cheap. They truly don't care about the Bomber fanbase & that the pre & post game show are stale. Maybe it would be a good thing if they lost the rights to the Bomber broadcasts because it may be time. If that happened, I could see Bob Irving packing it in & retiring. Not having a full time analyst because management doesn't want to pay anyone or their travel & meal expenses with all their advertising revenues coming for the broadcasts. I think that's total disrespect for Bomber fans.

Didn't know you lived out here... I miss the BDI now that it's summer & Chicken Delight.

Well..... no.

We need an offense where the qb is not the center piece or "The Guy". Someone who is a great game manager & doesn't make mistakes or turn the ball over. You can win with a qb like that. Sean Salisbury won a Grey Cup in 1988 being a very good game manager & used the talent around him to win. So did Tom Burgess in 1990. Until a qb emerges or comes along to take the bull by the horns, for gosh sake, I just hope Bellefeuille doesn't expect his starter (Willy) to do the things they can't do. Like forcing the ball aggressively downfield vertically, for example, if he is unable to do so. Limit the mistakes & try to play as much error free football offensively as they can. Hell, if we develop a great defense, put it on them to win games. We did that in 1988 & 90.

Madani: CFLPA Recommends Strike Vote To Members

We here in Alberta like to think we don't live in some socialist utopia like you guys in Manitoba. We used to be free enterprise, pro business & anti unions. But Red Tories & closest NDPers like Ed Stelmach & Alison Redford changed all that. Now, we're just like everybody else. The Alberta Advantage is dead. -

When the players are ready to cave the CFL will throw in one last bone - that way the players can take a positive talking point to the press rather than just admit they lost. I'm not getting the whole neurologist thing. If we had catscan machines on the sidelines that would be one thing, but there is nothing a neurologist is going to do that a non-crappy doctor can't also do. Emergency sideline brain surgery? Symptoms present? Don't go back in the game. I know the NFL has it but that isn't anything more than a multi-billion dollar industry protecting it's butt from lawsuits. Might have helped Tim Burke last year. The SPCA should have been called to the sidelines last year to help poor Tim as he was nothing but a whipped puppy all season long. -
Noeller, now that Peter Maher is retired after 34 years doing Flames radio there's a big void for pbp here in Calgary. There's no one in Calgary remotely good enough to replace him. No one was ever groomed.

Look nice!

Did anyone get lost 2-3 sentences into this? It was like trying to read a tolkien novel for the first time.. Well a lot of effort had to go into the nicknames. I mean, turning "Jim" to "Jimbozo"? Brilliant! Maggot Kelly was a bit underwhelming though. Kelly Savalas never caught on! btw - Maggot was Kelly Savalas' character on the great mid 60s movie THE DIRTY DOZEN. You wouldn't want to know what Maggot was all about but I'm sure you can look it up!!! You mean TELLY Savalas? Even Nate has to laugh at this... Too funny!

I've been away from Winnipeg for 24 years but I know Wasalyca-Lys or however you spell her name is running for Mayor again. She was in cabinet with Gary Doer when I lived in Winnipeg. Then she ran & sat as a federal NDP member in Ottawa. I absolutely HATE career politicians, especially socialist ones like her. For years up in Selkirk, they kept re-electing that useless **** Bill Blaikie. Same with Lys. There should be limits as to how long a politician can serve at any level to stop this career stuff & living off the taxpayer during their terms & then when they retire.

Hey 98.6, it's good to have you back again. -
Dave Dickenson talks to the media all the time & continues to do so now. Last year, Rick Campbell the DC did as well. Rick Stubler hasn't talked to the media here yet. But I don't think he is very chummy with the media as it is. In all the years he's coached in the CFL I've never seen any interviews with him or read any of Stubler's quotes. Knowing the Calgary media & the way they cover the team they probably don't know who the other coaches are anyway.

No wonder you hallucinated that Justin Goltz was a great quarterback.

What a schizo thread this has become. Unbelievable. Wrestling, racism & hate. Doesn't get any better than that.
