And you know if he has a long term contract that he'll be spending his summers & falls off being paid by us to put his feet up. -
Bombers hire Queens DC Pat Tracey as Special Teams Coordinator

I thought Flutie was pulling in around $500K or more in his hey-day, though I think he got stiffed by the Stamps when Ryckman didn't pay him. That was the year I almost ran over Flutie with my car in the University of Calgary parking lot. Ah good times...good times... Actually Doug's highest salary was a million when he played for the stamps. I think that was for his second or third year. Flutie had a personal services contact with Larry Ryckman on top of his CFL contract with the Stamps. Something like $250,000 from the team & Larry was supposed to pay him $750,000 himself. As it turned out, Ryckman stiffed Flutie & he never saw a cent of the money. Ryckman stiffed a lot of people & got into trouble with the AB Securities Commission in the mid to late 90's & left for AZ where he still is today from what I understand. -

Like, who is worse? Tell us that? This isn't a flashy or big signing, I'll agree. It's a shitty signing. Holy ****. -
Well, we'll see. I think it'll be an open competition with the best guy winning. Like I said, Tate has 9 starts to BLM's 3 so actual game experience isn't much of a factor here.

Holy ****. The mediocrity with this team continues. The one guy.... ONE GUY.... who is as crappy a coach as there is & they hire him. -
So 17, say the Bombers trade for Tate, how would you feel about that? Somehow I doubt you'd be happy. Neither would a lot of fans here. How can you NOT SAY a 23 year old qb with all kinds of upside isn't the future for the Stampeders over an injury prone 29 year old with a chip on his shoulder? Tate has started 9 games in his entire CFL career with the Riders & Calgary. Tate has started 3.
-
Jacquie, please read my post from 5:18 pm yesterday where I speculated Drew Tate would eventually be traded. Hufnagel refuses to say if Tate is the starter. Whenever he is asked by the media who is the starter he says he has a few months yet to consider his options. Both Tate & BLM said yesterday in separate interviews on CHQR radio that they expect to go to camp & do the best they can do to compete for the starting qb spot. Huff hasn't made any mention of a pecking order at all this off season as to who is the starter & who isn't. It looks to be a real competition this coming June starting at training camp.
-
Not lose, Jacquie. Trade. As in trade Drew Tate. The only sure thing I see is that BLM is the only qb who will certainly be with the Stamps for the long term. He's 23 with a huge upside. Tate's 29. He has had injury troubles, has probably reached his full potential as a player & can be a hot head on the field. The Stamps can get a lot for him in a trade when they believe that BLM is ready to be a full time starter. On the flip side, maybe McPherson 30, is the one ultimately let go. With two & perhaps 3 starting qbs, things are going to be interesting again in Calgary.
-
The Stamps may want to go in a different direction now that Tate & BLM are under contract. Maybe Huff signed McPherson thinking he may lose one of those guys. Just because a player is under contract in January doesn't mean he'll make it to training camp. I agree it is a good move but in the CFL nothing is written in stone.
-
Something about Austin. He seems confident but arrogant. Like no matter who plays in his system he thinks he will win. I can also see him eat Dan LeFevour alive if he falters as the starter in Hamilton & they lose some games they should have won. Hank at times felt his wrath but I also think he let it roll off his back most time because he's been around for so long.
-
Probably because he wants to play professional football? That's not playing. More like standing.
-
Why the hell did McPherson sign there? I've always said the guy is in the game to collect a paycheque. Why play when he can collect the pay? He was happy backing up AC for years. Now he'll be happy backing up Tate & BLM... if he even makes it to training camp. Won't be surprised if he's cut.
-
I agree. I think it was ownership who were afraid that the Flames fanbase would revolt if they got rid of guys like Kipper, Bouwmeester & Iginla. They sat on these guys way too long & when Murray Edwards gave Feaster permission to deal he got what he could for those guys at the trade deadline. Kipper screwed the team by saying he'd retire if he was traded. Feaster was a poor choice for a GM. The guy knows virtually nothing about hockey & admitted he wasn't a hockey guy & had to rely on the opinion of others when making personnel & scouting choices. Feaster was like one of us here with his expertise. We could have done the job he did.

17, think about this. Quarterback salaries in the CFL have actually gone down with inflation. How much more would $250,000 buy in 1984 than $250,000 today? Hard to believe that a guy like Joe Montana in San Francisco was making just a bit more than Dieter Brock in 1984 when he was in Hamilton. -
I still think Tate will eventually be traded. With a new contract teams know he'll be around for awhile. I just can't see Tate being happy backing up BLM if he wins the starting job. At the same time, I can't see BLM happy being on the bench if he feels he is ready to start. For the short term, this provides stability for the Stampeders but I can't see this being a long term thing.
-
I saw Casey Chin play & he's all over the field as a tackler. He's going to be a good one. Mathias Goosen is another SFU player that should do well in the CFL.
-
We'll see how nice Drew plays when he doesn't start. It's all about Drew.

As I said before, developing a team thru the draft takes years. So, in the interim they have to bring in talent to carry them until these draft picks start to pay off. Thing is, we don't know if these picks even will pan out. Look at the Oilers who have been building thru the draft for years & how has that worked out? So it has to be a combination of drafting well, trades & free agency to build a team. I just think Chevy pleading patience will only go so far with a fanbase. Even Winnipeg that has more patience than a lot of NHL cities.
-
As I recall when the Jets returned & up to last summer before Chevy locked up the team's free agents, we weren't a capped team. We were more in the area of the salary cap floor. We had a lot of money to sign FA's. Chevy chose to lock up his players than go look elsewhere. We don't have the room anymore. Be interesting to see where the salary cap goes next summer & what we do as an organization as well.
-
Out here in Calgary the Flames suck but fans are going at least we're not Winnipeg. I laugh & go at least we're not the Flames. There's only a couple of players from the Flames I'd like to be Jets & that's Mark Giordano & Sean Monahan. The rest can be flushed down the toilet.
-
I think in the CFL it has to be about the money. Players don't get paid like the NFL so if a guy like Muamba or Collaros can cash in, he'll probably take it...There's no CFL team willing to pay Muamba $2 million a season to play but takes a home team discount at $1.5 mill to stay. As far as CFL contracts go, I have no idea what the top linebackers make but he should be at the top of the list & the Bombers should do whatever it takes to re-sign him & not be outbid.
-
those are actually good moves to make, bring in veterans so that the guys you draft have some time and less pressure to perform. They knew this was going to be a long road so why freak out when the GM is doing exactly what they said they would do? But the big free agents available we never go after. I'd like to see us do that... As far as veterans, yes, I agree. But it was Cheveldayoff preaching patience since the Jets got to Winnipeg & now suddenly it's like a light bulb went off in his head that things aren't working remaining status quo. Maybe Chipman told him to change, who knows? Hopefully we become more active on July 1st & trade to actually try to improve. Just because Winnipeg is a hockey city with knowledgeable fans doesn't give Cheveldayoff a pass to take years to build a winner. (See Edmonton).
-
As long as we keep signing over the hill players like Ollie Jokkinen & Sedogouchi, this team won't improve. This all comes back to Cheveldayoff. Chipman gave him a new & long term contract. I'm not saying or advocating he should be fired as clearly he won't but the moves he does make need or needs to make but doesn't has to come under more scrutiny than they are now.

If Kerry Joseph can hang around the CFL for a decade after he should have left then Burris should find a place to play as well.
