2023/2024 CFL (Non Bombers) Off Season News

That was always the case though... what do the other signings around the league have to do with this? I mean a guy like Purifoy resigning in Edmonton has no bearing on Schoen or Brady's situation. I haven't seen too many signings (if any) that I'd been wishing the player had made it to FA. -

Looks like Brown is down another potential landing spot. https://3downnation.com/2024/01/11/stampeders-give-qb-jake-maier-six-figure-signing-bonus-in-exchange-for-salary-cap-space/ -
Yup, Bighill (although he's very well paid) is another one who has basically said he took less to stay in Winnipeg in the past. He's never gotten to free agency since being here so we'll never know for sure what offers he could have gotten (I'm sure he does though). Here's a quote from him about it from a couple years ago.

If you don't think there will be other teams making offers to him, you might be the delusional one. Will he get the market reset he's hoping for? I doubt it but you're dreaming if you think coming back here will be his only option. I mean the Argos over-paid for an aging Andrew Harris so why wouldn't they for Brady who's entering his prime? There are other teams desperate to win (hello Regina & Ottawa) that would take him in a heart beat.

Splitting hairs but it was 5.9 yards per carry which gave him the 2nd highest average of all starting running backs (only Kevin Brown finished higher with 6.1). https://www.tsn.ca/cfl/statistics?category=rushing&stats=rushingYards

Doesn't sound like it. Seems like MOS just thought he'd be a good fit. Miller didn’t put much thought into coaching until he was offered the job last week. He got a taste of what it might be like last season, as he spent the whole year around the team, working with players in the meeting room, but his focus was solely on getting back on the field. “I didn’t expect to be offered this role, at all. It was very shocking when it did come about. He definitely put me at ease saying you know the game, you know where to put guys, you know what they need to do and you see it on film when there’s an issue and you know where we went wrong.” https://www.winnipegfreepress.com/sports/2024/01/08/miller-realizes-retirement-required-in-new-role-as-blue-bombers-special-teams-co-ordinator

What makes you think he wouldn't? I don't know for sure if he will but the only way to find out is for him to leave. If he can't cut it as a starting QB, it's better for us that he fails for another team. The team around him will definitely make a difference, as it would for any QB (see Zach's record in Sask), which is why he should avoid Ottawa. Arbuckle got exposed as a product of the system, one more year in Calgary would have been fine for the Stamps but I don't think his career turns out much different.

Because Powell is a season or two from being ready to be a starter? BLM is not the answer (even short term) and Powell isn't ready yet so Brown would give them their best shot. For us, Powell would be a good fit as he'd have another year (or two) to develop behind Zach. He'd be in a prime spot to take over for Zach (assuming he wraps up his career or we move on after this contract is up).

Their GM was with the Saints for years and they also have a history of taking guys from up here (Breaux, Biggie) so he's just continued that trend. https://www.thefalcoholic.com/2023/5/17/23724520/falcons-show-theyll-look-anywhere-for-talent-xfl-cfl-dee-alford-barry-wesley-jamal-peters -

Yeah I'm not sure I buy the BLM is our starter line. He was healthy for the ESF and they stapled him to the bench until garbage time. That said alot about how they saw him so other than his contract, what has changed? Edmonton said the same thing about Tre Ford but that didn't stop them from signing MBT. -

Daryl Peter "Moose" Johnston (born February 10, 1966) is an American former professional football player who is currently the Executive Vice President of football operations for the UFL. You were listening to an advertisement and nothing more. It's not a surprise he's going to promote his brand and not give the competition a second of free air time. I would do the same if I were in that position, since you're trying to attract the same talent, especially that higher end talent who could actually play in the NFL one day. -
IIRC, they can't cut him in season due to injury but in the off-season he's fair game.

Atlanta loves looking north for talent (Alford, Jamal Peters now Mack). They've worked out/signed some guys in the past too (Kalinic, Lenius), and picked up the only Bison in the NFL (Onyemata) as a FA this year. -
Masoli has a big bonus due next week so yeah Ottawa does need to make a decision soon. https://3downnation.com/2024/01/08/six-figure-roster-bonus-deadline-looms-for-qb-jeremiah-masoli-ottawa-redblacks/

Just thinking about QB's. BLM took a new deal for a reason - Hamilton is not wanting to roll with him or Schilz as their starter. Throwing that money at Schoen won't help them. -

It's such a small league that you could argue middle of the pack is still on the high end. AFAIK, MBT will be tied with Harris for 3rd highest paid QB (behind Collaros & Kelly). Don't recalling seeing any numbers for Fajardo's recent extension so he could be in there now as well. Kelly - Collaros: 600k range Harris - MBT: 450-500k range Maier - Masoli: 400-450k range Adams - Fajardo: 350-425k range Mitchell was at 500-520K but Hamilton now has an extra 300k to throw at Brown (or someone else).
