I want to talk about something that really grinds my gears
MOBomberFan replied to Mike's topic in General Discussion
Holy mistaken identity Batman, I meant Sorrentos. It took me 3 weeks to realize this. -
I'd think twice about geo-thermal. The powers that be here in Kelowna suckered a lot of higher-end home owners to switch to geo-thermal from natural gas heating, promoting it as "cheaper" and of course the thing that appeals to all those who want to feel like they are "making a difference", that geo-thermal was much more "environmentally friendly". All of those people that switched are now crying their eyes out, as gas is cheap while electricity costs here are going up substantially. My brother in law was one of the suckers and he now pays almost $500 a month in electricity while I am still paying $150 a month for my gas bill and our houses are roughly the same size. The problem is that the idiots here went to a "two-tier" system to encourage people to use less electricity (bullshit excuse, it's a revenue grab) and so if you don't use much electricity, your bill stays low, but if you go above the low tier you get screwed. All the people on geothermal HAVE to use electricity to heat their houses, and they are being bent over right now. And good luck trying to sell your house, not too many people want to get raped like that for their utilities. Gas is the way to go baby. Thanks for the heads up. Of all of the green options we're looking into, geo-thermal is certainly one we are willing to budge on. It's pretty easy to do for people on huge lots, but with a relatively smaller city lot the upfront cost is through the roof. We are fortunate in Manitoba to have such cheap electricity, but Manitoba hydro is also pushing people to use less... not because it's 'green' but because they can turn around and sell it to the states for a lot more than they sell it to me. Hence the solar panels. Even if they only generate enough power to run my fridge and stove, they pay for themselves on a long enough timeline. As for selling the house... geo-thermal or not... if I were to build this dream house, it's the house I plan to retire in!

Bob Wylie to be new O-Line coach - Confirmed

Yet we couldn't squeeze an ounce of optimism out of you if we tried -
Boom! This right here. Both sides of the argument would be singing koombaya if this was the consistent message. Start small: Composting. Rain barrels. Recycling. http://www.eco-fitt.com/mbhydro/ <-- efficient faucet fixtures and shower heads. Free and easy. No excuse not to. Feeling ambitious (and have money to burn)? The wife and I have been dreaming of building new, with insulated concrete form construction, geo-thermal heat, green roof and solar panels, grey water recycling... anything to get off the grid and be wholly sustainable, or as close as possible. The upfront cost is nothing compared to the savings in both energy use and reduced utility bills. It's worth the trouble.

As was Garth Buchko.Buchko essentially became the face of everything that was wrong with the Bombers and IMO that was unfair. The Bombers, Province and City needed their scapegoat and that's where he came in handy. I disagree with this. Garth was never front and centre unless it was a good news story No ? So Garth Buchko having to deal with the Water situation was a good news story ? Or better yet the first 2 delay announcements by him were good news stories ? Lapo being fired a good news story ? Should I go on ? Say whatever you want. Garth was a terrible hire, a terrible CEO and ran for the hills when the heat got to be too much. Zero respect for him as an executive. Was told recently by someone who worked for him in radio "he's a great sales man but a lot of people couldnt stand working for him, especially on-air talent. ****." Here are a few direct quotes from well known Winnipeggers who have worked with/for Buchko: ...Peter Ginakes, who owns and operates the Pony Corral restaurants that started advertising with CJOB when Buchko was there. "He's a good guy," Ginakes said. "Like solid. He was a pro at his job, great to work with. If you had a problem, he would deal with it. And he would reach out to his customers." Similarly, Larry Updike, who worked for Buchko for nearly a decade as the CJOB morning man, has only praise for him as a boss. "First-rate" said Updike. "He knows his craft very well and he tried to create a really positive working atmosphere in the station." From this WFP article. Larry Updike (an on-air talent) could have easily declined to comment but instead chose to give him high praise. I choose to believe he's telling the truth. As for running for the hills when things got rough... I think it was in his best interest and the Bombers best interest that he stepped down, so I don't think it was an act of cowardice quite as much as falling on ones own sword. When he was booed by the crowd at the IGF inaugural game it was pretty clear that he didn't have many fans, and that was going to be bad for business sooner or later. He did us a favor by leaving when he did, and I won't hold that against him.

Very interesting stuff guys. There is a lot to digest in that first link... I love the clock, it really puts into perspective just how brief our existence has been. Personally, I prefer my sexual reproduction first thing in the morning and right before bed, but to each their own I suppose.

I guess I'm just a big fat phony! LOL! I don't recall saying this is happening due to man-made climate change. In fact, it's something called Acqua Alta, and it has been going on since, oh about 600 AD or so. That pictures is from St Marks square, one of the lowest lying areas of the city. Nobody is surprised that Venice floods, it always has and always will. However, what used to occur only 5-6 times a year during the winter months (high sea levels has turned into an every day fact of life. What used to be temporary platforms on sidewalks are now permanent fixtures. Vendors make a killing selling rubber booties to ill-prepared tourists. If the sea levels continue to rise, Venice will experience Acqua Alta with increasing frequency and severity. The whole point is that nobody takes notice or gives a damn until it affects them in their back yard. It's pretty easy to say 'so what' when it's happening on the other side of the world. Interesting piece (no, I don't get all my news from Vice, it's just a great show) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MX78GPAuOik I'm not a scientist {collective gasp} but it seems to my untrained hippie eyes that the industrial revolution had some sort of clearly measurable impact on global temperatures and sea levels... I can't think it's just a coincidence, or easily dismissed as anecdotal evidence. edited for bitchiness

the problem is people who believe the earth has ever been or ever will be static. Climate has been changing since the Earth began, it is a dynamic system and it is always changing. It just happens so slowly we tend not to notice it until it's happened. I fully accept that the world has experienced climate change long before man existed. I don't accept that man-made CO2 emissions have nothing to do with accelerating or exacerbating climate change.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpEPyhqjRGg 15 minutes long. Despite how scary the prospect of sea levels rising is, this footage is breathtaking. Ever seen an apartment building sized chunk of ice fall hundreds of feet into the ocean? You can here. Below, this picture is modern day Venice... every day, from now on, for as long as anyone posting here today will be alive. But hey, these guys are smiling, so why worry? It's not like the island nation of Kiribati is now completely under water or the island of Papa New Guinea has been split in two by rising sea levels. Someone else will surely come up with a solution to all our make-believe problems.

BloiDei Dorzon 2.0 ? My immediate thought as well.

Wow, Pat White. I was dreaming about having him up here years ago. He is definitely one hell of an athlete. I think he played baseball after the first time his NFL dream came to an end. The guy can run; he posted a 4.55 in the 40yd sprint

First Bomber game and First Jets game - memories
MOBomberFan replied to kelownabomberfan's topic in Winnipeg Jets Discussion
I don't have the ticket stubs to confirm, but I'm 99% sure this was the first Jets game I saw when I was 8 years old. http://www.hockey-reference.com/boxscores/199301100WIN.html Waaaaay up in the nosebleeds, second row from the top I'm pretty sure. Teemu scored! I can remember people saying that without Mario Lemieux on the ice the Penguins weren't worth a damn. A few days later Lemieux announced he had to take time off to witness the birth of his child fight cancer. I honestly don't remember my first Bomber game. Football was a sport everyone in my family loved that I just never understood. Never saw the appeal until I was old enough to play. Alas, my fragile bird bones were having none of that... -
Two home games to start the season ...

I can confirm that at times this hometown crowd can barely bridle their blitheness in booing our bumbling bomber brigade. -
I want to talk about something that really grinds my gears
MOBomberFan replied to Mike's topic in General Discussion
My dad told stories about him and his buddies riding their bikes all the way from North Kildonan to the Dairy Whip on Marion (he called it 'Mikes Dairy Whip', I suppose after the owner at the time?). I have to say they make a really good chili burger. I also recommend 'The Burger Place' at Portage and Rutland; get a double-deluxe with cheese and a poutine if you like fat-boy style burgers, long naps, and have little regard for your own well being. -

Ossama AbouZeid He was the interim CEO prior to Buchko, and continued in his role a stadium project manager when Buchko arrived on the scene. He is now on the board of directors.

Who eats pizza with a fork and knife. Psshhh...you girl. And stop changing your name...for a while I was like...where did that guy come from. Ya weirdo. And gondola is good, I like that too. When the guy from Qo'nos calls you weirdo it should be taken as a compliment . I changed it to match my twitter handle, but since I discovered how much twitter sucks I'm considering changing back. -

I''m partial to Sargent Sundae and a stroll across the walking bridge to Assiniboine Park, but then I'm a St James boy through and through -

I have been Santa Lucia fan for some time, but I recently tried Gondola pizza... wow, was that ever good! Not over-heaped with toppings like at Santa Lucia, so you don't have to eat it with a fork and knife. I think it's the sauce that makes it stand out to me. And they have this in-house shredded salami salad with oil and vinegar dressing... to die for. I strongly recommend Gondola next time you do delivery. -
Any wagers on how long the new team in Ottawa lasts?
MOBomberFan replied to IC Khari's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
I hope Ottawa never folds again, as I too would like to see a 10 team league at some point. I think an even better question is: Who wins the cup first? Winnipeg or Ottawa? -
Considering the sort of abuse Goossen was handing out in his highlight reel, that won't be the worst thing that happens to us this season.

Bombers sign QB Robert Marve (unannounced)
MOBomberFan replied to Mike's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
RG is already etching Marve's name onto his replica Grey Cup -
I'm sure he will, and that's got to factor in to the decision to let him go in the first place. I don't recall if we let Vega out of his contract a little early, but he came right back to Winnipeg with positive things to say upon his return.
