If they hire Cortez it pretty much cements Burris as the teams QB. Another reason I want a different HC. I wouldn't say you're wrong, but what makes you think Cortez would value Burris (who probably only has another year or two in the tank) over Collaros or any of the other FA QB's? Just because he went out and got him in 2012? Wasn't Burris simply the best available option at the time?

Milt going to Morris MB to help business owner
MOBomberFan replied to kelownabomberfan's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
I don't know what is fact and fiction in this little drama, but it sounds to me like the location and the business plans put in place are the problem... I'm willing to bet that small venues with limited seating that over-specialize their menus tend to take a while to gain traction, assuming they ever do. I mean, Pots and Hands was apparently a great place for raisin pudding and chicken salad-stuffed cashew-encrusted baked potatoes, but that doesn't exactly scream door-crasher to me. Niether does Carribean cuisine in general. Not saying it's bad, and I'm not saying it's the only thing served at Thea's, but if I were betting between a Carribean diner and a Southern BBQ joint I'm going all in on the BBQ joint. This is the fifth business in the last four years to close down at that location. It may be easier for the business owners to blame homophobia and racism for the failure of their businesses. However, it's easier for me to believe that any combination of the service, menu selection, atmospehere, and quality of food played a much greater role in their downfall. And while I can't site specific examples, I'm willing to believe the mayor when he says there are numerous successful businesses Morris that are owned/operated by people of color. I've never been to Morris and probably won't have any reason to go there in the future... so I don't know why I even care... but this sounds a lot more like easy headlines than actual journalism, and it's a shame to see a community repeatedly painted with such broad strokes. -
Who the heck is Ted Goveia?
MOBomberFan replied to kelownabomberfan's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
This bit from the Argos website in April 2013: Toronto Argonauts General Manager, Jim Barker announced today that Ted Goveia has been named the team’s Director, Player Personnel. Goveia has spent the past two seasons as the club’s Director, Canadian Scouting. Since 2011, Goveia has been responsible for recruitment strategies in both Canada and the U.S., scouting various NFL pre-season camps as well as coordinating the CFL Canadian Draft for the Argonauts. He first joined the Argos in 2010 as an assistant coach and prior to that spent 15 years in various coaching and recruitment capacities throughout the CIS and Canadian Junior Football ranks. With this announcement, Goveia becomes one of just two Canadian Player Personnel Directors in the CFL (Craig Smith, Saskatchewan). Barker remarked, “Ted has worked very hard to get this promotion. He started as a Canadian scout, and as a former CIS and junior head coach he was well suited for this role. Over the last three years, he has expanded his contacts and the scope of his work, and is now ready for this position.” Commented Goveia, “I’m very excited to take on this role. Our scouting department has synergy and I’ve enjoyed working closely with Jim Barker and Chris Jones to continue to find and secure top quality talent for our coaches. We have something good going here in Toronto and I believe our team can only get better as we work hard to build a roster that competes for the Grey Cup year after year.” -
From unofficial heir apparent to official heir apparent. Good for him.

Here is a 10 minute video of Wade Miller following the announcement that Tim Burke was fired. Miller discusses the firing of Tim Burke, his thoughts on possibly retaining Burke as a coordinator, and fields questions about the new GM and HC. When asked about Khari Jones specifically, he says he won't comment on potential HC candidates and let personal relationships influence his decision... he insists the GM will select the HC, not himself. http://new.livestream.com/WinnipegFreePressNews/events/2544481/videos/34735766 From the WFP

When we hired Tim Burke as our DC I saw it as an enormous coup for the team, considering that he was arguably the best DC in the league and had a wealth of previous coordinator experience. But it was LaPo who hired him, and if LaPo didn't think that Burke suited the team for whatever reason then LaPo wouldn't have hired him - best DC in the league or not. The point is that a Head Coach should have the freedom to choose his own staff, not have staff assigned to him no matter their credentials. My two pennies. Edit: I should add that if the new HC actually wants Burke around as DC I'd be thrilled to keep him on.

Won't separate from the pack if I take the same guy as everyone else.... I'll go with Messam. -
I'm actually a little surprised it took as long as it did for someone to pick him up. Wonder what he was doing to keep busy.

Some of us think Elliott was a good player, better than anything we currently have. Some of you disagree. I think if we kept Elliott as our starter and cut Buck lose in the offseason we would be in better shape than we are now. Sadly, we will never know. Seriously, if there were a pro-Elliott/anti-Elliott debate thread it would be 90 pages long, and would repeat itself over and over. Are we really going to do this again?

Typical Sun headline...hardly an exodus!....not so sure it is about the chaotic atmosphere...more like MONEY! The lack of winning and negative atmosphere plays as large a roll in attracting and retaining players as money does .. what incentive does a top tier free agent have to stay in (or come to) Winnipeg when there's little chance of making the playoffs (and making the extra coin associated with a post season birth)? If two contracts are being considered, both offering similar money, what would entice someone to join an organization that's constantly under the microscope and in a state of continual change? Loyalty, Commitment, We're in this together? Or is that a thing of the past. It's certainly a nice sentiment, and how much an individual values such things will vary from player to player. One thing is for sure though: these guys aren't signing with any team out of the kindness of their hearts. They need to get paid, and making the playoffs is a big part of maximizing your earning potential. Fact is, as long as the Bombers are in a tailspin they'll have a harder time attracting (or retaining) quality players with options. That has really nothing to do with Loyalty and Commitment. Because if it did what you're suggesting by making this statement (and even with your remark it varies) is that well-compensated professional athletes place loyalty and commitment very low on their priority list which is simply not true. Some, and I repeat some professional athletes and the organizations they represent achieve the best of both worlds (compensation and loyalty/commitment). With the Bombers, hard to say how it's going with this. I try to remain optimistic that we have the right people in places (or are looking for them) to build this type of culture. And to add one more thing, for the people who think winning solves all of this are dead wrong. Because losing also shows a lot about a person's character and if their first reaction is to jump ship then I say need a boost . . . Certainly loyalty and commitment and so on factor in to every players decision to choose where to play. So do other things such as 'can I realistically be a starter?', or 'does this team have a terrible coaching staff?' or 'does this team have a hope in hell of making the playoffs?'. We agree that those factors play a role, we disagree on how important they are to the vast majority of players, American or otherise. Money talks, and there is a direct corrolation between a teams success on the field and an individual players earning potential. Did Philip Hunt display a lack of loyalty to the Bombers by signing in the NFL for more money? Would Akeem Foster have chosen to come to Winnipeg if he wasn't traded here first? I bet he's choked up that he's all but lost a playoff pay cheque, and all the positive thinking in the world won't replace those dollar bills.

GDT -- Game Day: Does Anyone Still Care?
MOBomberFan replied to Noeller's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
I'm sure I've said as much while watching college teams I know nothing about play. I mean... it's football, what more do you want? Of course, it's a lot more fun to watch your team win than lose. -
GDT -- Game Day: Does Anyone Still Care?

I had a tough time convincing someone to come to the game with me after my wife opted to sit this one out. Most of my 'casual fan' buddies have already sworn not to attend another Bomber game til sanity is restored. Interest in the Bombers may be at an all time low... people don't even jingle their keys at the people bailing at the end of the 3rd quarter... but I'll be there, as always. -
