Day 9 Recap Brady Oliveira- “For me, I’m just looking forward to that game and finally to put on that jersey with my last name on it and to finally go against an opponent rather than my teammates,” began Oliveira after a late Monday afternoon practice. Kenny Lawler - “He’s caught a lot of footballs that have been around him… and some of them sometimes aren’t near him and he still catches them,” said head coach Mike O’Shea. “He’s shown everybody here that he’s got exceptional focus and very good hands. Those are obviously very positive things for a receiver.” Michael Couture - “We’re a physical, tough offensive line that knows what it is doing. It plays as a unit. I’ve seen it from 2016 and with how little change there’s been they’ve been able to keep that standard high. Chris Streveler....exposed!

STEINBERG’S MMQB: NINE PLAYERS TO WATCH IN 2019 1) Winnipeg Blue Bombers: Chris Streveler A lot of Bombers fans are excited about Streveler’s ceiling if given the opportunity to start games regularly. While I don’t think Matt Nichols is in immediate danger of losing his spot atop the depth chart, Streveler has shown enough to give Head Coach Mike O’Shea an option if his incumbent struggles. Even without a changing of the guard, Streveler will get plenty of action in 2019, as Winnipeg uses him in a unique “change of pace” fashion in short yardage and beyond. 2) Hamilton Tiger-Cats: Brandon Banks It has been quite the rapid evolution from Banks over the last few years. From a talented returner used sparingly in Hamilton’s offence, Banks exploded as the league’s most dominant receiver in 2018 under June Jones. Banks has two things to prove this season, though. First, he’s out to confirm his status as an elite receiver without Jones as offensive coordinator. And, after suffering a broken clavicle in Week 19, Banks also wants to confirm he’s none the worse for wear. 3) Edmonton Eskimos: Larry Dean With the retirement of longtime middle linebacker J.C. Sherritt over the off-season, Dean has enormous shoes to fill. Much like they did in replacing Mike Reilly with Trevor Harris, the Esks have once again filled a hole as good as you possibly can in free agency by signing Dean. Over his three CFL seasons with Hamilton, Dean has established himself as an elite MIKE linebacker culminating in 105 tackles last season, good for third in the league. As such, fans in Edmonton won’t notice much going from Sherritt to Dean. 4) Toronto Argonauts: James Franklin Franklin might top my list of most interesting players to watch on any team this season. Yes, 2018 didn’t go as planned for Franklin in his first opportunity to start regularly, but that wasn’t an ideal circumstance. This season sees Franklin installed as Toronto’s starter from the start of camp, which is a much different scenario than unexpectedly taking over from Ricky Ray early on. Franklin finished 2018 strong and also led the league with 14 rushing touchdowns, so this season shapes up to be fascinating. 5) Calgary Stampeders: Reggie Begelton When Begelton got the opportunity to start games at receiver last season, the guy absolutely went off. After Kamar Jorden suffered a season-ending injury in Week 12, Begelton stepped in and ensured Calgary’s offence didn’t miss a beat. Unforunately, Begelton suffered a season-ending injury of his own in Week 16, but he’ll be starting from the get-go this season, which could lead to some big time production. 6) Montreal Alouettes: Ciante Evans Due to a stint in the AAF, the Alouettes added Evans very late in free agency, but they’ve landed a bona fide stud in their defensive backfield. Montreal has a lot of questions entering 2019, but uniting Evans and Tommie Campbell is still a massive coup. The pair were dominant together in Calgary and could give the Als the best lockdown corner duo in the CFL in 2019. 7) BC Lions: Duron Carter We’ve known for years Carter is one of the league’s most talented receivers. Partly of his own doing and partly due to circumstance, though, Carter has never put it all together for a truly dominant season. Joining Mike Reilly in BC for this season, though, presents Carter with the best opportunity he’s ever had to do just that. If Carter can stay healthy, I see a career year ahead. 😎 Ottawa REDBLACKS: Brad Sinopoli It’s not a stretch to say Sinopli is the one impact playmaker the REDBLACKS did not lose this off-season. As such, Sinopoli is going to be more in the spotlight than he’s ever been entering his ninth CFL season. Ottawa’s quarterback situation is very much up in the air and they’re without a multitude of proven targets at receiver. That’s why Sinopoli will need to be at his consistent and dominant self over the middle in 2019. 9) Saskatchewan Roughriders: Solomon Elimimian I know he missed the majority of 2018 due to injury and I know he ended up being released by the Lions, but that doesn’t mean Elimimian isn’t still an elite linebacker. Remember, BC released the four-time league all-star for salary cap reasons, not for performance issues. With an opportunity to fit him in, the Riders pounced a week later and it was the right choice. Elimimian was on pace for another 100-plus tackle season in 2018, which would have been his third straight. 8 Storylines camp day #8 * One of the early observations at camp has revolved around QB Matt Nichols, his offseason training regimen/diet, his overall health and how much more mobile he looks through the first week of practice. * The Bombers O-line, which has been the picture of stability and continuity over the last few years, will feature two new faces this year after the retirement of Matthias Goossen and Sukh Chungh’s exit to B.C. * The 7 Canadian Starters Related to the above is where the Bombers might start their seven Canadian starters in Week 1 and beyond. Running back Andrew Harris, the aforementioned Neufeld, receivers Drew Wolitarsky and Nic Demski are all locks. The Bombers will go with a Canadian at centre in either Speller or Couture and at safety, where Jeff Hecht and Derek Jones are in a battle for the starting safety chores. Where the seventh Canadian starter lines up remains a bit of a mystery, especially with some of the moving pieces on the O-line. Gray is getting a lot of opportunity with the starting lineup and there is certainly depth to go all Canadian on the interior of the O line. But veteran defensive tackle Jake Thomas is quietly having a solid camp and the team does have the depth to go Canadian there, with veteran Maxx Forde and three 2019 draft picks in Jonathan Kongo (who is still recovering from a knee injury and has yet to practice), Connor Griffths and Tariq Lachance. * The starting defence over the last few days has featured Chandler Fenner and Winston Rose at corner, Brandon Alexander and Marcus Sayles at halfback and the Hecht/Jones combo at safety. Day 8 Recap Chandler Fenner, the 28-year-old vet has been taking turns at the cornerback position. “At corner there’s less to read and you get a lot more space. Things happen a lot faster inside the box. It’s definitely a good pace for me. it’s definitely a competitive place to be. You are going to end up a lot of times one-on-one with the receiver and I like that. I like that competitive aspect of it.” Bombers head coach Mike O’Shea was asked Sunday after practice about the status of OL Patrick Neufeld, who has yet to practice. “He’s close, but I know when we need him. And for all of these guys it takes a lot of convincing to let them know when we need them – especially when it’s not on their timeline. They want to be out there. Paddy’s no different. He’d like to be out there working with his guys and we’re not letting him right now. “I don’t think Paddy’s a guy that needs a lot of reps out there. It’s certainly more comforting for guys around him when he’s out there because he’s so smart and sees the game so well and communicates very effectively. The benefit is we get to see other guys and put other guys at different spots so you get to try some different combinations out. 6 Intriguing Players to Watch in the Preseason for each CFL Team Bombers: The Bombers have been building through quality scouting throughout the Kyle Walters era and are just now reaching their peak. That doesn’t mean their job is done however and there will be spots up for grabs in the receiving corps, defensive backfield and offensive line. 1. Mike Jones, DB, Temple Jones is strong in man coverage and breaks up passes with violent hands. How he adjusts to the intricacies of the CFL game remains to be seen, but he could develop into a shutdown player. 2. John Santiago, RB, North Dakota The back from North Dakota that everyone is excited to see is draft pick Brady Oliviera but he was part of a one-two punch. Santiago is a CFL quality back and while he’s a long shot to make the roster due to the ratio, the tape he produces might catch another team’s eye. 3. Thiadric Hansen, LB, Kiel Balt. (GFL) When you sleep in a bus station just so you can play for peanuts in Germany, you know you are passionate about the sport of football. Hansen is living his dream and it will be fascinating to see how his “at all costs” attitude translates on the field while trying to earn a job on special teams. 4. Asotui Eli, OL, Hawaii Perhaps the most talented lineman, and certainly the biggest wildcard, in the draft, Eli will be suiting up for the first time in a calendar year and winning a starting job is not out of the question. I’m excited to see how his injured knee holds up under the stress of gameplay. 5. Rasheed Bailey, REC, Delaware Valley State Bailey has turned a lot of heads in training camp and for good reason. He was absolutely explosive in college, blowing past defenders like they were pylons. He has bounced around a lot since college but could make a home in Winnipeg. 6. Matt Hazel, REC, Coastal Carolina Hazel got the attention of the Bombers at mini-camp and has maintained it early in training camp. He boxes out and high points the ball exceptionally well. Day 7 Recap More involvement by Andrew Harris. They’re working him in slowly. Harris has been working closely with fellow Oak Park alum Brady Oliveira, as the club’s second-round draft pick gets his introduction to pro football. “He’s definitely showing he can play. He’s a big guy, he’s quick and fast and what’s most impressive is how he attacks the meeting rooms. Right from Day 1 I told him he can sit beside me and so I communicate with him throughout meetings quite a bit.” The Bombers added two import offensive lineman Saturday in Jamar McGloster and Israel Helms, while releasing OL Frank Sutton and DL Evan Perrizo. “They’re guys we like that we wanted to take a look at that just became available,” said head coach Mike O’Shea of McGloster and Helms. “There was a push by the NFL to sign some guys and bring them into camps and so when they become available is always hit and miss. We’ve got a couple of guys that are nicked up, too, so in order to practice efficiently and give the guys the appropriate amount of reps you’ve got to bring other guys in.” Additionally, the club has placed guard/tackle Manase Foketi on the veteran exempt list.
