  1. Wouldn't even think of starting a thread if it wasn't for the fact this is for the best sports announcer I could think of - up here in Canada anyways... Happy Birthday Bob Irving!
  2. A lot of the posters here are self-moderating types, self-moderators so to speak, shelf modifiers in a sense, cabinet makers, if you will. Well, you know what I mean.
  3. After Week 8 Bye - Ottawa ?‍?I will try to post with some class... ?‍? Wally's wise words: Iain MacIntyre - the Province “We’re not going to play scared,” Wally Buono, the new-old coach who hired himself to replace Jeff Tedford, said of the Lions first play from scrimmage. “I don’t want us to play scared. I want us to be aggressive. Aggressive sometimes means you get big and run the football, and other times it means you throw the ball downfield. We’re not afraid of anybody. Tonight we were better. You respect your opponents, but you don’t fear them.” 37: The number of days the Lions will have gone between home games when the Hamilton Tiger-Cats visit Vancouver a week from Saturday. It is the longest in-season stretch without a home game in franchise history, which makes the Lions’ 4-2 start even more impressive. B.C. is already 3-1 on the road. 0: The number of significant injuries the Lions sustained – as far as coach Wally Buono knew at press time – one week after B.C. lost five players on defence, four of them starters, in Calgary. One of the replacements, defensive tackle Bryan Turner, had four tackles and two sacks. ?‍? Forgot to mention JC Sherritt's impressive dive for a TD after that deflected boot by Williams ?‍? more kudos for the fans of Winnipeg: Don Landry - CFL "Have to hand it to the good people of the ‘Peg. So many of them waited out a storm delay on Wednesday night, one that saw the Blue Bombers’ game versus Hamilton starting pretty well when it should have been ending. For two and a half hours, they milled about under the partial roof of IGF and whiled away the time by watching baseball on the big screen." - Bryan Burnham is giving BC a kind of Luke Tasker, Brad Sinopoli, Marquay McDaniel vacuum cleaner option week in and week out. The kind of receiver that keeps the first downs coming and provides even more opportunity for guys like Shawn Gore and the Manny Show to shine. - Hey, Smilin’ Hank. All good now? Or do we give you a new nickname? Rilin’ Hank. Dave Campbell 630 Edmonton radio The team was scheduled to practice Monday but cancelled practice to opt for more rest time. (?‍?Edmonton hosts Montreal Thursday, August 11) -the team signed Internatioal defensive backs Brandyn Thompson and Demetrius Wright. The Eskimos made a trade with the Saskatchewan Roughriders acquiring National linebacker Alex Ogbongbemiga in exchange for National defensive lineman Gregory Alexandre. Ogbongbehmiga was a 2016 third round draft pick of the Riders and in played one game this season. The Eskimos have released International defensive back Deion Belue who registered eight defensive tackles in three games this season. Ben Matchett Tom Higgins has joined the Calgary Dinos as Defensive Co-ordinator. Justin Dunk - CFL.ca Quarterbacks who threw for more than 300 yards went 3-1 in Week 7 – the lone exception was Matt Nichols needing just 246 yards through the air to help Winnipeg score 34 straight lightning delayed points. Every pivot that completed over 67 percent of their throws won too. Ed Tait - on probably starting Foketi at right tackle: The Bombers have been chasing Foketi for a while now after the West Texas A&M product signed with Denver in 2013 and attended their Florida mini-camp in 2014 before staying with New Orleans through preseason that year. “Manase Foketi is a guy that we’ve liked for a number of years and we finally got him up here,” said Bombers head coach Mike O’Shea. “We do expect him to jump right in. He’s been here with us through camp. He’s a very athletic football player. He’s quiet, but he knows what he’s doing and he’s been very patient. Saw Edmonton last week. Toronto and Winnipeg today. Doug Brown reports Prior to Matt Nichols last two starts, the Bomber offence "possessed the ball" 27 minutes a game. After Nichols, it's up to 34 minutes a game.. ?‍?So, 7 minutes more to do something, or to put it another way, 7 minutes less for the opposition to do something. And that's worked too. 80 yards difference per game less against the D. And 10 points less because of the extra time on Offence. ?‍?See the trend? The offence has to produce so that the defence can stop the opposition from producing. Special teams has helped immensely in that regard too....for field position. I bet you can't guess which Montreal team holds his rights... the Eskimos made yet another trade with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, reuniting Canadian defensive tackle Gregory Alexandre with former Eskimos head coach and defensive co-ordinator Chris Jones. That makes eight players off of last year’s championship Grey Cup roster who have made their way to Regina this season. ?‍?I gotta ask. What's with all the deals between Hervey and jones? Ken Wiebe Wpg Sun “I bounced around the (NFL) and decided to give the CFL a shot,” said Foketi, who signed with the Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent in 2013 but was released near the end of training camp. “I had always pushed it off, but this year I decided to go with it. Buzz: The Bombers limited the league’s most dynamic returner, Brandon Banks, to merely 3.8 yards-per-return, and also returned a punt for a touchdown by Kevin Fogg. His impact was not only restrict to the ground game as he caught five passes for 36 yards. Messam made his impact felt in the fourth quarter when the Stamps needed to close out the win. In the quarter, he had nine carries for 72 yards and had one-yard touchdown run. In the fourth quarter, he had three large runs of 19-yards, 15-yards and 11-yards. He was responsible for six out of 35 points scored by the Stamps, but on the drives in which he carried the ball, the Stamps scored 22 out of 35 points. After his great performance on Thursday night, Messam now leads the CFL in rushing with 404 yards. Milt Stegall @BoLeviMitchell is great for this league. Works hard, talks smack, and plays at an elite level. Gotta love it ?‍?Well, I've seen it written somewhere that if the Riders are cheating..they ain't doing it well, or words to that effect. BC Lions Den From some of the responses I am getting to my question, maybe the #BCLions need to revisit blacking out a few home games. ?‍?The Blue Bomber QBs have to be extra careful before they 'throw up' a ball for Thomas Mayo to run under. Kirk Penton's INSIDER: CFL coaches and managers give their anonymous thoughts on what they’re talking about behind closed doors: -Edmonton needs to run the ball more. (Mike) Reilly is getting the (bleep) knocked out of him ... I keep telling my young guys, coaching is putting players in position to make plays. Moving Shawn Gore to the boundary side has him playing like an all-star. He’s a Most Outstanding Canadian candidate if he keeps playing like this ... -The Stamps are the best team right now and the quarterback (Bo Levi Mitchell) is driving them. They are getting some guys back, so they are almost back to the roster they planned to dress. They’re going younger at some spots, and those guys need to be consistent ... -My co-ordinators say that none of those TSN panel guys have called them. They’ve never called me. Never been to one of my practices this year. I understand why (Henry) Burris went off on them. They have all the answers and they don’t know (bleep) ... -(Jerome) Messam is a (bleep). We’ve told our guys that making him run laterally is the best way to slow him down. When his shoulders are square, he’s a big (bleeper) running down hill ... -I wanted to puke watching Winnipeg beat Hamilton. They just out-coached them. Now we have to worry about the Bombers because those two wins over Hamilton gives them a shot. They might make the (bleeping) playoffs in our division ... -Nothing changes with Drew Willy in Winnipeg. There’s no way he takes an in-season pay cut — unless he plays for Jim Popp. I’ve seen lots of quarterbacks play a few good games, so (Matt) Nichols isn’t the new No. 1 there yet ... -If the Riders’ struggles continue, they won’t accept a down season and walk into a new facility with no changes. With (Chris) Jones having a guaranteed contract and (Jeremy) O’Day having off-field ties to the community, the hot seat will belong to (John) Murphy even though he had all that success in Calgary ... -Burris is throwing more and more wobblers and his deep accuracy isn’t as good as it was a few years ago. But I was done by my early 30s and he’s still playing and doing some good things at 40 ... -I’ve coached against Wally (Buono) in the past, but I’m watching what he’s doing in B.C. this time and he’s showing us why he wins. They really don’t try to fool you. They’re basic, sound and tough on both sides of the ball. Fundamentals instead of scheme ... -Saskatchewan’s offensive line is playing better lately than I thought they would. They’ve had a lot of injuries in that group ... -(Boris) Bede is an import, so it makes it tougher to keep giving him chances because they have a wide variety of options. Players like the loyalty, but it’s tough if you keep losing games ... -Hank (Burris) made some good points, but it’s always how and when you make them. No quarterback wants to be judged that way ... -(Kent) Austin keeps running the same plays out of the same formations. It’s what he did in Toronto and what he did over there in Saskatchewan. The film doesn’t lie. We know he’s going to his scissors concept when he gets under pressure. -BY THE NUMBERS 54 – Percentage of successful two-point convert attempts this season. 12 – Turnovers committed by the Ticats in their two games against the Bombers this season. +8 – Winnipeg’s turnover ratio, which leads the league. 59 – Percentage of successful one-point convert kicks by Calgary’s Rene Paredes. In a decision that is better late than never, Jim Popp is finally going to replace Boris Bede as the Alouettes kicker this week. The young sophomore out of Laval has made only seven of 16 field goal attempts this season, although he’s a surprising 11-for-11 when it comes to converts. ?‍?It now looks like the CFL should have a separate, weekly section exclusively for Chris Jones news... Ed Tait “This is one of the more injury-plagued seasons I’ve seen through the first half of a year,” said quarterback Matt Nichols. “We’ve had six new starters on defence in one game. Same on offence. We had three receivers go down in one game in Edmonton and guys just stepped in and did their job. That shows me this team is buying in to being ready when it’s your turn. ?‍?It now looks like the CFL not only has to keep track of the Nationals, going in and out of the lineup in Saskatchewan, but also will have to get facial recognition software for all the 'extras' going in and out of the lineup. Murray McCormick - Regina Leader Post The Riders announced the signing of national quarterback Brandon Bridge on Wednesday. He was released by the Montreal Alouettes on Aug. 1. Bridge is one of five quarterbacks on the active roster. Since mini-camp in April, the Riders have had 12 quarterbacks on the roster, practice roster or injured lists … ?‍?It's absolutely untrue that Masoli, upon hearing of his demotion to backup with the return of Collaros, phoned firstly, Kevin Glenn to ask for guidance, nor did he phone Henry Burris to ask for advice going forward... ?‍?Tumble and roll celebrations are at an all time low in Edmonton as the Eskimos are 8th in sacks this year with 11....Ahead of the Riders 8 Bombers currently sit with 14, like Calgary, and trail Hamilton and BC at 22, Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto are at 15. uh, the Bombers still are allowing the most sacks at 21. Then Montreal 20, Ottawa 18, Toronto, Hamilton 17, Edmonton, Sask, 12 BC 11 and Calgary 8. ?‍?On a related note Max Campbell - stampeders.com Having fielded five different starting combinations through six games, the big boys up front have been turning heads with their ability to maintain a high level of play. The group has surrendered a league-low eight quarterback sacks ***Sask. just got 2 more on Calgary - so 10 now. and been flagged for just four procedure calls through Week 7. Sources tell Herb Zurkowsky, of the Montreal gazette, the Alouettes’ Jim Popp threatened sweeping changes while addressing the team at Olympic Stadium. "Popp threatened the players, starting with his offensive-lineman, stating they run the risk of being replaced by rookies earning minimum salary. But he then brought the rest of the team into focus, suggesting no player was irreplaceable while serving notice their play must improve or they risk unemployment." AND - “The damage is done. How does he survive this?” said one longtime CFL executive. “No matter how bad it gets, you can’t say that.” .....“You don’t know what I said. You can question (it) all you want,” Popp said. “You can hear someone mumble. That’s fine. Maybe those are the guys that are in trouble?” .....“The room’s hanging on by a thread. Sunday’s speech, combined with this travel schedule and bull—- stadium walkthrough ain’t helping his cause,” another player texted. “It could get ugly if it goes bad tomorrow.”(Thurs game Aug 11) CFL News Several sources told Montreal Gazette veteran DB Billy Parker challenged and took offence w/ some of Popp’s comments - @HerbZurkowsky1 #CFL Mike Beamish - on Sask and their many players @TSNDaveNaylor Never actually counted heads, but Sask. practices ( IMO) resemble a Cecil B. During their incessant roster shuffling they have gone through 12 quarterbacks since training camp and, according to CFL transactions, made 190 official roster moves. That’s a little higher than normal; for example Calgary recorded only 142 transactions since June 1." CBC News Alerts: ?Tornado warning issued for Southern Saskatchewan. Wednesday, Aug 10 ?‍?Just a clarification - these last two postings are not related...? CFL game notes - CFL.ca staff Stoppages on the decline: Three of four games in Week 7 clocked in at 2:46 or under, while last week’s games had only seven total challenges — the lowest for any week during the 2016 campaign. Meanwhile, three of four games recorded 19 or fewer penalties, reducing the average to 19.7 penalties per game (a 24 per cent drop from this time last season). Red zone struggles: The offences struggled to produce in the red zone last weekend, scoring only 13 touchdowns on 29 red zone trips (45 per cent). Closing the gap: Road teams continue to hold a substantial edge this season, winning 17 times and adding a tie in 28 games — but home teams are closing the gap after going 3-1 in Week 7. The 2,000-yard club? Only three players have reached the elusive 2,000 receiving yards club in CFL history (Allen Pitts, Terry Greer and Derrell Mitchell), but Derel Walker (668 yards) and Adarius Bowman (682 yards) are both on pace to eclipse that mark. Reilly’s pace slows: Mike Reilly’s pace has slowed after landing under the 300 passing yard mark for the first time this season in Week 7, but he still projects to throw for 6,543 passing yards — a pace that would put him second all-time on the single-season list behind only Doug Flutie’s record of 6,619 set in 1991. CFL History The strong safety was known as Rover, until QBs realized they could draw them off-side by shouting Red Rover Red Rover We call X over #CFL.? ?‍?A turn back on to CooCoo Avenue... CFL History #Riders confirm that Saturday's 50/50 draw will be used to pay this week's fines & bankroll future fines. #CFL ? James Miller - lastwordonsports.com (covers the Riders) Chris Jones, the head coach and general manager of the Riders, was quoted in the Leader Post, “I really don’t care what other people say about us”. Jones continuedafter Wednesday’s practice at Mosaic Stadium. “I’ve always been one of those people who do what I do. If they don’t like us, then great.” What would have been a more fitting punishment? Should the Riders have had to forfeit their win from earlier this season? Should Jones have been suspended for a couple of games? The latter may have been the best course to take. Chris Jones should have been fined and suspended for a couple of weeks. The league had a great opportunity to come down hard enough in this case to deter this activity. Eric M. CFL Can't say enough about #Bombers D-line. They completely took advantage of the #Argos starting two backups at C & RG. Run defense was unreal. #Bombers' offense played throwback, West Division football. Run the ball physically down #Argos' throats when everyone knew it was coming. Said before that Darvin Adams was biggest injury in EDM, & perhaps overall at the time. Kris Adams sure doesn't look capable at filling in. ?‍?Bomber thoughts... Paul Friesen. What would a 3rd straight win say about the #Bombers? Ian Wild: "I'd say we're heading in the right direction.. getting better every week" Denmark says team chemistry is hard to explain: "You never really know until it happens, but you can feel it when it does." #Bombers. #Bombers QB Matt Nichols on what's changed: "The main thing is the belief that we're supposed to go out and win football games." Bob Irving The blue bombers are back folks. Believe it. This group is a contender. You don't win 3 in a row by accident. ?‍?Love, love, love how Goosen lugged Harris into the end zone after Harris plunged through would be tacklers. Montreal @ Edmonton It marked the second time in seven games the Als failed to score a touchdown. ?‍?26,061 in attendance...in Edmonton? CFL - TSN The Alouettes failed to find the end zone, scoring their 12 points on a 4-of-5 effort from newcomer Anthony Fera on field goals. The Eskimos stringed together their 23 points on two field goals, two safeties, a quarterback sneak on third down and an interception returned for a touchdown — and did so despite losing three fumbles throughout the contest. Derel Walker had a game-high 132 receiving yards on 10 catches. Adarius Bowman added 107 yards on nine catches as the league’s top receiving duo once again proved unstoppable. Duron Carter was held to just three catches for 28 yards despite a team-high 10 targets, ending a run of three consecutive games with at least 100 receiving yards. They ran only five plays in the first quarter on offence compared to the Eskimos’ 25, ?‍?Here's the killer stat T.O.P. - the Alouettes mustered only 23:24 with the ball in their possession, compared to 36:36 for Edmonton. ?‍?Roughing..by tapping For the 3rd straight game Reilly has had RTP penalties called on him, but this tap to the helmet by Hebert on Thurs. is the weak extreme of calling that penalty. Toronto @ Winnipeg ?‍?A really big play in the scheme of things in the Bomber game came after Nichols threw his 1st interception of the year. I know I sagged there, and was hoping we could hold them to only a FG. Then things got Foggy, with Kevin Fogg's great interception on Kilgore. The game had changed. We got our mojo back at that point, and the game as on. Fogg - two interceptions, a sack, four tackles, a fumble recovery and 118 yards in kick returns. - Ed Tait ?‍?Harris 19 carries for 123 yards and a tough run and toss for a TD. The 'tough' part was Harris, the 'toss' part was Goosen, who practically threw Harris into the end zone. Brilliant. Harris has 2 of the 5 100 game rushing totals this year. - Ed Tait. ?‍?Denmark 7 for 195 yards and 2 TDs. He had 3 last year total. He had 57 for 718 yards last year. Maybe the Eskimos will feel their wrath? *According to 3 Down Nation’s John Hodge, the Bombers surrendered an average of 3.2 sacks-per-game with Drew Willy at the helm. All you can do is beat the team in front of you, and the Bombers have done just that despite a number of injuries to key players. ?‍?As mentioned by Hodge, Manase Foketi's name wasn't really mentioned in the game...a good thing. *The Bombers now have a league-leading 27 takeaways in eight games this season. The team in second place? Toronto (16). *Bomber strong-side linebacker Moe Leggett now has twice as many pick-sixes this season (2) as the Saskatchewan Roughriders have interceptions (1). *Nichols has recorded just one turnover this season, a second quarter interception to Argonaut safety Thomas Gordon. To Nichols’ credit it was clear from TSN’s reverse angle that the pick came as a result of a poor route from first-year man Kris Adams. Aside from Adams’ mistake, Nichols has played clean football. 6. This is hilarious really. 3 plays where it nearly cost us dearly? That probably happens in every friggin' game. And I'll tell you, there are probably 3 plays every game that we can say it nearly could have won us the game.
  7. Well, they're all damn good, if that's what you mean...
  8. I didn't get the memo about his being close to getting pulled, but I do realize he wasn't performing well. Yet, because it's a team game, we were still in it until his performance picked up, which it did. We're winning, with Nichols only playing average, so isn't that a good thing? Will Nichols play lights out in the future? - I don't know. Will the ST keep playing in a very solid manner? - I believe they will. Will the defence keep getting us those turnovers? - Maybe not to the extent they have been, but yes, I believe they will. Will Medlock keep his kicking up and above average? - There is little to believe that he won't keep it up. Its football, and right now we're outperforming other teams...for a variety of different reasons. Yes, it's on every player to pick up when another lets down, and that's what the Bombers are doing. Its bad enough when we pick on player's poor performances when we lose, but to dwell on them when we win? I don't see the point. We all understand how it works.
  9. Hey, it's easy to pick out the bad points in any one person's performance, as each and every player out there commits errors and makes poor decisions. We could have a field day picking apart Nichol's performances, but I chose to highlight some good points that led to a Bomber victory. You, on the other hand...
  10. I Just want to pass along some 'love' for our kicker Justin Medlock. He is now hitting his stride and performing in the manner for which he is being paid. Without digging too much, I believe he has hit 11 FGs in a row and is 17-21 for the year, including the 2 in Friday's game. But it isn't only the clutch FG kicking that I tip my hat to Medlock, but also his punting. Using Friday's game a s reference point, Lirim had 1 FG and punted the ball 7 times for 341 yards or for a 44.4 yard average - net yardage 213 or a 30.4 average. Medlock punted the ball 9 times for 400 yards and the same average - 44.4. His net yards were 355 for a 39.4 yard average....a full 9 yard difference in punts. Now, I realize punt returners can affect this average, and cover teams, but it shows Medlock does place the ball well, as highlighted by that well placed kick in the coffin corner later in the game. Justin, this one's for you ?
  11. Nichols was 17-28 for 246 yards..not player of the week stats, but what isn't shown in the stats, that was emphasized especially on one drive, is when Nichols stood in the pocket and delivered a strike, without happy feet, when blocking was breaking down. That drive led to a TD and broke Toronto's will. I thought right there that it wasn't a play that Willy would have completed...result? ...end drive...no TD...closer game. It's the little things that Nichols has done, (quick releases, quick reads, good fakes ie. the long Denmark TD, and the nice touch passes on th long throws) that has taken his 'average play' and pushed it enough to guide the Bombers to wins. Real nice to witness that our backup QB can come in when needed and get the job done. That hasn't happened in a long time.
  12. The Bombers just have to keep doing what they're doing to win this game tonight. Win the turnover battle, win the ST battles, ie. field position etc., and stay away from the majority of penalties. Nichols just has to do what he's been doing. No more, no less. Under Nichols T.O.P. has increased by 6 minutes. That needs to continue. Toronto had a closed practice this week...a surprise in store for the blue? Also, will we see Dan LeFevour at any time? Tor has15 sacks Wpg. has 14 140 points allowed Wpg have allowed 169 Wpg 9 ints Tor 6 Forced fumbles Bombers 11 Toronto 7 Turnovers 12 Tor 10 Wpg 165 points Tor has 148 points total Wpg passing totals 2114 Tor last at 1605 Rushing 498 Bombers 405 Tor. Sacks allowed 21 -17 for Tor. Other teams are now catching up to the Bombers in terms of sacks allowed. A better figure will come out after our break..when all teams have played the same amount of games.
  13. 1st of all, who do you mean when you say..."I think he's pretty accurate"? If you mean ripper, I disagree. If you mean Dunk, you'd have to ask the rip man why he's angry..
  14. Regarding Chris Jones.... It should come as no surprise at all that he is embroiled in yet another brouhaha. When people say he is an egotist, they also mean that word doesn't near qualify what this guy is proving to be. He's in his own category. An elitist egotist. The gold medal winner if this was an Olympic event...for the Russians no less. He obviously has NO regard for CFL rules and respects nothing more than winning, and his name connected to it. The CFL should consider the actions of Jones in totality, not just this latest schtuff. It really doesn't matter that it's Saskatchewan involved in this. That's just his vehicle, but they hired him, and will have to pay the price for it. Come down hard. A huge fine, a draft pick/picks and severe restrictions/suspensions (an ankle bracelet, so to speak) for the near future. That cavalier attitude of Jones has to be addressed.
  15. Wrong again Ripper.. I read extra articles all the time and breaking news, and interesting comments, and bang on reporting, When I look down to the author's name, it doesn't surprise me it's Justin Dunk. I thought weeks ago, that this guy is doing a good job. I still do.
  16. Well, seeing as you're a rider fan, I guess you don't know any better, but you have to have respect in order to talk smack, and you haven't earned that yet.
  17. Week 8 Game Notes - CFL.ca Staff BC Lions pivot Jonathan Jennings has eclipsed the 300-yard mark in three straight games. If he can do it at home against Hamilton this week, he will join Most Outstanding Players Dave Dickenson, Casey Printers and Doug Flutie as the only BC QBs to pass for 300-plus yards in four consecutive games. BC’s Alex Bazzie leads the league with six sacks this year thanks in part to his remarkable consistency, heading into Week 8 eight a sack in every game so far this season. Bombers defensive end Jamaal Westerman has notched a sack in four of his last five games. Montreal’s leading receiver Duron Carter has three straight games of 100 or more receiving yards. Calgary’s kicker Rene Paredes started the season 4-of-8 in the kicking department, however he has now hit 16 consecutive field goals, including all five attempts in a 35-15 Calgary win over the Riders in Week 7. Leading rusher Jerome Messam is 15 yards away from joining the top-75 all-time rushers. Messam has a CFL-best 404 rushing yards Bo Levi Mitchell continued his streak with two TD passes versus Saskatchewan last week. He’s tied for the fourth longest streak in league history. Mitchell is also looking to extend his 300-plus passing yards streak to six in Week 8. Ian Wild added nine tackles to reach 54 this season and is on pace for 139. That would be No. 2 all-time behind Solomon Elimimian’s 151 in 2014. MONTREAL VS EDMONTON How badly do the Eskimos and Alouettes need a win this week? Neither team is currently in a playoff position if the playoffs began today. The last time both teams did not make the playoffs in the same year was 1971. - BJ Cunningham "Edmonton has a good defense. We were able to see on film a few things that should be able to help us out in the game. If we do our jobs and execute our plays, we can win this game." Thursday’s game will be at 9 p.m. (eastern time). However, Cunningham said he is not especially affected by games played in western Canada. “Everything depends upon rest. During our week of preparation, we need to make sure we have rest periods and we remain well-hydrated so that we are ready for the flight, the road game, and the jet lag,” Cunningham said. ?‍?Questions of our own.. QBs - Kevin Glenn vs Mike Reilly. Glenn has a better chance of staying upright as the Eskimos only have 11 sacks. Meanwhile Montreal has 15 and it's imperative Reilly doesn't get pummelled like last week's contest vs Ottawa. Which receiver sets will win out? Edmonton - Bowman, Walker, Watson, Getzlaf and Coehorn vs Montreal - Carter, Cunningham, Giguère, Lauks, Lewis and Charette. RBs Edmonton - John White Montreal - Rutley, and Logan Reilly vs the Montreal defence or Glenn vs the Edmonton defence? Edmonton could be in trouble again...
  18. What's really grinding about this situation is now the CFL.ca will have to re-design their whole web page to include a section exclusively devoted to what's going on with Chris jones news in any particular week.
  19. The CFL will then have to look at draft picks...
  20. I hate admitting this, but I have not voted at all for the last TWO weeks. As in the Bombers have won the last TWO weeks. Coincidence? And, it's only taken me the last TWO minutes to decide I will not be voting again this week TWO (sic)
  21. So, the faster we make this mistake..the better?
  22. After Week 7 Bye - Toronto This is worth mentioning again because it was so very impressive and the story will live on for a long time... John Hodge "An impressive number of Bomber fans in attendance for Wednesday night’s game stuck around through a two-and-a-half hour weather delay (roughly 16,000 by my estimate) to watch a 2-4 team play at home where they have won just seven regular season games in three-plus seasons. That type of fan dedication would be the envy of any team in any league, bar none." "This is the contest future generations of fans will refer to as the Late Game. A massive weather delay, 10:00 PM local kick-off, C.J. Roberts’ pick-six, eight missing starters, the return of Clarence Denmark, Stegall’s Ring of Honour induction, and 34 first-half points? That’s the story of the Late Game. May its legend live on in Bomberland forever." ?‍?this sounds familiar Santino Filoso 3 down nation- "Elizondo needs to start drawing up plays that feature vertical routes instead of screens and out routes and don’t back a defence off or push the ball down field." - -Here’s a weird stat for Ottawa R-Nation to chew on. With the win, Logan Kilgore becomes the 5th QB to beat the Redblacks in his rookie start. Kilgore joins Dan Lefevour, Jonathan Crompton, Trevor Harris and Mitchell Gale as other rookies who earned their first career wins against Ottawa. Herb Zurkowsky Canadian QB Brandon Bridge, who started the regular-season finale, has been released by the #Als. Justin Dunk While Bridge may get another look as a quarterback, there are some CFL personnel men who believe the 6-foot-4, 230 pound Bridge would be a better fit as a wide receiver and would like to develop him at that position. ?‍?I see Popp is still figuring out his SMS and Bridge financing.. CFL sources say the Montreal Alouettes asked Canadian quarterback Brandon Bridge to take a pay cut and released him when he refused. Bridge also declined to take a practice roster spot. - Justin Dunk Andrew Bucholtz Canadian players are highly valuable to CFL teams, as 21 of the 44 players on the game-day roster have to qualify as "nationals" (previously non-imports), but those players only count as Canadian if they don't play quarterback, where nationality isn't counted. ?‍?So, to summarize, he's not valuable as a National as a QB, BUT, if plays WR say, then he becomes valuable as a NI and can be included as a counter on the roster. Unfortunate rule. Read Bucholtz's column for more: https://ca.sports.yahoo.com/blogs/cfl-55-yard-line/brandon-bridge-is-the-latest-canadian-qb-cut-thanks-to-the-cfl-s-roster-rules-211331306.html?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter He continues..."Not counting quarterbacks is incredibly unfair when compared to players at other positions, and it makes it highly unlikely we'll ever see a Canadian QB" ?‍?Musings... Where's the Eskimos defence? Do the Riders have a defence? Is Ottawa wavering? Nobody can figure out the Argos. Or the Alouettes for that matter. Popp is lucky to have an employer such as R Wetenhall. Is Calgary as good as their two very close wins? Is Jennings for real? Gale? Masoli? The Riders, and ALL their fans were expecting a huge game in Montreal - just not from the Alouettes. Unfortunately for Montreal, nothing of value could be derived by that victory against Sask play. ?‍?Did you know Scott Milanovich contacted Mike OShea about kicker Lirim hajrullahu? According to Frank Zicarelli : "I just asked him his thoughts,’’ said Milanovich. “Sometimes you call and you don’t expect to get any information. I knew O’Sh would be honest. He just said he really liked the kid and that he had a rough year, he had lost his confidence a bit. Something to that effect because I don’t want to put words in his mouth, but it went something like that." ?‍?Got to be salary/SMS related... Didier Orméjuste - I'm told the Alouettes have been shopping around Vaughn Martin to several teams but so far, they haven't found any takers. @CFL Rob Vanstone Regina-Leader Post ?‍?apparently, Martin is now staying with Montreal... montrealalouettes.com The Montreal Alouettes announced on Tuesday that international defensive end John Bowman signed a contract extension with the club through the 2017 season. BomberBuzz -Jamaal Westerman: Six pressures, an unblocked sack, but a QB-stop nonetheless, and ridiculous run-support, Westerman was, once again, the Bombers’ best defensive player; Westerman is unblockable, and his counter/club move claimed victims three times three times to provide severe pressure on QB Mike Reilly. -Khalil Bass: It’s no coincidence that Bass has had a considerably larger impact on the defense since he’s been allowed to play linebacker rather than basically playing defensive tackle, aligning head-up on an offensive lineman on the line-of-scrimmage on first-down Herb Zurkowsky QB Greg McGhee, who spent some time in 2015 with the @BCLions, worked out for the #Als on Tuesday. .??@TSNDaveNaylor @garylawless @CoachOTSuns riders flagged for QB out of position before but never 4 2 many imports. -@mjcurtisw Justin Dunk 3downnation (prior to games in week 7) -After posting four consecutive 100-yard receiving games, Adarius Bowman was largely shut down by Winnipeg, recording just three catches for 43 yards. -Ciante Evans, 23 years old, took the place of veteran cover man Fred Bennett in Calgary’s starting lineup against B.C., and the youngster played very well. He made sure tackles and came down with the crucial interception that led to the Stamps game-tying major. Evans made a strong case to stay on Calgary’s No. 1 defensive unit. -Saskatchewan Roughriders: A beat up Riders squad got beat down by Montreal. The 38-point loss was the worst defeat suffered by any team through six weeks of the CFL schedule and it’s the largest margin of victory over a Chris Jones-led group. -Bear Woods, has registered at least five tackles in every game for Montreal and sits second in the CFL with 37 stops. Last year, all season, QBs eclipsed 300 yards 40 times. #CFL BlueBombers.com Winnipeg’s 51.4 per cent conversion rate ranks third in the CFL, behind Edmonton (53.3) and Ottawa (52.0). The Bombers were dramatically better on first down last week (Edmonton) but their average gain of 5.4 yards remains last in the league. CFL.ca No longer is that the case, as a 30-23 loss at home to the Bombers on Thursday night has seen Edmonton fall from the top three, where it’s been comfortably situated all season, to sixth in the Nissan Titan Power Rankings. Edmonton Defence - That unit ranks last in the CFL with only eight sacks and is allowing the second-most yards in the league at 417.8 per game. -It’s not that the Riders are 1-4, it’s the way they’ve gotten there — their Chris Jones-coached defence ranks seventh in the league with 398.2 yards allowed per game and sits at the bottom of the CFL with eight sacks. The offence, while without Darian Durant the past two and a half games, ranks sixth in total yards (345 yards per game) and second-last in first downs (100). Game Notes: prior to week 7 - Scoring continued high matching last week's highest weekly average of 56.3 points per game - Penalties were at their lowest level of the 2016 season at 17.0 per game. - The 17.0 penalties per game matched the second-lowest weekly total in the last 3 years (2014-16). - Three of the four games were decided by 7 points or less (two decided by 3 points each). - 8 out of 24 games in 2016 have been decided by 4 points or less. - Teams that have trailed at the end of the 3rd Quarter have won 7 of those 21 games (33%) - Week #6 had the season's FOURTH Overtime game (Calgary 44, BC 41). - Winnipeg won on the road in Edmonton for the first time since July 2006, a stretch of 9 previous games. - Two games were won with 4th Quarter scoring drives (Total in 2016: 8 in 24 games). - Net Offence averaged 747 yards per game, the second-highest week of 2016. - Parity: Eight clubs now have at least two wins. - Average scoring to date at 52.3 ppg is 6% above last season (49.2). The % of offensive plays that are rush attempts has dropped to an all-time league low of just 29.3% (33.5 per game) Player Highlights: - Five QBs passed for 300+ yards including rookie Logan Kilgore of Toronto in his first career start. - BC's Chris Rainey made it five kick return TDs with a 95-yard runback. - CFL Field Goal kickers made 23-of-25 attempts in Week #6, easily the best week of the year at 92%. - Matt Nichols of Winnipeg and Logan Kilgore made their first QB starts of 2016 and both won. - Bo Levi Mitchell pushed his career winning % to .808 at 31-7-1, the highest on record in CFL history. Mitchell threw a TD pass for a 20th consecutive game. - Turnovers are at just 4.25 per game, the second-lowest average per game in CFL history. - Edmonton's Mike Reilly passed for 300+ yards for the 8th consecutive game, one off the CFL record of 9 set by Sam Etcheverry in 1956 and tied by Kent Austin in 1991. Following the normal post-game reviews of our game stats, Montreal’s Bear Woods was credited with 13 def. tackles in the July 25th game at Toronto. That is the season-high for any player in 2016 and tied Chip Cox’s club record of 13 set on Jul 1/12 at Calgary.  4 Overtime games: BC and Calgary played the fourth OT game of the 2016 season last Friday night – the 96th regular season overtime game in CFL history (the O/T rule has been in place since 1986). This year’s 4 OT contests make it halfway to the all-time record of 8 in one season set in 1992 and tied in 2002. There were 5 overtime games in 2015 but just 4 from 2011 to 2014.  300-yard passers – 25 times in 2016: In 2016 QBs have passed for 300+ yards in a game 25 times, a frequency of more than half of the starts made through 24 games. In all of 2015, there were only 40 games of 300+ yards recorded by CFL QBs. The 25 games of 300+ yards extrapolates out to a pace that could reach 84 or more than twice as many as 2015. HAMILTON VS WINNIPEG ?‍?Winnipeg - 0 turnovers ?‍?Kevin Fogg's unlucky streak hit 2 during the game, as his punt return for a TD was called back on a penalty, or so-called penalty. Eyebrows were raised throughout the Canadian Football League when veteran rush-end John Bowman signed a one-year contract extension with the Alouettes, taking him through the 2017 season. To have him sign another extension before the sixth game of the season, has pay cut written all over it, according to numerous sources, who believe Bowman has now agreed to take less money this season in exchange for a sweet bonus payment next January, which would count against the 2017 salary cap. “It smells,” said one league source. Knox recorded two special teams tackles in his CFL debut and was a big part of the special teams effort that held Brandon Banks to a punt return average of 3.8 yards. Knox was used a gunner on the Bombers punt coverage units, a position typically reserved for defensive backs. Even at 220 pounds, Knox was routinely able to beat Ticat special teamer Giovanni Aprile down the field on punt team. ?‍?Depth - More and more, comments are being made as to the depth on the roster of the WBB. 23. You're argument is immediately flawed when you start it with this statement. There is no one versus the other. It is strictly about having 2 capable QBs. Good gawd, you'd be the first one yammering about the depth at the QB position if Nichols went down and we had to rely on Davis and Bennett. Willy can still get it done...
  24. Foolish talk about releasing Willy at this point. It took us forever to get a decent backup QB. And that's who's playing now. Whether you want to admit it or not, we need two capable, experienced QBs. Willy may have lost the starting role for now, but he's more than capable to step in at any time and do well, even as a 'backup'. The season is barely into the 2nd third of the year. Do you really think they're going to release "the salary" with all that's going on? They still very much need his presence. Davis and Bennett are 3rd and 4th for a reason and I just don't see them being ready now, maybe not even in the near future. The Lulay example fits the situation very well. The top 5 thing isn't worth the paper it isn't written on. If there is a problem SMS-wise, it will be handled without the release of Willy....and rightly so.
