The Demski run annoyed me too. Demski is significantly worse up the gut than Harris. I can understand giving him a carry or two every couple of games on a sweep or even a counter but there’s no benefit to the element of surprise when you run him up the gut instead of Harris because he goes down so easily. The D doesn’t even need to be prepared for it because you get one hand on him and he’s on the ground. Just nonsensical from Lapo.

I wish you held Nichols to the same standard you hold the defence to.

Look, I’m far from the only one who saw this from Nichols today. And last week. And the week before. You can’t win with a QB that panics so horribly under pressure. Tonight he panicked when there was no pressure! Sometimes the circus just leaves town for a guy and we’re seeing that in real time with Nichols. The D wasn’t amazing today but it was fine. They survived a short field after the fumbled punt and allowed two TD drives only. We can live with that performance. And believe me, if there was even the tiniest chance O’Shea or Lapo thought Nichols could get them a couple first downs on the last drive to end the game, they would have kept him in.

It’s impossible to say that Streveler isn’t as good a passer as Nichols. Maybe he is, maybe he isn’t. And if Nichols is checking down 15 times a game, it doesn’t matter if he’s Patrick Mahomes.

You can’t say the two deep balls should have been caught and discount the 10 or so checkdowns to Harris or Demski. That’s the problem with Nichols and it will always be the problem. It’s why he can’t and didn’t move the ball late in the game when they could have ended the game with a few first downs and it’s why most people who have seen this movie over and over again didn’t expect him too. I don’t want Nichols to suck. I want nothing more than this team to have a great QB and win the Grey Cup. But expecting that to be Nichols is a fool’s errand. Some people will support him because there’s an understandable fear of the unknown but the guy is done.

He’s good.

Really bad luck for Nichols that we scored two punt return TDs on the drives where he was going to march the team down the field himself. Just really terrible timing for him.

He’s not wrong. But I’d have used more tact.

One game is a hell of a sample size.

We know for certain at this point that Nichols gets happy feet and doesn’t progress through his reads. At least at the absolute bare minimum, Streveler can move the ball with his legs. He’s young and may never amount to anything but you have to take the shot. Stamps didn’t know what they had in Arbuckle until he was pressed into duty and he’s looked real good and confident. I wouldn’t call the gadget plays and garbage time reps a legitimate look at what he’s capable of.

Yeah... O-line was tremendous again today. Tons of running lanes AND the pocket was clean.

You’re overrating the positive impact Nichols has had on this team’s record and underrating how backbreaking it is when he can’t move the ball in close games. The players would never admit it but it’s a massive handicap.

Some people will see what they want to see.

I have an immense respect for your football knowledge and posts. This doesn’t tell 1/10th of the story today and you know it.

So today was just an anomaly and we’re screwed?

Obviously we’ll never know for sure but pretty good chance we lose that game if Nichols plays that final drive. Good for O’Shea or Lapo or whoever it was. I’m shocked they did it. History suggested it wasn’t ever going to happen but good for them for making that call.

It’s VERY interesting that Lapo has decided that when they absolutely need to move the ball, Streveler is coming in. You love to see it.

I wish I had more confidence that we could get three first downs here. But let’s start with one.

Some nice diverse playcalling by Dickenson. Would like to see what we do after this drive when a few first downs ends the game.
