  1. He was always lined up correctly. To answer your question though, I don't think it is uncommon for a ref to tell a guy he is lined up illegally. WR's checking with the linesman is standard operating procedure at all levels of football. Has been for years and is a well established practice. No need to change that, just need the officials to get it right, which they do virtually all the time. In 40 years of football, this is first time I recall seeing a linesman mess it up like this.
  2. I've been involved in football since the mid '70's as a player, coach, board member, executive, gm, and even at times as a game official. I normally tend to side with the game officials, because I know how tough it is to make every call, especially the "subjective" ones like holding and PI. That being said, the player checked with the official, and the official "okayed" his position. This is standard procedure from Atom to professional level. I don't ever recall a "no end" flag being thrown well after the play, it is virtually always thrown right at the snap. I thought the flag was going to be for an "objectionable conduct". I really don't know what the story is, but I know when I worked as a game official, we always wanted to be fair, and were always instructed not to throw flags for meaningless penalties that could change a games outcome. This type of "tickytack" flag is just wrong. If there is something grossly wrong away from the play, you throw it.....a cheap shot, an intent to injure or other serious penalty, but not a guy being a foot back from the line of scrimmage at wideout after he checked with the official. This really ranks as one of the worst pieces of officiating I've seen at any level.
  3. By far the best CJFL teams are on the Prairies. It's not even close, PFC teams have won 15 of the last 30 national championships, and the last 7 straight.
  4. Only 10 minutes of scrimmage and still giving Brohm reps. WTF? As a coach, you don't give all the reps to one QB for a few reasons: 1. You want to have some time to talk to him, without slowing practice down. 2. You want to coach him up while observing (and critiquing) what the other guy is doing. (ie mental reps) 3. You don't want to wear him out too badly. Many coaches don't want a QB throwing more than 40 to 50 passes in a practice, including the indy or skelly sessions. Same reason as why baseball teams rotate pitchers, they only have so many good throws in them. (I know that a baseball pitch is more aggressive on the arm than a football pass, but it is the same theory) Like it or not, Brohm is still the #2. Personally I would have given Davis those #2 reps, as I don't see any future for Brohm. I don't think Boyd would have a good enough handle on the offence to take reps at this stage. The reps are also for the RB's, Receivers, and Linemen too, so you need to be efficient in your practices. I've been involved with minor football teams that were down to one QB for whatever reason for a practice, and they would rotate in a coach to run some reps during scrimmage for the above reasons.
  5. Love Lancasters face mask! The QB's and the DB's were all imports, while the receivers were both Canadians. Gabriel was one of my favourite non-Bombers back then. Guy could play ball.
  6. I'm a bit surprised that Henoc hasn't made his decision yet. Surely offers have been presented, and I'm really hoping he signs with us. Top level NI talent is always welcome, and the more the merrier. I think that there is room for both Henoc and Hurl to get lots of playing time in rotation at both Mac and Wil, and on specials.
  7. I believe that it is possible for us to win 4-5 more games this year, based on the defence continuing to play at a high level. A couple of big Specialty team plays can swing a game as well. So long as we have a QB that can get the ball downfield, the offence will be better because that threat also opens up the underneath stuff as well.
  8. Very rare to trade a starting Canadian O-lineman. They must feel that the Goose is ready.
  9. Wrong firing decisions from the past: Murphy, Ritchie, Berry, Lapo. I still have confidence in Walters, I believe he just needs the time for his long term drafting strategy to work out. I'm getting nervous for O'Shea. I like him, I'm cheering for him, I want him to succeed, but his rope doesn't have much slack left in it. I've been a very patient Bomber fan for a number of years, and will stick with my team. Even I have to admit that there have been 2 home games this year that were just plain awful to sit through. I want to see him show more emotion on the sidelines. I'm not talking about the ranting and raving coach, but get more fired up when guys make a play, and get more in the face of those who take dumb penalties. The scripted answers in the post game press conferences don't bother me as much because really as a boss you either support your staff, or you replace them. You don't call them out to the press and then try to rebuild them. Just show more passion for the game!
  10. Agreed, that's the first thing I noticed on the play... not only was the punt right down the middle it also had no hang time ... the ST unit was basically SOL right from the beginning... Lirim shoulders most of the blame for that particular punt return... Yep great point. I was against the wind and LH was just trying to kick it as far as he could, instead of concentrating on putting it to a corner (which he is usually good at). We say someone 'vacated' a lane but the punt cover team in the huddle knows where the ball (as in what side) is being kicked too - and it's never kicked 'in the middle'. There's just so many things going on during a punting play that we really don't know. But that being said - 3 TD returns from punts and it's only the halfway mark is unacceptable, but so is our crappy defense (if you bothered watching the Eskie/Cal game - lots of two and outs there but didn't see a D get 'tired' - that "our D got tired in the second half" excuse a lot of you use around here is pure BS) and pathetic offense. At least we're consistent all across the board. Except for the fans - fans are still the best IMO. For the record Troy Westwood said that LH followed Bob Cameron's golden rule when kicking into the wind by hitying it low and as far as he could. The TD return is on the players and/or scheme set up for that type of punt. Having said that giving up 3 punt returns for td's in 10 games is not very good. I don't know how firing Tracy and MOS now having to take on ST duties will help this team but the yhad to do something and firing Bell-fail is not an option at this point in the season. He is here to stay at least this year and for all we know they love his scheme and are blaming the woes on offence on lack of execution by the players. I can confirm that this is Bob Cameron's position on kicking into the wind. I've heard him say it first hand.
  11. Of course they are splitting reps between Marve and Brohm. Practice is a teaching and learning session, it's not a game. As a coach, you give your starter some reps, then you discuss what he did. You don't stop practice while having this discussion, you put the "other" guy in. Then you go back to your starter to give him more reps. Practice can also be a grind, and you don't want to wear your starter out. Typically, by the time you get to #3, you may actually be running scout on offence to give your defense some looks of what the other team does.
  12. I've been concerned on Grey Cup ticket pricing for quite some time. I go every year, so this year is cheap for me (no flight, no hotel). I can afford it, but this is a gate driven league that relies on the middle income fan for it's survival. It seems a shame to me that people who have supported the league for years find it hard to buy Grey Cup tickets due to the high cost of the tickets. I fully understand that it's a premium event that commands a premium price, but at the same time, "you gotta dance with them that brung ya" Personally, I'm excited to have the game in my town, and I'm hoping that more Winnipegers step up!
  13. MOS was right to use Willy against BC. It got us a needed win against a divisional rival. Marve played ok vs Toronto, and we had our chances to win that one, but unfortunately came up short. I'm sad that Willy got injured, but that type of play could happen at any time in this game. It's unfortunate, but not much a coach can do about it. Fans second guessing coaches isn't exactly new, but as someone who's coached (amateur) since the mid 80's, one thing is clear to me: you can't play out of fear of injury. Coaches who have professional medical advisors, (trainers, doctors, therapists) need to let the professionals make the medical calls about who can play and who can't. Once a player is cleared, the coach needs to have good communication with the player regarding their ability to play. There's the old question "are you hurt or are you injured"? No one should play "injured" and subject themselves to unwarranted risk and increased damage to an already compromised body. Some players can play "hurt" while others can't. Willy was clearly good to go against BC. He played extremely well, and ran the ball better than I've seen him do so before. To somehow suggest that playing against BC was related to his injury in Hamilton is weak speculation at best. Had he been limping around, I could understand the argument, but that wasn't the case.
  14. I've attended the Grey Cup every year for quite some time, and have been to the Grey Cup in every city, save Hamilton. I've frozen my butt off in Calgary, Edmonton, Regina, Winnipeg, and even last year in BC due to a cold air vent right above my seats, yet I keep coming back year after year, because it's a great event and I love the game. I'm quite disappointed in the slow sales in my home city. I have my 4 seats for this year in Winnipeg, and I'm flying my daughter home to go to the game with us. There are plenty of reasons to slag Regina, and plenty of reasons why they are not my favourite Grey Cup destination, but the local fans there definitely support their Grey Cup hosting events better than we do. Come on Bomber fans, time to step up and support the league, the team, the city! BTW, hotel websites show very few rooms left in Winnipeg, so the out-of-towners are stepping up, its the locals that need to fill the park!
  15. I'm sure that a number of teams will talk to him, but I don't really think anyone is "desperate" to get him. If they were, they could have traded a late draft pick or a neg list player to Calgary and got him without a bidding war. Calgary would have been happy to get something rather than nothing, and the buying team would have locked him up under his current contract. Interest: yes. Desperate or bidding war: no.
  16. I've been to them all, except Tim Hortons, and the renovated Ottawa facility. (I've been to both the old Landsdown and Ivor Wynne.) My Opinion: Winnipeg, Hamilton, Ottawa, Montreal (Molson, not big Owe) BC Edmonton Toronto (will move up at BMO) Calgary Regina.
  17. 1982 was a tough one. The Bombers had such a stacked team loaded with All-Stars and a real dynamic offence with William Miller at RB and such an awesome O-line. Lost in the Western Final to those darn Eskies by 3 points. I was crying as I really loved that 1982 team. IIRC that was the one we lost due to a questionable roughing the passer penalty against John Helton. The penalty wiped out an INT by Vince Phason that would have sealed the game for us. Like it was yesterday.
  18. I recall the rain, the puddles, the body sliding antics, but I don't recall lightning hitting the goal posts. I rarely missed a game in the '80's. Great time to be a Bomber Fan!
  19. I've been to games in every CFL city: Ontario has some great fans.....I wish there were more of them, but they have great fans.
  20. Brad Mikoluff #74. He still has eligibility for the Rifles, so if the Bombers like him, they can keep him as a non-counter all year. He is able to practise with the Bombers and play with the Rifles. It's a nice insurance deal for the Bombers because if they need a punter in a pinch, they can sign and dress him and he already knows the playbook, the players, and the coaches. This is a special deal open to all CJFL players who didn't play CIS. Each CFL team can have up to 4 local junior players in camp under this program. I suspect that the Bombers will keep both Mikoluff and Braedy Will around this year. Self edit: If he does dress for a regular season game, he loses the special status. At that point he would have to sign a contract and be a "counter".
  21. If you manage to pluck someone off a PR, you would have to place them on your 46 man roster. That's pretty much what i thought so i don't see the bombers doing that. Correct, but.....there is a short window. A player must be cut before being offered a PR spot. If he declines the PR spot, he can accept a PR spot on another team without being placed on the 46. Once he has agreed to the PR spot however, the rules come into play. Also, IIRC, if a player is on the PR, and a new team tries to claim him, the current team can maintain him by moving him onto their 46 for the next game.
  22. From the list of Rider cuts: National defensive lineman Tyler Langlais I'd love to see the Bombers brings this kid in for a look.
  23. With a recognition of my home town bias, I see: 1. Stamps 2. Bombers 3. Eskies 4. Lions 5. Riders. I think Durant is done, and I think Chamblin has worn out his goodwill. You can't replace a RB simply because of 1 fumble, and you can't overrule all of your assistant coaches. His blame throwing tendencies will cause him to short leash too many players, and this will inhibit growth and development. If Durant has recovered, they could do quite well, but without him, it will be chaos.
