I've never been a fan of firing coaches during the season. It certainly didn't work last year, and around the league there are very few cases where it does work. Mack made a huge error in firing Lapo. All of the top assistant coaches (potential candidates) are busy coaching with their teams, and they are locked up until the end of the year. Bringing in someone on a temporary basis doesn't get a new plan in place to properly build a team going forward. All it does is cost you a bigger pile of money, and creates the impression that the interim guy should "get a full shot with training camp and all". I believe that as bad as it is, we're best to stick with the current coaches and, assuming there is no miracle, can them after the final game. Firing now would be more about punishment rather than planning.

Last couple of years, the Wildcats were the stronger of the 2 Edmonton teams. Huskies, however, beat the Wildcats last week. Carter is a Winnipeg Blue Bomber. He's not available to the Rifles unless the Bombers put him on waivers for 24 hrs. Rifle game is at noon Sunday. Kids 14 and Under are free.

I'm a fan of all three, but the bison are a bit unknown featuring a new QB. Rifles went toe to toe with the Hilltops, and put up big numerbers in the opener in Saskatoon 1st downs: Rifles 30, Hilltops 22 Net offence: Rifles 435, Hilltops 420 Basically the Rifles lost to the 3 time defending champions due to 6 turnovers. If they can play that well against the top team, I like the chances against the Huskies at home.

I'm not so sure that any team is willing to give up their #2 if they are in the playoff hunt. If they feel that they have a legit shot at the Grey Cup this year, they may just take the run at it, knowing they could lose their #2 to Ottawa. Imagine if the Bombers were in the hunt (ok, not easily done right now), like we were back in 2007......with one exception, we had a proven back-up qb, who we traded at the deadline for a couple of draft picks. Then we lose our starter in the East Final, and have no experienced backup. The organization would regret that trade for years to come. I suspect that Calgary, Saskatchewan, and Toronto will all want to keep their #2 guys past the trade deadline, as all have Grey Cup aspirations.

I like this move, Miller is a good business guy, with a strong football background. He's passionate, and he's no nonsense.

I was a KG supporter before he left, and I still think that was a mistake back then, but that was several years ago. I don't think that there is much future in KG, and I think that the cost would be too high to bring him in. He is nearing the end of his career, and I don't see a big benefit here. I also believe that too many people put too much on the QB, and overlook the faults of others. Buck was inconsistant last night, no question, but he is not solely responsible for the offensive ills. He personally had a fumble, and threw a pick (off a deflection). The other turnovers couldn't logically be placed on him, and those turnovers killed drives. Our RB's didn't do a good job of picking up the blitz. Matthews didn't have his strongest game either, and dropped catchable footballs. IMHO, I'd stick with Buck, and continue to rotate Goltz in to run some wildcat to continue his development. Virtually every #2 in the league last year got a start at some point in the season, so developing a #2 is critical.

I disagree with your opinion that the BC conference is stronger, but without an interlocking schedule, it is really tough to compare depth after the top. No question that Saskatoon has been dominant, and the club that everyone wants to compare to. Since 1947 (since play resumed after WW2), Saskatoon has 16 championships, Regina 15, Edmonton 8, Hamilton 5, Ottawa 4, nanaimo, Winnipeg, and Windsor have 3 each. Over 6 decades, the PFC teams have won over two-thirds of the time. Calgary finished ahead of Saskatoon in the regular season last year, so I would submit that the talent level in the PFC is not centred on one team. I expect the Rifles under Karhut will do very well, especially with Ryan Marsh back at QB. No question that players leaving is a concern, as the lure of living away from home is a draw for some players, and BC is the biggest lure in the country that way.

Actually the PFC is much stronger than the BC junior league. Pfc teams have won 7 of the last 10 CJFL titles. The BC championships can be best described as the Andrew Harris years. A couple of BC teams do very well recruiting, but they have a bad reputation on fulfilment of promises. What the BC league has is great support from the Lions, and much lower operating costs due to much less travel. The Bison do some recruiting in BC. It is there second biggest source of players, but it is way below the local number. IIRC the Bison had 44 Manitobans on their roster last year, and 11 from BC.

Carter had a solid game, which shows how talented some of the junior players are. Junior is less restrictive than CIS, so he is eligible to practise with the Bombers, and still play Rifles. The Bombers can protect him as a territorial pick, just like the Lions did with Andrew Harris a few years ago. This is a win-win-win for the Bombers, the Rifles, and Carter. Of course if the Bombers want him now, he's signed with them.

I watched him play for the Rifles, and he's a clutch receiver with great hands. It's tough to make the jump from Junior to Pro though. The BC Lions and the Saskatchewan Roughriders both have arrangements with local junior teams that allow a few junior players to play for their junior club, but practice with the main club. It would be fantastic if the Bombers could do this with Carter. (That's how BC protected Andrew Harris, while developing his skills in practice with the main team).
