  1. I think you just won the internet today for the absolute most moronic post. Who is "Devils" offensive too? I suppose VERY religous people might see it. But let's not get silly. Your problem is, you began by supporting the wrong side and if every single human being on earth came to you and said "Nope, Redskins is offensive", you'd still stick to your opinion. You're very closed minded as evidenced by your laughingly shaky points. The problem is you dont utilize common sense, which would tell you that "Devils" is not offensive (and named, not after the bibilcal devil, but the mythical monster or whatever, and yes I know they use a pitchfork in their marketing). If Aboriginal people say Redskins is offensive, I'd tend to take their word for it. The debate actually is not if Redskins is offensive. It is offensive. That is fact. You can argue that just like one can argue that the earth is flat but facts are facts. The debate is whether the offensiveness of the term is enough to force the team to change their name.
  2. I posted about the aborginal magazine called Redskin earlier. I think the idea of using the term is related to the excuse many black people give for using the N-word - to "depower" it or "take it back". It's stupid. A derogatory racist term doesnt need to be taken back. It should be left in the past where it belongs.
  3. I hear the n word on the radio all the time. I guess it's not a bad word. Maybe we should try it. You post the following sentence: "N***** isn't a bad word" on twitter and see what happens. I hear the word "***" on the radio and in every day conversation. It has a "legitimate" meaning in the UK. Guess what, name the team Washington Fags and see what happens. (sorry in advance to mods but I hope they get my point). Id like to know what makes you think Redskins is not a bad word in 2014 when several aboriginal groups are on board with changing the name.
  4. Ah yes, the Mayor dancing at the forks while the real movers and shakers that got the NHL back were at MTSC presser.
  5. The people discussing it are pitching Marchand plus from Boston. I wouldnt mind marchand. Consistant scorer and the type of prick this team needs to fully compete but we'd need more to make that happen. The Jets have two VERY major pieces of talent that will surely be the toast of the draft - question is, will the offers get into crazy territory with the frenzy that could happen and will Chevy/Chipman be willing to pull the trigger?
  6. I believe Philip Wood is also the centre of the "iphone message" theory. A couple of days after the plane went missing, someone claiming to be him sent a message and picture to a message forum (I believe). His message claimed the plane was hijacked by military and he was able to hide his phone on his person. He said the passengers were separated and he was being held. The pic was just complete blackness (he claimed to be blindfolded). The interesting thing is, people who analysed the message said the metadata contains GPS information putting the phone at Diego Garcia. The GPS coordinates were slightly "off" which lends credence to it as anyone faking the message would use the public coordinates from google etc. I think the MS media has ignored the idea of the plane landing at Diego Garcia because on its face its absurd. it means the US hijacked a plane and abducted X amount of people with very bad intentions (no point establishing the theory that the plane crashed if you intended to release the prisoners). I want to believe aliens were involved, but we have to look at the most likely scenario and move outward from there. We've already passed a few "most likely" scenarios since the plane flew for hours, skirted radar detection etc. So we're at two reasonable possibilities: 1) moments after the 'goodnight' message, there was a catastrophic mechanical incident that immediately (or very quickly) incapacitated the crew and passengers but the plane continued to fly on auto pilot and the course corrections and skirting of radar was a coincedence or 2) the plane was "taken" either by the crew or hijackers. A non-crew hijacking seems unlikely. Some will point to the fact this crew was known to be lax about rules, ie. they invited people into the cockpit. But if you plan a hijacking, you cant have it all rest on whether the Captain will leave the flight deck unsecured when he's most likely not going to. That means it was a crew member. That also works when one considered the timing - immediately following the good night message. Thats the idea time to hijack since its not totally uncommon for a flight crew to "forget" or otherwise be late in contacting the next air traffic control station. It would allow X amount of "missing time" before anyone would suspect the plane was missing. This is also somewhat the reason why the plane *could* fly without any of the numerous countries or military stations confronting it - if the plane was flown close enough to borders where country X assumed it was a passenger jet from a neighbouring country that was flying just a bit offcourse. Everyone would think it was the other countries Jet and not worry about it. Thats also why I think there is some info being kept from us. If you're a country that is being asked to provide your military defense radar information and explain how/why an uncommunicative jet flew through your air space, you might prefer to say "nope, never came this way" rather than "ooops, we allowed an invasion of our airspace without doing anything about it". I still sunscribe to the mundane - mechanical failure creating a ghost ship scenario and it flew on until it crashed. There likely is a debris field but just not anywhere they've been looking. The fact they now say the search area is not accurate...blows my mind. I know nothing and I had a hard time swallowing this search area. The "pings" made no sense. At the time I said to a co-worker - it makes no sense. You pick up a couple of pings, 200 miles apart, the pings come and go, disappear, reappear and then fade away forever? Makes no sense whatsoever.
  7. Big development today as they admit the pings that "guaranteed" the plane was where they were searching turns out not to have been the black boxes after all. What a **** show While it's possible the plane is lost in the Indian Ocean I just have a feeling they are way off base. I love a good conspiracy story but I generally don't "go there". The problem with conspiracies that suggest the big bad US did it is, we have to believe they orchestrate these elaborate plots but then get found out by some guy in a tin foil hat in his moms basement because they miss something simple For example the invasion of Iraq. The US orchestrates this thing, falsifies evidence of WMD's and then finds nothing. If they were making it all up surely they'd plant some weapons. Therefor I find it difficult to believe the US abducted this plane. It's just a very brazen way to kidnap some weapons designers who already worked for a US company. I do believe the data that suggests the plane flew for six plus hours. I doubt how accurate they are as far as pin pointing it's location. It's certainly curious that the plane seemed to skirt air traffic control zones. That's a huge coincidence if it wasn't being intelligently piloted. What bugs me is the fact they have to stop and figure out who's going to pay for the continued search. This is the greatest aviation mystery in the history of manned flight. I don't care what it costs.
  8. Nope. Katz was adamant the NHL was not returning to Winnipeg because he didn't know anything about it. I won't argue with what you remember hearing but I know what I heard and saw. Katz was more positive about the NHL returning before he was mayor. I saw an interview on a local sports show where he said he's be in on any effort to bring the NHL back. The truth is Katz might be wealthy but he's not anywhere close to Chipman. In fact true north wasn't happy about Katz loose lips during negotiations either. Katz poured cold water all over it at a time true north was actively negotiating with the league. That is fact. I didn't see Sammy at the presser. Did you?
  9. Our good friend Eklund says sources tell him Chicago, Boston, Buffalo are preparing offers for Kane. So what so we want from each to make a deal?
  10. You either don't believe government should give anything to private business or you do. I'm fine with reasonable investment. Most of what the jets get back are revenue streams that exist or are increased due to the jets. So it's not exactly like kids going hungry in the street so we can watch hockey. Katz is just a d bag who isn't part of the inner circle of the true big wigs in town and it drives him crazy. I remember him proclaiming he NHL would never return because if it could he'd know about it and no one talked to him. Meanwhile Chipman was working behind the scenes with the NHL and province. They cut Katz out.
  11. I think the answer is a mix of common sense (we all know the N-word is racist even though it's used often) and taking into consideration input from the people impacted. In the case of the Redskins, as someone else pointed out, the word has no other meaning other than as a derogatory remark. Even going back a few hundred years, its usuage at its best was to refer to different ethinicites (ie. white skins and red skins). And there are several Native American groups opposed to the name. I pointed out the magazine to be fair since no one else had but to be honest I am disappointed they chose that name. But what can you do. Someone on their blog compared it to black people using the N word..."taking it back". Why take back a racial slur? Indians logo *is* offensive, I agree. Im not sure the name is... but the logo is offensive.
  12. Lawless told a story of Troz admitting that fact. He's not a D coach, he's a coach who implemented the system that worked best for the players he had. Having said that however, he's going to want a fully responsible team. Will OV work within that system? Will he sacrifice a few personal stats for team defence? And if he wont, is ownership, management and coaching truly onside as they claim and willing to move him? Personally, I think trading Ovechkin might be the one thing that makes the Caps a cup contender.
  13. If Mark Cohon being there is pushing this negotiation towards a conclusion, then good on the Commish.
  14. Yeah maybe some coaches would leave their info on a table where DW and his receivers could "come across" it, Walters leaves IGF unlocked (whoops, forgot) and these practices commence. I would guess the difference would be that it would be "off-season" time so if they got hurt, they are SOL.
  15. This isnt about the Bombers not wanting to pay for it or the city not wanting to pay for it. The city wants a reduction in the charter price. Thats reasonable since a) its a 'public asset' they buy in bulk c) it serves the interests of transit to get more people on busses and out of cars d) it serves the interests of the city since it's the city that will suffer the traffic woes.
  16. Do the players not work out, run around, play ball in the off-season? No difference.
  17. The Riders are going to be awash in cash once they open that new building.
  18. Maybe Walters will accidently leave the door to IGF unlocked on the days DW needs a facility for unofficial practices.
  19. People really have no idea how slimy Sam is. Well, people *do* but it goes very deep. I was told (and Im sure this is verifiable) that he owned (or was otherwise involved in ownership) the bathouse that burned down a few years ago where someone died. Look at the Riverside Park Management fiasco and how he got away with not paying property taxes for years. Or how he was Mayor and Owner of RPM during a financial dispute. Shady shady shady. And this is totally up his ally. I for one commend the BOD for having the guts to stand up to Sammy because, if what I was told is true, some people who have stood up to him get paid a visit from his ahem friends.
  20. Charge $1.50 per ticket for "Public Transportation Initiative". 30,000 people X 10 events = $450,000/year. The Bombers eat the rest. Then everyone shares the cost whether you use transit or ride your bike or drive your car. But yes, if the Bombers made a deal with Transit and Transit approves of said deal, who in the blue **** is Sam Katz to over-rule it?
  21. Thats a funny way to minimize the issue. But if dropping the charters and relying on regular transit service to service the games, then it wont be funny to a whole lot of people namely, IGF patrons, IGF staff, residents of South Winnipeg and all routes feeding into the south, anyone requiring emergency services during these times, etc etc
  22. There is no indication that the BOD rejected Rabb for anything other than their stated reasons which were very reasonable. The BOD made three suggestions to Sammy about city appointed members. Sammy rejected their three suggestions and countered with one name. Who's being reasonable. If Sammy didnt like the BOD names, he could have submitted his own list. Lawless admitted that Rabb, while being a passionate Bombers fan, is extremely outspoken and ruffles feathers. Im not sure that "passionate Bombers fan" should be the leading prerequisite to sitting on the BOD. I want qualified people that have the best interests of the business at heart. Remember, Asper himself got in trouble for being too passionate a fan. A lot of people turned on Asper after he was unable to build the Stadium but he was well liked by many before then. I just dont get this "old boys club" schtick that people apply to the BOD. If the BOD felt it was inapproproate for a non-city staffer to hold the city's position on the BOD, so be it. If they personally didnt like Rabb to the extent that he would have been difficult to work with, that is not an insigificant consideration either.
  23. To be fair, I stumbled across a magazine devoted to Aboriginal issues (well it seems to proudly "showcase Aboriginal women in their semi-nude glory") called Redskin Magazine.
  24. Exactly. Transit might argue that they have increased costs due to OT for the operators. But factoring in everything, I dont think its an unrealistic ask by the Bombers (especially since, it seems, it wasnt an ask at all, it was offered by the city until Sammy got his panties in a bunch).
  25. There was always something fishy about the Riverside Park arrangement. Katz formed the company to act as a non-profit lease holder for Shaw Park and parking lots it leased from the city for $1, then in turn sublet to the Goldeyes, which Katz owned. Money seemed to go back and forth between the two entities. Riverside was supposed to pay property tax on the parking lots but mysteriously were left off for a few years. Katz promised to put the Goldeyes in a blind trust when he ran for Mayor and then when he won he broke the promise saying essentially "oh well".
