As I recall, Cap had to return the stones to right the time line. Banner was shown that removing a stone created an off shoot time line. Only returning the stones at the moment they were taken would right the time line Which is also why, I assume, Cap could stay and grow old in the correct timeline. Once he returned the stones, there was only one timeline.
