Yes, Muzzin would have been very good. Didnt get him. Lemiuex is cost-certainty for years. But the Jets have other players like that. If (big if) Hayes signs with Jets, then this deal was an absolute no-brainer. If they make it to Cup final and hayes leaves, it's still an easy trade to make. This happens every year. You dont trade valuable pieces when you're a contender just because they're UFA's. if Myers played for someone else and the Jets traded for him as a rental, we'd all think it was a great move. if they lose him for nothing in the off-season, its like losing a rental that cost nothing. The plan today is to make the team better, not worse.

I agree that Little has been very good this year and the fact the Jets's main target was Stone indicates they were comfortable with Little. With Stone out of the running, Hayes becomes a great Plan B. He can play wing too so maybe Little stays at 2C. Though I doubt it because Hayes is better than Little but I dont think a center was as needed as last season. I think what Hayes does is what the Jets wanted...big body, drives the play, solid D. Whereas last year it was probably more singularly offensive. If they re-sign Hayes it could make Little expendable. But Little can also play wing. We certainly got better down the middle today and perhaps more importantly, the center depth is very strong now, the PP is stronger, team D is stronger.

Yeah very true. I'd assume they'd at least have a conversation but they'll be competing with every other team that can afford him (which the Jets really can't). If Hayes does well, I can see Jets wanting to lock him up. Fill a big hole for years to come.

I guess he's not an "agitator" per se. I like Lemieux but if his ceiling is a 3rd/4th line guy, its the price of doing business. Too early to say this but if Jets can re-sign Hayes, they've filled a hole for years to come.

The conditional pick is a 4th round if we win the cup so thats an easy throw in. 1st round pick means we're out of the Stone sweepstakes and its a lot...or is it? Would hopefully be a low first rounder assuming Jets have success in the playoffs. Lemiuex, I like, but first guy they pulled when Ehlers came back and to me, we have depth in that 4th line/Moose role. He can be replaced. Interesting that both he and Armia, pieces of the Kane trade, are now gone.

Hayes is 6'5, 220lbs. 26 years old. Makes $5.175 million and will be UFA this summer.

Part of me is surprised they traded Lemiuex as they seemed to like him but since he came out when Ehlers returned, makes sense. Didnt give up much.
