  1. The "old" debate is interesting. You have some people that are dismissive of "old actors" but I honestly think its a matter of those people not really thinking for themselves and getting caught up in whatever hype there is against the originals. Same thing is happening with Star Trek and the announcement that here is a role for Shatner. There are probably legitimate arguments against using him but his age isn't one of them. Logan - very true. The prequels were a mess. Let's not Discount the influence of Kasdan on the franchise who wrote Empire. Also Lucas' wide edited the originals and some people believe she was absolutely critical to the success of those films and was sorely missed on the prequels.
  2. Agreed. I sort of assume they come back with Pavs next week but really how can they? Hutch just put himself into the conversation for any start. Would love to hear the MTSC crowd respond to him if he starts next game.
  3. Nope, no goalie controversy here.
  4. Although it's off topic this is very interesting discussion.
  5. But I mean, 4-6 weren't so great in that regard either. Luke Skywalker was just about the lamest character you can imagine. Man I want to watch Star Wars now. Well to an extent. They were simplistic. The acting was mostly good. Alec Guiness brought class and gravitas to the film. I think with the other three Lucas was just as bad a writer but thought he was better and wrote a more complex story. Thus they really sucked. He also didn't know how to make Anakin sympathetic and show his fall. I've been tempted to watch all six since I've been reading spoilers and speculation. Some I rumours I was not holy about but it seems to be coming into focus a bit better.
  6. The entire plot of the Episode I-III was laughbly bad. Some good effects, occasionally good performances (Palpatine) and nostalgia was all that was good about them.
  7. Basically it just shows that you can't make that leap... 10% of the general population being gay has no bearing whatsoever on the percentage of gay athletes. What is the percentage of black people in the USA vs. the percentage of black people in the NBA? Doesn't correlate very closely does it? Or the percentage of black people in the NHL for that matter. I was actually going to make that exact same point! Although it brings up an interesting point, what is the percentage of gay people per ethnic demo? Does it maintain a constant through all ethnicities, subject only to cultural influences ofcourse? Stats I've seen is yes, though its always subject to self declaration. Basically impossible to say. There is also the belief that everyone is gay.

  9. Except the ending of both was awful. "I've got the higher ground"/"Into exile I must go" were two very good example of how bad a writer Lucas is. Yes you're right, closely followed up by "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" Oh God, dont remind me. Just dreadful. Lucas is a lousy, lousy writer. I know he came to resent the backlash but what did he expect?
  10. I only lasted about two weeks in my Stats class at U of M. But I think just common sense tells us that the percentage of anyone in the general populace might be different from the percentage in a specialized demographic, like athletics. But I could be completely wrong. Seems like a moot point regardless.
  11. Lets revisit this issue after the game. I either get to gloat or goat.

  13. Did you miss the uni-ball robot? I was going to mention that too. Looks lame. Maybe there is a greater purpose to it but looks designed to sell toys. You make a good point about trained Jedi though. In A New Hope, it was a quest of a rag tag bunch of people with little fighting skill. We had the one very tame "fight" between Vader and OB1 but nothing like Episodes I-III. I'd highly suspect they will have some sweet Jedi action but I doubt it will involve Luke...if what I hear is correct though, there might be an exciting action scene for him at the end.
  14. to this: at all. How are you connecting these dots? Why are you connecting these dots? Hutchinson is getting the start in Boston for the same reason Montoya got a start in Chicago last year - it's a place that has special meaning for him and the hope is that he will elevate his game because of it. It's a pretty common theory NHL coaches subscribe to when picking a starting goalie, although it doesn't come up very often. If Martin Brodeur signs with someone and New Jersey is on the schedule, you bet your pretty hiney he's getting the start that game. Except Maurice said it had nothing to do with him being a former Boston draft pick. Try again. Uh, okay. ? Gouda. ? Maurice didn't want to give that as a reason. Fine, I'm sure he has his reasons for it. I'm not going to dedicate any amount of worry as to what they might be. The above leap you made doesn't have any logic to it, or really anything at all to base it on. What leap? No leap whatsoever was made. Like what is with some posters who take part if a thread but cant discuss the content and have to resort to whining about the posters'? The media is already trying to create a goalie controversy here. If Hutch craps the bed tonight, it quiets down the media's desire for Hutch to start more (and the fans, many of whom still see Pavs as not a bonafide starter). If Hutch plays lights out, you dont think there's a controversy? Maybe not in the Jets' locker room, but certainly within the media and among many fans. I mean really, thats pretty obvious. Leap....lol

Except Maurice said it had nothing to do with him being a former Boston draft pick. Try again. Mbrg is right though, you sure take giant leaps to connect dots with a lot of your theories. I don't really buy into what Maurice is saying and I don't think the expectation should be that he's going to be honest when the question is essentially "did Hutch earn this start or is it the sentimental stuff" ... of course Maurice isn't going to say anything other than he earned it. Not a leap at all. The leap is in saying Hutch is starting for the exact opposite reason the Head Coach stated. You could be right, but why is that more reasonable than any other theory? Not to mention, I have no theory. CLEARLY, the talk this week in the local media has been goaltending. My remarks were more to the media craze and the seemingly desire to create a controversy. If Hutch plays lights out tonight, you dont think the media is going to be talking up who should be starting next week? Ofcourse they will. Hence, my point was spot on.
  16. Change is good, but change for the sake of change is not always good. And unfortunately for you, all the old actors WILL be in this movie in case you didn't know. Luke, Han, Leia, Chewy, etc... will be in this. What they're trying to do is tie in the old with the new, which I think is a great way to keep it going. I know they will be in it, but I'd hate for them to be the main characters, and I really don't think they will be the focus. It's not unusual to me to not see them appearing in a teaser trailer, in fact I'm glad because that tells me they will be secondary characters rather than Luke and Han vs the universe part 2. Hmmm well, Ive heard it described as Ford's movie and he's supposedly the star of the first one. I think, from spoilers and speculation I've read that Luke wont show up til the end and will have a larger role in the second one. Im fine with them having big roles. Just because they are older actors doesnt mean they arent good. Will be interesting to see if they deviate from the idea that the saga is about the Skywalkers if if Luke and his family still play central roles.
  17. Ray Rice wins appeal and is reinstated. Ridiculous but blame the NFL for this one. Will be interesting to see which team gives in and signs him.

  19. It wouldnt surprise me if the percentage of gay athletes is less than the percentage of gay people in the general population. Athletics at that level is a specialised thing. But regardless, it doesnt really matter. Surely there are a lot more gay athletes than we know.
  20. I think the local media is dying for a controversy.
  21. I really hates that Falcon shot. Its getting a lot of love online but to me its the opposite of what JJ promised - he said they were going to tone down the CGI and the trailer features a goofy CGI action shot of the Falcon. I would have preferred a more majestic shot of it rather then spinning all unnaturally. There are some story curiosities like Storm Troopers existing 30 years after the fall of the Empire but cant really be critical until the entire story unfolds. I thought it was silly to not feature anything that grounds the new film with the origionals. Even showing the image of Vader burning or the droids would have been better. immediately showing "young" actors in very uncompelling shots makes it seem a lot more like Episode 1 than Episode IV.
  22. It also wouldnt be as big a story if homophobe players didnt open their mouths about it. It all feeds into it.
  23. I read an article a few months ago where the writers admitted they wrote themselves into a corner from day one. They seemed to be amused at it actually. I found it very unprofessional. And I think they had the end date confirmed with about three seasons left so they had plenty of time to plot out a satisfying conclusion. I seem to be in the minority that I really liked the finale and felt it was highly emotional. But most of the plot developments in the middle of the series were just awful. Agreed. First couple of seasons were really good. The middle seemed to have have no direction (like the show was "Lost"). I also liked the ending, though it really wasn't that much of a surprise for me by that time. Would have been a much better show if it was 4 seasons of 6. A show like that relies combines the compelling stories (and flash backs) of the cast with suspense, cliff hangers and surprise to keep the audience guessing and coming back each week. Can only do that for so long, especially with the flash backs. I was lucky in that I never watched it when it first ran. I binge watched it on Netflix. There is no way I would have stuck with it or been able to make sense of it if I watched it when it ran. I find Bad Robot's fingerprints on Star Trek and Super 8, Cloverfield etc all the same. Compelling ideas but just poor writing. STID especially was something that, had you read the script online you'd think it was good, albeit convoluted fan fiction. And then they actually made it. Ugh. I hope Star Wars doesnt fall into that trap. I have faith in Kennedy.
