Winnipeg Mayoral Election
The Unknown Poster replied to The Unknown Poster's topic in General Discussion
I like it too. It gives me a good reason to not have to go to Winnipeg to shop for anything with my wife I'm sure businesses in Steinbach, Selkirk, and Portage are in favor of it as well. It would only happen province-wide. Well I'm pretty sure the mayor of Winnipeg doesn't have the power to instituate a provincial sales tax. Also, we already have one of those that was recently raised. But seriously, am I misinformed on what a city sales tax would be, and why people think it would be a good idea? How is it different than the PST, which everyone is still mad about the NDPs raising? Correct, the Mayor does not have the power but he would ask the province to institute it. But it would be a tax that was collected province-wide, administered by the province but the money collected would go directly to the city's, towns, etc that it was collected in. The reason it would only happen province wide is for the reason mentioned - if it was only Winnipeg, people would shop outside the city. Plus, other cities and towns would benefit too. Bowman's idea was to eliminate residential property taxes and charge a 3% or 4% sales tax. For people like me, I'd spend less per year in taxes. The criticism is that it would impact low income people the most. But mechanisms would be built in to account for that. Its a fairer way to collect taxes. Right now, the burden is on homeowners to pay for many services everyone uses. I would be pretty annoyed if I had to start paying an extra sales tax in Steinbach because the idiots in Winnipeg can't run their city properly. We're doing fine here. Unless all the money would go to a new arena of course. Why would you be annoyed? You wouldnt pay property tax either. And your community would reap the rewards. Its like the tax cuts announced today. I *get* what the opposition are saying but tax cuts that benefit families are good. I dont care if they *only* benefit middle class families and dont benefit the single parents out there. You cant please everyone. I'd prefer they cut my income tax significantly. One day I hope they will. But good on the Cons for keeping their promises to cut tax. And LOL to the opposition for declaring that they will reverse tax cuts. -
You missed the point of Melissa's post. She is explaining why everyone "knew" but didn't say anything. And I personally think she did a great job of getting her point across. Also keep in mind that she is very active in this subject matter, having been a victim of domestic abuse herself. That is, if we are speaking about the same post. I am referring to her blog: http://www.nothinginwinnipeg.com/2014/10/do-you-know-about-jian/ I understood her point. I just dont feel very good about someone after the fact getting pub from "oh I knew". I totally accept why many victims dont come forward. We can understand it. We can accept it. We can try to change it and we should. But ultimately, when someone says "Well I would have come forward but I thought it would go nowhere or I'd be harrassed" then the answer is, well, you cant really complain then. I was involved in a very serious situation a few years ago involving a very well known criminal organization. There was a lot of violence and death threats and it came down to a question of whether we testify or not. Sometimes you cant just leave it to the next person. I know thats not always fair. It just seems like a lot of media people are tripping over themselves to say "hey I knew! I knew!" Almost like they want their 15 minutes being connected to a major news story. Doesnt feel right.

The way it was said and where it was said makes it a more off the record remark. Im sure media get information all the time that they cant run with. But it would certainly have sparked a lot further questioning and investigation by any reasonably qualified reporter. -
Very interesting case with multiple issues. Its been interesting watching the public opinion turn. The issue of whether an employer can fire an employee over accusations that do not involve the police is an intriguing one. I would say for sure they can. This issue arose in the NFL recently too when people asked why a player would be suspended when charged but not convicted. Many employers have so-called morality clauses. In the case of something like Jian, normally it would be a suspension pending an internal investigation especially in a unionized workplace like the CBC. Clearly, the information the CBC had was enough for them to decide they no longer wanted to be in the Jian business. And the information that has since come out would seem to indicate that was the correct decision. One thing that bothers me though, is the amount of people coming out of the woodwork to say they knew. I wont blame a victim for not coming forward but to a degree I question it. I thought there a stronger sense of sisterhood that would have resulted in victims going to the police to prevent this from happening again. I realise its a difficult position to be put in especially when you see how Jian has managed to frame his accusers as jilted ex-lovers looking for revenge and the online harrasment they have endured. But there was an article in the Free Press by, I think Melissa Martin and it just rubbed me the wrong way. It stank of opportunism. She had a passing and tenuous connection to Jian but decided to get in on the media gravy train. Just didnt sit right with me.

Heenan & Holmes won't re-sign before free agency

I think he said he *should* sign him. Which of course is true. -

Remember when lawless said this weeks ago and a bunch of you went on about how lawless was just making stuff up? Because he's fat I guess. -

If its what I think, I think its confusing two issues. I know Bogo exchanged words with some drunk losers at a bar during the lock out. But the "punch" I heard was two other players...which I think have to remain nameless. Either way, I've heard lots of really good things about Bogo. I honestly chalk his poor season last year up to playing off-side and mentoring Trouba. he improved when he went back to the right side. Buff going back to D would eat up 30 plus minutes. I wonder if Trouba would be okay playing the left side. Go Enstrom-Buff, Trouba-Bogo, Stuart, Postma -

Many people would be correct. Such richness coming from these clowns. They trip over each other to distance themselves from the PST hike now but where were they a year ago? More to the point why did they continue to support these NDP budgets that put the province in the position of "needing" a tax hike. And why didnt they come out sooner and accuse Selinger of lying? And he absolutely lied. He campaigned on no tax increase. He deserves what he gets. These things can go either way. A party in peril changes leaders and just keeps going under. One can hope. -

I think it works both ways. Someone who got a job sweeping floors when they were 14 and worked their way through live and various jobs and careers and then enters politics isnt a guarantee to be a great leader or do whats best for the working class. And someone like Judy could have a really great understanding of the common person. But in Judy's specific case, she actually does seem out of touch and she does seem like someone serving her political masters and collecting pensions. Everytime she claimed to love Winnipeg and wanted to make Winnipeg better, I didnt believe her. Not one bit. Now personally, the PST hike hasnt impacted me one iota. But her dismissal of it was glaring. And now you see part of the fall-out where the long knives are out in the NDP party. MLA's are tripping over each other to distance themselves from Selinger and the PST. As far as taxes go, I would have been fine if the feds and never reduced the GST either. To me it's a significant revenue generator that is spread out so much that it's a small price to pay for a large benefit. I'd much rather have significant income tax reductions. Thats why I am open to Bowman's City Sales Tax idea. I'd save money by not paying a Property Tax and paying 3% sales tax. Really, they should get rid of income tax altogether at both levels of government and rely on sales, user and sin taxes. -

^^^^ While that is true, there are far too many people harping on pavs. If the difference in the game is Pavs sucked, then so be it. That hasnt happened yet this season. There has been long stretches where he was hung out to dry. Everyone expect him to be at peak performance every night...what about Andrew Ladd who finally had a good game. What about Buff who shows up about half the time? What about our D that is collectively awful? And speaking of D, Bogo is hurt again. Im not one of the people who screamed to move Buff off D who is now screaming to move him back, but it might become a real need. Bogo just doesnt seem suited be a top pairing D-man. The problem is, when he played with Trouba last season ie strugged on his off win. I'd consider going with Enstrom-Trouba but then you leave Bogo with Stuart. Why arent we in on Tyler Myres, the giant D-man from Buffalo? I will say this about Chevy - if the plan is solely to draft well, develop prospects and then watch them come together as a competitive team, then so be it. Im fine with that. But then trade out upper-aged players for more prospects and picks. Whats the point of having a team that is competitive five years from now and either guys like Buff and Ladd are too old to be real forces for us or have long since walked away for nothing? If you want to shake this team up, get the best possible deal for the two buddies, Buff & Ladd, either separately or together and hand this team to Wheeler, Sheif and Trouba. -

There hasn't been a single lost game yet this season where the Jets could have won had Pavs been anything short of brilliant. -

Pavs is off to a slow start sure. How much of that is him and how much of that is the entire team has sucked so far this year. The way they played Colorado is how they have to play. And look, pavs was very good. -

The off-air clip I think was more her attitude then her comments. She was even more angry and evasive and aggressive then when she knew the mic was on. -

Well we are seeing this team without Kane and it's not good. He could be the catalyst for change one way or another. I'm almost at the point where I think they need to move Ladd and Buff and embrace the idea of the new core. -

I believe Judy has never held a job outside politics. I thought the Falcon as CAO was possible too but he's being pursued by federal and provincial parties right now. -
Jets should tank this season
The Unknown Poster replied to gbill2004's topic in Winnipeg Jets Discussion
It puts pressure on chevy. I don't believe for one second that chevy and Chipman want the team to lose for a draft pick. So the heat will build quickly because the last thing you want is to be in the bottom three, make some moves and end up just good enough to miss the playoffs and get a lousy pick. They will have to do something soon if they want to get a playoff spot. -
Shooting on Parliament Hill
The Unknown Poster replied to The Unknown Poster's topic in General Discussion
Well media is going to use gripping headlines. Certainly the comparison to 9/11 is overblown. But the fact it turned out to be a lone shooter who cowardly killed a soldier from behind and was then killed doesn't change the circumstances at the time of the report It seemed a lot more serious. And it could have been a lot more serious. If this guy got into the caucus room and murdered MP's maybe even the PM, would that particular headline be more accurate? Fact is it was an attack on Canada as it was an attack on our seat of government. And I don't think we should under play as Canadians often do. Read tonight that ISIS is urging their followers to continue to attack people in Canada. We're in this thing now even if people didn't want to believe it before. -

Pavs might not be the solution but he isn't the problem. This team has no heart, no fight and no confidence. This is the type of play that gets Coaches fired (and did). Chevy has two options. Write off the season and hope we get a top three pick. Or make a major trade. -
The only way Ladd loses the "C" is a trade. It would be a worse move to strip him.

I think her attitude might have swayed some undecided. I think her remark about the PST increase not affecting winnipeggers was bad too. But I don't think her support collapsed in the last three days. Maybe with the undecided. But once Steeves self destructed and it became a two horse race Judy's lack of substance and her politics as usual demeanour versus Bowman's sense of fresh vision youth and energy that did it.
