  1. Same old losers. These ones use archaic fundamentalism to justify their thirst for power and violence. It will probably require ground troops to beat them back but ultimately it will take moderates of the same religion to snuff out the crazies.
  2. Our Foreign Minister doesn't seem to think the killer was associated with ISIS/ISIL. "Foreign Minister John Baird told the BBC gunman Michael Zehaf-Bibeau was "certainly radicalised", but was not on a list of high-risk individuals. Mr Baird told the BBC there were no substantiated claims yet that Zehaf-Bibeau was associated with Islamic State." http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-29752077 I reiterate that people here on Canadian soil have more to fear from domestic terrorism than they do from foreign terrorism. Correct. The shooter does not appear to be apart of an organized attack but does appear to be influenced by the beliefs. Remember, part of ISIS' MO is to encourage the "lone nuts" to attack within our countries. So the connection is there.
  3. Steeves tried to paint Bowman as "more left than Judy". Even Judy tried to paint him as that. The anti-Bowman idiots online tried to insinuate (or out and out accuse him) that he was being bought off by big business. Judy tried to deflect her NDP ties being a negative by accusing Bowman of having conservative ties. It was actually one of the more laughable moments of the CJOB debate. You could tell Judy had pre-scripted talking points, this being one of them. But Bowman beat her to the punch by expressing how proud he was to have the support of former Premier Filmon. Moments later she tried to accuse him of hiding his connections to people like Filmon. Bowman actually discussed concrete things he intended to do. When his support rose, he revealed he had a "first 100 days plan". He openly disagreed with the PST hike but demanded Winnipeg's fair share. He admitted he'd raise property taxes but only as much as needed (aprox 2%). He promised to lower the Mayor's salary which really contrasted with Katz who's a millionaire taking a $88,000 severence and judy who argued that they deserved their severence. The only time I thought he made a mistake was the city sales tax idea. It was ballsy and fresh to suggest something like that, which certainly has merit. But I knew his opponents would twist it. Steeves tried to by openly saying Bowman would create a sales tax AND raise property taxes which was a lie. But by the time Steeves went on the offensive, he was finished in the race anyway. I think Bowman conveyed the message that while he wanted Winnipeg to build big projects that would cost a lot of money, he wanted us to do so in a fiscally responsible way. I dont think Judy's NDP ties allowed people to take her seriously. I think people say "Judy wants to build more BRT and will raise our taxes to do it" but also say "Bowman wants to build more BRT but will find a way to do it without drastically raising our taxes". People trusted Bowman and respected the way he ran his campaign. They didnt trust or respect Judy. I could be wrong but I didnt hear Judy thank her opponents and she didnt go to Bowman's election night party whereas Steeves and The Falcon both did. Tells you a lot about the character of these people. Steeves, in fact, (who I dont like) did exactly what any well-meaning public servent in his position should have done - he basically endorsed the new Mayor during his consession speech. Very classy move on his part.
  4. Eberle is mentioned quite often as the guy the Oilers might trade to get better. They will likely have to trade one of their "untouchables" at some point. I do think Buff will be traded at some point. Even if he was a consistently good player, which he isnt, it just doesnt make sense to carry his salary at this stage of the Jets' development unless they think the team will contend within 3-4 years and having the old man on the team would be a "feel good" story. The laws of diminishing returns applies to Buff and I think there is an opportunity to soak a team of some good assets at the deadline. Andrew Ladd is my surprise prediction though I dont actually think he'll be traded. He's falling into the Buff category as a player who too often seems disinterested. The fact he's the Captain isnt good when that happens. People talk about the Atlanta core and breaking them up but you're starting to see a change in that group. Wheeler, Little, Kane give 100% virtually every game. Buff & Ladd disappear too often. I wonder if its a coincedence that those two are very close friends also and what it would do to the dynamic to trade one of them.
  5. Just started watching the new HBO (is it HBO?) series, The Affair. Seems somewhat interesting so far with a good cast (including Joshua Jackson). I generally cant stand Reality TV. Survivor was my only one and I think i enjoyed it more because it was a competition so the "set ups" were built into the show. Reality TV is just scripted garbage with non-actors. For dramas: The Blacklist (every so often I think the show is going to take a turn for the worse and it doesnt...very good show) Dallas (sad to hear it was cancelled especially on a cliffhangar, though there is a movement afoot to save the show - while the show wasnt great, it was a guilty plesure but was never the same once Larry Hagman died) SVU - still hanging on to this one even though they routinely get rid of the best characters. Masters of Sex is really good too. Good cast and I love period shows. And ofcourse, BOARDWALK EMPIRE with one episode remaining in the series! I have Gotham recorded but havent watched it yet. Heard good things. Comedies: Modern Family is still pretty good. Goldbergs is hilarious. And aside from Jets/Bombers games, I love Dateline.
  6. Not the best but far from the worst. I was reading the books before the series came out and agree the TV series was better. I kept reading because I'd gotten to the point where I had invested too much time reading them that I wanted to know how the series ended. Then the book series ended and it was appalling. I will admit I haven't had the stomach to read the final book and am basing my opinion on the spoilers and subsequent discussions by people who had. She pulled a bait and switch - after having Sookie with Eric for about 10 books, Eric gets sent to be the consort (ie powerless sex slave) to a Queen of another state, Bill becomes King of Louisiana (which she admits was a wink wink to the TV series) and Sookie ends up with boring Sam. The Farmers guy was J.K. Simmons. He played Dr. Skoda on Law & Order at the same time he was playing Vern Schillinger on Oz. I actually assumed Sookie would end up with Sam. When a series like that ends, you can never please everyone. I wont spoil it for anyone who hasnt seen the True Blood finale but i thought it was pretty good over-all. I never did finish the first season of Oz. I found it just "ok". Im not sure why. I think it's very obviously an older series compared to todays slock production and I find the narrative of the one prisoner doing the intros etc a bit off-putting. Maybe it's the cast I dont like either. JK Simmons is always great ofcourse but Im not feeling the prison cast (other than that guy from the first season of SVU, always liked him).
  7. I was introduced to True Blood via the TV show. Then I tried to read the books. Awful. You really get the sense that Sookie is just the author living vicariously. Terrible terrible.
  8. Good point. Bogo for eberly works for me.
  9. How about Enstrom for Eberle?
  10. Well as it turns out it does appear to be related to Islamic terrorism. Also this: “@CTVNorma: CTV News has confirmed mother of suspected shooter is Susan Bibeau, Deputy Commissioner of Immigration and Refugee Canada.”
  11. Wow. Shocking numbers. Historic collapse by Judy who was utterly rejected by voters tonight. Gord Steeves gives a classy speech and announces retirement from politics. He really had limited options. He had the chance to drop out gracefully and missed the opportunity. Ended his political career due.
  12. If the shooter did this due to islamic radicalization, then it's not a sterotype to say it was due to radical islam. ofcourse you will always have the crazy people who are racists against others whether they be Middle Eastern, Indian, Black, White, etc. But there *does* exist a declared war by radical Islam against the western world. As for today, reports are the gunman *looks aborigional*. Other reports have him carrying a flag with Abrabic writing on it. Speculation is flying fast and furious certainly. Given the attacks in Quebec, the reasonable thought would go towards terrorism but ofcourse it could be a lone nut. Parliament Sgt-at-Arms Kevin Vickers is emerging as a hero, apparently killing the gunman as he approached the caucus chambers and then went back to his office to reload.
  13. Its one of the silly anti-Bowman sentiments. I've seen people criticise him for not releasing donation amounts even though he released his donor list. When I pointed out Steeves refuses to do either the defense was 'well he will when he has to and Bowman is worse for releasing only half his lift than none at all'. I've seen people accuse Bowman of wanting P&M open to pedestrians because he works in the area, as if no one else in Winnipeg wants it open. i've heard him accused of taking a bribe from Mark Chipman to finance MTSC expansion just because Chipman endorsed him. The anti-Bowman crowd is truly bizarre. Lets hope he pulls out the upset.
  14. What an awful sentiment. Who cares the colour of skin involved? It's the ideology. Obviously much to soon to speculate but people will speculate when the attack was on a soldier. Especially after the attack a few days ago. You never want to politicize something like this but I admit to thinking on the many stupid things Trudeau has said.
  15. http://www.ctvnews.ca/mobile/canada/gunman-killed-in-ottawa-3-shootings-confirmed-1.2065443 A gunman has been killed in Ottawa after three separate shootings in the nation's capital that saw Parliament Hill locked down and gripped the city with fear. Authorities confirmed shots had been fired inside Parliament, at the National War Memorial and near the Rideau Centre shopping mall. At least two people are reportedly injured. WATCH LIVE NOW: CTV News Special Coverage of Parliament Hill shooting WATCH LIVE NOW: View from the scene as it happens in Ottawa Meanwhile, sources have confirmed to CTV News that a gunman has been killed. Ottawa police will not confirm if the three shootings are the work of a lone gunman. Earlier Wednesday, a solider was shot at the War Memorial and a security guard was wounded at Parliament Hill, which remains under lockdown. Video captured inside Parliament showed officers filing down the empty halls of the Hall of Honour as at least a dozen shots can be heard ringing out in the background. Jason MacDonald, director of communications for Prime Minister Stephen Harper, tweeted that Harper is safe and has left the area. The RCMP is advising people to stay away from the area, and people in downtown Ottawa to stay away from windows and off of roofs. Several MPs also took to Twitter to say that they were safe. Several described what they had heard, and many said they were in hiding. MP Tony Clement tweeted that at least 30 shots were heard from inside the building, close to where the Conservatives and the Liberals hold their weekly caucus meetings. Police confirmed that they received a call about shots being fired just before 10 a.m. on Wednesday morning. They said a man believed to be a member of the Canadian Forces was shot at the National War Memorial. Witnesses at the memorial told CTV News' Katie Simpson that they saw a man with long hair carrying a rifle and heard four shots fired. One witness told her that he saw the man with the rifle then run towards Parliament Hill. The shooting comes two days after a man attacked two Canadian soldiers in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que. One of those soldiers died from his injuries. The suspect was shot and killed by police. On Tuesday, Canada raised the domestic terror threat level from low to medium
  16. Nope, not the answer... but neither is Slater Big difference here. Slater is a 4th line center, Jokinen is not. Jokinen wouldn't want to play 4th line minutes. It's just how it is. In Nashville i believe he is the 2nd line center even. He was never offered a contract here and rightfully so but no way he would have accepted 4th line minutes. Not a chance. Can believe he would have all you like but reality is, he's 2nd line center in Nashville getting 15-20 minutes a game, here? he'd get 7 or 8 minutes a game. Not worth it to pay him that much to be a 4th line center. Plus he really wasn't very good at winning face-offs and that's actually one of the things slater does pretty well. Didn't realize you and Oli were so close... I think offering Jokinen 3rd-4th line minutes and a transition to player-coach would have been a very attractive deal. To whom? He wouldnt have taken that deal when a team like Nashville was offering him more. And it would have hurt our team. Slater is a better 4th line Centre than Jokinen. Perrault is a better 3rd line centre than Jokinen. And Lowry is certainly too.
  17. I find it amusing when people question Bowman's business connections or his conservative support. Judy is a covered in selingers pocket lint. A strong and positive business community is a good thing. I think generally people are okay paying taxes of they feel they get a return on their investment. I don't believe anything about Judy or the NDP indicate they'd be fiscally responsible with our money. There has always been a desire to believe a good businessman who manage city finances better. We wanted Sammy to be that guy but quite frankly the stench of back room deals and corruption permeate him. You can say bowman is same old but that's a pessimistic view. He could be the right guy. I'd vote for bowman for two reasons. 1) I believe in his vision and I trust him. 2) I don't want Judy to win and bowman is the only alternative.
  18. The polls were way out last election. And this latest poll is a shocking turn of events. So you never know. The fact the pollster was even surprised and did another round of polling to confirm their results is interesting. My concern would be that Bowman has a lot of 'brand value' right now but will that translate into people on the street voting? I dont know... I think Judy supporters are Judy supporters. Period. When right-of-Judy voters get into the booth, will they all be drawn to Bowman? Im not so sure. The other thing to consider is the huge number of undecided. That's the game-changer. So far I'd say the undecided will likely swing towards Bowman as Judy hasnt done anything to help her cause this week, though it's only Tuesday. She was trounced on CJOB.
  19. jokinen is the answer? Oh come on.
  20. I think his platform was the opposite of what Judy and Brian had for platforms. He seemed very disjointed, flip flopping on BRT. I think he saw Judy and Bowman both supporting BRT and he had an "aha" moment - make this election all about BRT, let Bowman and Judy splt the pro-BRT vote and he'd cash in. Wrong again Cecil. His response to HoboGate was awful. His presser was a joke and disrespectful to the media present and the people who were watching and willing to hear his explanation. Had he bowed out gracefully a month ago, he'd be primed to fight another day. He's killed his political career.
  21. You make very valid points. Brian and judy are alike on some issues too. The Sun calling Brian more leftists than Judy is absurd though but whatever. Personally, I've voted NDP, Liberal and Conservative in my life. Generally my political leanings have shifted as I've gotten older and I identify with a party in a general sense. But I remember being a Manitoba PC supporter at the same time I voted for Cretien's Liberals. I didnt mind Doer's NDP as much as Selinger's for sure. People *do* get very defensive and personal about their choices. I understand that but I wouldnt call anyone an "idiot" for supporting the NDP. We just have different opinion. I might not understand why anyone would support Selinger or Trudeau but Im sure there are plenty of smart people that do. I wasnt sold on anyone initially. This has been a crazy campaign. Before the campaign began, i likes Paula, then I was intrigued with Bowman but certainly not sold. i like The Falcon. But ultimately it comes down to this. I dont like everything about Bowman but I dont like anything about Judy. Oh and if this election if a referendum on BRT as Steeves tried to make it, I think the people have spoken.
  22. Steeves supporters have been going on about how he generated the momentum and won the debates the past two weeks. I didnt see it though. It could certainly be an "Anyone But Judy" wave that is switching support. Who knows how decisive those votes would be. Steeves released a statement a few minutes ago calling into question the poll and basically calling the media organizations into question. Desperate move. And pretty pathetic.
  23. Buff gets the highest return and likely he's the easiest for us to absorb the loss of. So trading Buff probably makes us the most improved over trading anyone else. Philly has long been rumoured to want Buff (or Bogo). Can Buff get us Brayden Schenn? Ladd would be highly sought after too. A 30 goal scorer who has won a cup and is still reputed to be a leader. Trading Ladd & Buff would be a HUGE message and signal the changing of the guard from it being "their" team (they are very close personally) to it being the "new kids" team. It would be Kane, Scheif, Wheeler (not really a new kid), Trouba, Bogo. And the thing about that as a new core, those guys dont take nights off. The "old" core does. Dont forget Little who is very underated. Would not want to lose him.
  24. Collecting a pay cheque? The team definitely lacks leadership on the ice and on the bench. Just curious, but based on what? I'm not necessarily defending Andrew Ladd but needed Leadership comes in many different forms other than smashing guys in the face and looking mean. Ive been a huge Ladd fan for years and I always defended the "lack of leadership" argument by saying the same thing - that leadership comes in different forms. We've been told Ladd is a "quiet leader" who leads by example. Okay, so be it. And Im not a chicken little after five games. But what leadership has Ladd shown by example? A great leader is whatever the troops need him to be. I would look at Wheeler's actions and see a guy embracing the "A" on his chest and clearly frustrated. Then you've got guys like Scheif and Lowry who are just working their tails off every time they're on the ice. Its the same old story with this team - lack of effort, lack of heart. One of Ladd, Buff, Enstrom, Bogo has to go. maybe more than one. And the only reason I include Enstrom, who I like, in that list is because his skills will be well sought after and could fetch a good return. Also, he isnt the type of D we need right now. But Ladd and Buff are both called guys that can change the game when they want to. But they rarely seem to want to. People are now demanding Buff be moved back to D. Okay, well, remember how wonderful that worked out? Sure, he's deadly on D in the offensive zone. Unfortunately he's also deadly to the Jets on D in the defensive zone. Of the core, Bryan Little is a warrior. Ladd used to be. The last thing we want is the kids coming up, like Scheif, Trouba, Lowry to follow in the footsteps of the "core". We need a new core. I'd trade Ladd and Buff, move the "C" to Little or Wheeler, put an "A" on Scheif or Trouba and let the "young" core lead the team and that includes Kane who may or may not be a prick off the ice and may or may not be one dimensional on the nice but you never question his heart.
  25. Absolutely. She ran a very *ahem* conservative campaign. Hilarious presser today at her "North End home" (why does she always remind people she lives in the North End when her home is not what most people would think of when they think north end home?). She claims she's been running the entire campaign like she was two votes behind. Even if I didnt like Bowman, I'd be supporting him if for no other reason than to upset the NDP apple-cart. I still think she will win but no one can deny the #Bowmentum. Actually, many people were denying his momentum, saying Steeves had the momentum the last couple of weeks. But his fierce attacks were the last gasp of a desperate man. He was an empty suit from day one. Will the rise of the Falcon steal a few feel-good votes from Bowman though? Will this poll entrench Judy supporters? Will it cause some anti-Judy voters to switch to Bowman to put him over the top?
