At some point if Nichols can't go, you have to trust an unproven Davis or Bennett. These guys are the future. Willy had his chance. It was excruciating to watch and it was apparent that Bombers players also lost confidence in the previous starter - so why would you go back to him? Would it give the team a lift? Not to mention the fact that the fans have moved on: http://www.kijiji.ca/v-hockey/winnipeg/2-winnipeg-blue-bombers-drew-willy-signed-jerseys-for-sale/1187968008?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true

MOS might go with Willy if Nichols can't play but that would be a mistake. His team-mates checked out on him several games ago.

CFL - Week 7 BC @ Montreal/ Sask @ Calgary
Doublezero replied to Mr Dee's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
Got bored and did not watch Riders-Stamps to the end. It was just sloppy football, too many officiating interruptions etc. Zero inensity. Ended up feeling wistful for the days of Liske vs Lancaster, Reid, Buchanan and Evanshen. -

Bryant Turner Jr. gets 2 sacks vs Als and says on TV: "Thank-you Wade Miller - I love you!" Kevin Glenn almost throws a pick 6 in the final 3 mins, reminding of the KG we sort of fondly remember. -
Good recruiting and roster management has been obvious last few games. That 6 game injured list is scary long and some of the so-called replacements look like they belong. In fact many of them are playing at a higher level than the team-mates they are replacing. D backfield is a case in point. You've got Randle out and Johnny Adams has yet to play - who do you sit to make room for them? Or do you?
-
With Hardrick out, the flaws in the run game were exposed. Plays taking too long to form, also Harris may not quite have the wheels he had a couple years ago. He's a spark though, and peeled off some nice single-handed gains. But ya, run blocking looked sloppy. I'm going to cut everyone slack due to the long delay in starting the game and lateness of the hour.

I'm thinking of players in the tradition of Flutie, Ham, Moon - guy doesn't have to be a bruiser but D has to respect the threat that the QB might run and actually win a successful foot race for a first down. So to me dual threat equals mobility and escapability - but not that the QB is always going to run first. If the O can scheme around a QBs athleticism, so much the better. Who is a dual threat right now? Collaros (assuming he comes back OK) Reilly, Lulay, Jennings, Cato. Burris and Durant could and would run successfully earlier in their careers - and defences learned to expect and respect that threat. You've got guys like Lynch, Franklin, Davis and Bennett who are athletic. Those are the kinds of QBs that Defences have to think might run.
-
Dual-threat QBs are exciting to watch and best suited for the CFL. Experienced coaching helps: and a few ex QBs at coach or GM - Huffer, Dickenson, Austin, Milanovich, Maas

Yes he did http://www.winnipegsun.com/2015/11/06/qb-dominique-davis-performs-well-in-first-cfl-start-but-bombers-lose-season-finale-to-argos

My reply was to those who keep repeating that Drew Willy was on fire and pretty much single-handedly won a bunch of games for Bombers in early 2014 and wouldn't it be great if he could return to his old form etc. The idea that Drew Willy orchestrated 5-6 wins early in 2014 is a myth. He contributed majorly to a couple of them, for sure. But Bombers needed outstanding play - and, most importantly major scores - from other elements of the team. So yes, I agree with you - it doesn't matter which components of the team win the game for you - unless you attribute the win (as some have) to the play of the QB which in a few of those early 2014 wins was less than stellar, very average and nothing to write home about.
-
What I meant was Randle took a pick to the house for six points, and without those points we would have lost the game because Drew Willy and the O didn't generate enough points to win the game - so the win was a direct result of the D adding scores. Otherwise it would have been a loss. Another win (in that early stretch of wins in 2014) was the result of a Demond Washington kick return for a TD. Without those 6 points Bombers would have lost the game because the O could not generate enough points to win on its own. There was a another game where the D was responsible for the win too.
-
Not to quibble too much about that winning run but without Defence and Special Teams - pick sixes and kick returns for TDs - Winnipeg would have lost 3 of those games. Because the Offence didn't score enough points.

Nichols played better than Reilly.
-
Drew Willy's shortcomings have been obvious to all, including his team-mates. Don't care if I see him again. Nichols put points on the board, provided some spark and played with energy and tempo, managed the offence and did not turn over the ball. That's what you need. O line also was inspired to play hard with a determined QB. Rooks on D stepped up big-time.
-
Special Teams Amigos didn't recognize they had a dud QB. Now that they do, let's hope they stick to their decision and move on. Good thing they kept Nichols. Time for him to prove something.

I was pretty excited to see 3 Canadians Miller Walters MOS take charge in 2014. Canadians who understand 3 downs and a 65 yard wide field. Problem is they are all ex Special Teams men. Hence no one was really in a position to assess Drew Willy's actual level of competency as a QB, for example. This is the root of the problem. The better CFL clubs have an ex-QB as HC or GM. It's just obvious. In the CFL you go as your QB goes. And you need an eye for that.
-
That was a reckless rolling tackle by Corvey Irvin, IMHO. Takes out an excellent QB. Very unfortunate. But yeah, next man up. Brock Jensen. Could be interesting.
-
Actually I was a lot more polite and respectful to him than you are with me. Why do you always attack the person posting, rather than the content of the post?
-
It will be interesting to see if other CFL teams hire MOS or Walters in any capacity after they are canned. I suspect MOS might get a shot in a coordinator capacity somewhere. Walters, not so much. I thought for a while that it might be worth keeping MOS around here as ST coach. But then, nah, because how many failed former head coaches can you really have on one team? Hopefully whoever comes in next, gets rid of all the failed former head coaches currently employed by the Bombers to erase the odour of failure entirely. Maybe give IGF a good smudging too - just to purge the unseen demons and start fresh in 2017.
-
Met Walters only once and found him to be completely full of himself, arrogant and condescending, which was a bit of a surprise considering he was a forgettable CFL player and quite inconsequential coach before rising to his current lofty position. My criticism isn't based on that one negative interpersonal experience however. My criticism would be based on the cumulative totality of negative experiences I have had as a Bomber fan watching Walters-managed teams consistently lose since mid 2013. His W-L record so far is 15 wins 39 losses I believe. No doubt it will be 15-40 next week. That fact in itself should more than qualify him for a one-way ticket to CIS football, Golds Gym manager, bag boy or whatever.

Does a blow out against the Eskimos cost MOS his job?
Doublezero replied to White Out's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
Well this is the kiss of death right here. Not happening this week, but opens the door to MOS firing in future. You can't actually close the door after this. So, ya, I'd say blowout in Eskville, MOS gone. And rightly so. Darrin Bauming Retweeted gary lawless @garylawless 4h4 hours ago any speculation about staffing changes with #bombers is premature. not happening at this juncture #bombers sources #cfl -
I can see where it would be useful in a hurry-up, no huddle. And a downside risk it sucks rhythm out of the offence if they'e huddling before each snap. Has anyone noticed how long it usually takes Winnipeg to put the ball in play after breaking huddle?
-
Exactly. Since being anointed starting QB for Winnipeg in 2014 Willy has played 28 games. And he has thrown 27 TDs. That is almost one whole touchdown per game, just about. But not quite.
-
Due to poor play and lack of production Buck Pierce, current QB coach, lost his starting QB job to Justin Goltz in 2012. Paul Lapolice was head coach at that time. Now those two fantastic winners, Pierce and Lapolice, are guiding Drew 'Two-N-Out' Willy. This is the context. What do people expect?

Week 3 (vs Ham...Now With Depth Chart)
Doublezero replied to Noeller's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
Very exciting and entertaining game. Neither QB was very good. But thanks to Andrew Harris and the Defence - a win!
