We will get a vaccine for one strain of covid... but it will keep mutating and evolving - it either magically goes away - via randomness or herd immunity - or it doesn't and we remain prisoners of ourselves or we treat it as 'another flu' next year In Manitoba, this winter 1900 confirmed cases of the flu... 403 people were hospitalized with the flu, 40 in ICU and 29 died... for Covid, 7 died out of 330 confirmed cases of covid (with almost no hospitalizations) Why do we ignore Manitoba statistics but we all focus on Florida because its a total gong show... not much about this makes sense.

https://www.bloomberg.com/graphics/2020-coronavirus-where-is-the-us-on-the-curve/ This is a very good article about what is actually happening in the states instead of Trump-distorted sound bites or covid hysteria... For the most part, the US has covid under control... 80% of the states have flattened or eradicated 'the curve'... yet all we here is how Florida hospitals are about to be 'overwhelmed'

I agree... but the sports proposals are going well beyond that - at a time when we are opening up... doesn't make sense

Yeah, umm that is someone else's argument... Way to google... looks like you're an expert on northern Indigenous culture now too!! Its a big day. Still missing the point... 'I' didn't decide they were offensive - I am simply respecting the decision and the request of these other cultures based on 20+ years in the north and their territories. You've done a great job of twisting your original argument of 'why should we change Esks becuase it has history and only some are offended' to 'I'm attacking free speech because of my personal offence' I worked with the inuvialuit for two years and they are the Inuit group that is most accepting of the term 'Eskimo' in Canada... I can assure you that the term Eskimo is never substituted for Inuvialuit or Inuit anywhere other than at a cabin or the Legion or on a weekend fishing expedition... Anyway, you've dug your heels in and along the way, you have opened my eyes to what systemic racism actually is in Canada... I hope you sit down and at least consider your error.

I don't know why I'm bothering because I'm fairly skeptical you're open to anything that might be a positive idea about the CFL ha... The whole point is that you essentially don't need a bubble like this in western Canada... if the players who come in are proved to be covid free, why keep all of them quarantined from the rest of the populace? Let them go out and have lives... we already have masks, social distancing, etc etc and there's almost zero community spread in western Canada. The 105 day quarantine seems ridicilous.

The 6-game plan is just not going to work... CFL needs half a season (12 weeks and then 3 weeks for playoffs) but training camp would have to start early/mid-August and the CFL/CFLPA would need to agree to a plan by the end of this week basically. As usual, instead of just making a basic sensible plan - CFL leadership is all over the charts I mean why exactly would the teams have to quarantine for the whole season when there's a western Canada travel bubble in existence and each province is re-opening in Phases? Makes zero sense... quarantine for two weeks on arrival and then test the players after each game (one day quarantine)...

You're missing the entire point and now doubling down in a wounded 'you called me a racist- I don't see colour' persona and then saying 'well if we were changing the Indian Act oh then I would be on your side'... ha that's rich... what a weak move. Once again, Indian and Eskimo have not been the 'common names' since the 1980s/90s... there's no excuse for you not to understand that. The whole point of the issue is that Inuit is the Inuktitut word for their people, Indigenous is the word that First Nations cultures chose to use... not names that were labels - with derogatory connotations - given to them by other cultures. No one is calling you racist but your ignorance does unfortunately highlight the systemic racism that people are currently campaigning against. You don't mean to be racist - and claim to just be being fair - yet your continued use of these terms does hurt and offend people in these cultures. The amount of effort for you to educate yourself and use Inuk instead of Eskimo for example - is about zero - no impact on your life whatsoever. Yet it demonstrates a basic respect for another culture that becomes a part of slowly changing society. Your unwillingness to even consider that says a lot more than you realize.

That was a fun game to be at... crowd was nuts
-
cool - well you drive down to Stony Plain and go say hi to all the ‘Indians’ living there... go to the casino and have a beer talk about how Paki is offensive and Indian is not... neither are as bad as the n-word for sure... Best case scenario you won’t get your ass kicked and you will once and for all prove your moral high ground - I’ll wait in the Yukon for your update
-
This thread is incredible - somehow the guys who are cool with Eskimo are now social justice warriors for mercury poisoning haha whats sad is everyone commenting about clean water issues on First Nations probably doesn’t know just how much has been done to address this in the past couple years... So to recap, insurance companies suck so it’s not fair to change the name because the Inuit have not held a referendum... ummmm

Go back under your bridge.

Dude I’m not emotional and I am very familiar with your devils advocate style yeah it’s great to say we all don’t care about skin colour blah blah - and then throw out the white people comment. Ha - nice deflection Enjoy your insulated Vancouver life buddy... say hi to the Chinks and **** and Pakis for me
-
Yeah I do have the internet as well but thanks for your concern
-
What on earth are you babbling about... ive lived north of 60 for 25 years and worked for/with the Inuit and First Nations you really are out of your depth - and the more you casually use those words to show how they are ‘not racist’ drmonstrates just how quietly racist they are...
-
You do understand that Indian is deemed a racist term as well right - for like well over a decade? First Nations or Indigenous is the term. Eskimo and Indian are not like 'black or white'... the more you post the more Whitebread you sound.
-
All I get is CBC out here... and every news cycle they mention 'the Edmonton football club'
-
Yeah I'm pretty sure Natan Obed is working on that too...
-
Because it doesn't fit with your argument...? Edmonton is all over the news today - linked with the Redskins name change... you're delusional if you think govt wants to be anywhere near the CFL right now
-
Bel Air is not leading this campaign - Natan Obed is... the leader of ITK At the very LEAST, changing the name is a goodwill gesture towards the right of Inuit people to 'not be mascots'... I suggest a compromise and we go with Edmonton Newfies - in honour of Fort MacMurray
-
Aside from the logo, I don't see how Braves is a racist name - is it not akin to Cowboys, Vikings and Patriots?
-
Natan Obed is not 'some white minority'... This is an issue that he brought to the spotlight and I doubt it goes away. Very tone deaf on the part of CFL. He outlined his argument a long time ago - https://nunatsiaq.com/stories/article/65674natan_obed_why_the_name_edmonton_eskimos_harms_inuit/

I've been in the north for almost 25 years now... Jordin Tootoo, Tanya Tagaq and Mumillaq Qaqqaq's voices have A LOT of weight up here. I too know a lot of people that don't care about the word Eskimo... but its DOES have systemic racism connotations. Eskimos just lost Boston Pizza as a sponsor... once again, the CFL is behind an issue instead of ahead of it. On a basic economic level, any diehard fan or casual fan would not 'stop liking' CFL football if they were 'forced' to cheer for the Edmonton Elks... but the name Eskimos has been hurting the CFL brand and now the bottom line. Minority voices or not... the Eskimos brand now prevents the Feds from giving the CFL any sort of bailout... what point are we trying to prove?
-
Well I hate to break it to you but Canada barely knows what the CFL is... ha if the Eskimos have a letter from the IRC (Inuvialuit leadership) and NTI (Nunavut tunngavik) saying that the name is not offensive, it’s a non issue... if not, then just change the name - every move a private business makes does not have to appease all canadians - but right now the name Eskimos is not helping the brand if Edmonton came out and said we are being proactive in support of indigenous peoples and changing the name - look at how much free advertising and goodwill the CFL would get... at a time when we are asking Canada for money
-
So you actually think holding a referendum about a CFL team name in Nunavut and the western arctic is a good way to spend time and money? the Inuit have elected leadership - at worst ask them and get an endorsement or change it - but more comments I read on this thread - like generalizing about voter turnout and what ‘Eskimo’ really means - the more I’d say it just should be changed... like what is the actual argument against changing eskimos to say ‘elks’ other than ‘its always been like this’... and in that argument, I’d say there’s an element of systemic racism - if you think about it
