This black/white 'lives save vs. economy' argument makes zero sense... all rational people know that you can't just shut down a country and not expect economic consequences - economy is directly linked to overall health. While we crow about saving all lives from covid, we are cancelling a massive number of tests and treatments... shutting down a large chunk of the economy will mean irreparable damage to small and mid-size businesses. The structural debt we are creating today will result in health care cuts 10 years from now... etc etc etc Globally, our economic shutdown is already having a massive effect on third world economies. The death toll world wide from this sudden massive exposure of poverty will far outweigh Covid. This 'no one must die from Covid' hero thing is a bit much.

Are you speaking globally or just Canada?

I have a buddy with a woodcutting and dog sledding company in Alaska... he's tried twice for their small business emergency funding in the past couple weeks - application goes in and then just no response. Like no confirmation or follow-up or anything... he doesn't believe he will see any money ever.
-
Huge props to Trudeau again... in my industry, some of those $2000 cheques were received within two day - impressive. Also the small business loan program was online with banks as of yesterday plus they lightened the requirements to prove lost revenue - amazing that we can roll this out so fast and efficiently yet its taking forever to fix the payroll boondoggle.

We have police at the Yukon-NWT border north of the Arctic Circle... things are getting strange

Like I said, let’s wait a week - the curve is absolutely flattened in BC so we’ve proven social distancing works - now we watch for the fallout of extending it - crime, withdrawal, depression, health care cutoff... not saying right or wrong - but we are in some uncharted territory - Whitehorse police looking for armed b&e suspects now... this is a very rare crime up here

I like information. And I wasn't actually arguing. However, you're excerpt is fairly critical... I've been reading about this today and I can't figure out why they aren't comparing to more countries - Sweden is somewhere in the middle right now
-
I'd be shocked if BC doesn't go OL with their first pick... Hallet seems high - think he's available to the bombers, Williams I think is supposed to go top five
-
what is disgusting is the amount of cancer treatments and CT scans, etc being cancelled right now...
-
Sweden is taking a 'lowered spike' approach instead of a flattened curve - we can't really judge it until 1-2 more weeks have passed Norway and Denmark also have half the populations of Sweden... while the comparison is partially valid - it should also be compared to Spain and Italy who have similar populations over similar land mass.

since when do we do this? I mean if this was an actual tenet of western civilization, cigarettes And alcohol would be completely banned you would lose your license over any infraction, you should be quarantined if you have the flu, etc covid is serious but we are losing our collective perspective - we have never functioned on ‘saving all lives’ possible, our society functions on collective good ... and not the band either

I'm just talking about now - yes I agree and most have just been turned into half-assed care facilities... But rural hospitals are quiet right now - almost no one is going to hospitals other than for covid
-
Not sure what you're point actually is... no one is saying go party at the cabin for the weekend - but going in with the intent of a two month quarantine - what's wrong with that? You bust GC for going to Paint Lake and no it turns out your dad is living in cabin country... just a weird position. And rural hospitals are quieter than ever. True.
-
The idea of forcing people to stay in the city makes zero sense to me... rural hospitals are empty and if you commit to quarantining at your cabin for two weeks is that not better than our urban version of quarantining where everyone still goes jogging or to Walmart every second day. Southern Canada doesn't really understand how easy it is to stay at your cabin for a month or more after stocking up - seems a lot safer and more responsible to me... everyone thinks 'cabin country' is Canmore or Muskoka

More than two weeks ago, I saw pics of a park in Vancouver completely converted to a triage/quarantine plus they had BC Place on standby Horgan has done an amazing job without scare-mongering or releasing big numbers to make himself look good - very impressed.

Not much to say if you somehow believe that Obama's campaign wasn't populist and wasn't about more than "I'm not GWB'... He was a fringe candidate at the start who gained momentum because there was substance - that's why he destroyed the 'safe' candidate in Hillary. Obama's healthcare plan back then was considered just as 'crazy' as Bernie's plan is now... Biden has no platform - he's a weak candidate who relies on Obama showing up and doing everything for him. If he wins, its ALL on Obama - but I don't see it.

A friend of mine just travelled from Calgary to Grande Prairie/FSJ for work... Calgary sounds like its total buy-in lockdown while life if just going on normally in GP - said its fkn weird.
-
While I enjoy the Washington Post, the reports of hundreds of deaths in New York not being classified as covid is likely what's flattening the curve in the US I'm going to wait on this one - I think Canada will flatten quickly like BC did... US not so much

Paint Lake is a sweet spot.

You don't remember much about pre-White House Obama... Change and Hope was a far left campaign.

Agree totally. Except this time I think Trump has an advantage because this is a 'war-time' situation... Americans will not want wholesale change. I think we are once again under-estimating not how much people hate Trump but how much they hate politicians in the states... Trump will get votes because large blocks of the country will not be affected by covid, he will throw some money at people, he's stealing $10 trillion for the stock market so its already bumping up and most importantly - it seems like when he speaks its genuine - even if its crazy awful mean lies... Biden starts stumbling even while reading his teleprompter - its not good - Trump will lure him into a Howard Dean moment and sink him I'd be surprised if we don't see Trump with the Republican congress and senate - scary thought.
-
Except people don't want that... these are extreme times - people want change Even with Kamala Harris, Biden is going to get creamed - Dems making all the same mistakes as 2016 - and everyone is kind of making all the same justifications for their candidate
-
Especially the voters...
-
This Sanders/Putin thing was announced by the Whitehouse as a distraction... Trump was far more scared of Bernie than any other Dem... Bernie is a leftwing populist - exactly the type that would get elected. Biden is already trying to be non-partisan with Trump and getting suckered in... just like the Dems do every single time - Charlie Brown syndrome
-
The plan is Cuomo. Biden is a dud.
