Coddled Dome Dwellers @ Back 2 Back Champs: The Week Of Thread
GCn20 replied to Noeller's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
I just find that kind of argument to be such a straw man argument. If the other team had played better and made more plays when they had the chance they would have won. That is literally the difference between winning and losing in every football game ever played. Nah.... we let them hang around. -

Seems you are correct about Kongbo being a FA on his return. However, it is because the Bombers had a handshake agreement to release him after his first season to look at NFL opportunities. Only way he would sign I guess. -

Shepley opted out of his option year of 2020 when the season was cancelled. Had 2020 season happened he was obligated to return to the RIders if he wanted to continue in the CFL. All players with their option year landing in 2020 were given that right when the season was cancelled. His rookie contract would have expired at the end of 2020, so you are correct that last year or this year he was a gun for hire if he returned. The option year did not carry over beyond 2020 for those that left for the NFL in their option at the end of 2019. CFL teams retaining rights on those leaving in the option year of their contract is in black and white in the CBA. The CFL had closed the option year window for a number of years and you could only go to the NFL when released, or at the expiry of your contract but a few years ago they put the option window back in under the old terms of teams retaining your rights until the end of your option. They felt this would help recruitment when other pro leagues began to emerge and compete for our prospective players. -

He would be required to report under his current contract. I would think at that point the Lions would seriously consider extension but don't have to until the offseason. And we retained his rights after his first NFL foray, he was not a FA on his return to us, his only CFL option that year was us. Desjarlais signed his rookie contract before the 2+1 provision existed. His rookie deal was a 2 year deal. -

Yes, he would be BC property if he was signed by the NFL prior to next season, released by the NFL while CFL season was still underway. All 3 left for the NFL as their current CFL contracts were expiring. If they left during their option year NFL window allows, the CFL team maintains their rights for the remainder of the CFL contract. They have 10 days after their release to either get picked up by another NFL team, be placed on a PR, or the contract comes back into effect and they effectively cannot sign elsewhere in the NFL and are expected to return to their CFL team. -

Nope. Contract goes back to CFL club if you sign in the NFL window. Kongbo left at the expiry of his contracts. Shepley returned to the RIders after his first NFL try, as they held his rights, and then this time left at the expiration of his contract with the Riders. They are released as a formality. -

Thanks for the info, I do believe that the team has the OPTION to sign him to a new contract as long as it represents an extension. Kind of what option year means. If they want to pick up the option on his 3rd year they are also free to do that as well. -

He has an NFL option window just like every other player. He would only be released if NFL interest came outside that window. They cannot lock him down now. -

If they re-up him he forgoes the NFL window. That's the reason for doing it. However, if they don't his rights remain with BC on his current contract. -

Doesn't matter. What they couldn't do is raise his pay for this year as he is on his rookie deal and that must run for 2 years. The third year of his contract can be ripped up and he can sign an extension. -

That is only in effect for 2 years. They can terminate the contract and sign him to a new contract after this season as standard CFL contracts for first time players are designated at 2 years. -

Quite likely. Sad but true. Sending out a guy with a busted wheel is not particularly smart. -

I know there is a max amount on rookie contracts for drafted players, but it was my understanding that was only in place for the first 2 years. -

Karma? How does us beating them all 3 games have anything to do with karma? Calgary should not have won any of those games, they were not the better team in any of them? In fact, if you believe in karma the argument would be that we should cream them by 20+ points because the closeness of our 3 meetings is not reflective of how we outplayed them every single game. He is under a rookie contract next year. It would be monumentally stupid of the Lions to not up him in the offseason but they don't actually have to do so. BC is going to lose to Calgary. Calgary is the more well rounded team. Meh...we beat them all 3 and that will be in their head as well. -

Ellingson is the perfect illustration of why it is stupid to rush players back. Not sure why you are arguing that it is a good idea? Rourke will probably get re-injured, doesn't deserve it, but it is a likely scenario. I don't agree that Rourke deserves to be re-injured, but the LIons rushing him back will likely pay the price for it and deservedly so. At any rate, they don't have much hope of winning in the playoffs with or without Rourke. -

Moncrief got torched regularly by OCs around the league in coverage. Demski lit him up for like 5 TDs just by himself. -

Our only potential issue on offence next year is if more than one of our OL retires. -

Could be that he leaves football completely behind, just have a hunch its in his blood. I would rather move Wilson to MLB than to have Sankey. He limits what his defences can do. Moncrief, imo, had a disastrous year. Just awful. -

I think that Bighill will transition to coaching with the Bombers and continue his other career in WInnipeg. I think he has an exit strategy all worked out when it's time. Biggie doesn't seem like the type of guy who will stick around past his prime. He has too many other options. Yea. I just have strong opinions on Sankey because I went back and watched some of his games and the guy literally never leaves the tackle box. -

Sankey is a one trick pony. I would rather have a MLBer that can play sideline to sideline. All Sankey is good for is sitting in the middle and tackling running backs after they gained 5 yards. Everyone raves about Sankey, and I don't get it. Calgary let him walk for a reason. He is one dimensional and all the raves are just the media fawning over stats taken out of context. I would rather sign Sankey as an undersized DE than a MLB. Problem is that Sankey presents limitations to our defence. There is a reason that the Sask secondary got torched over the middle this year and how teams were able to just run away from their DL most of the season by rolling out against a slow MLB that couldn't contain. -

That is a question for sure. Would like to see us recruit strongly at MLB next year and maybe platoon him a bit. -

For sure. We need to let them knock the rust off, take that first hit back and run around a bit at game speed. -

True. In the case of MLBs I prefer the eyeball test. Does a team run at you? When they do, do they run for a high average? Everyone in Regina is raving about Sankey being the one great player against Calgary last week. I say what? Calgary literally ran for like 200+ yards between the tackles against them with 3 different running backs and had something like a 7.5 ypc average. I would say that the MLB had a busy day, but definitely not a good one. I would give it to Lemon. I'd rather have Bighill than Sankey....and it ain't even a contest. Dean? Well he would be a nice add depending on Wilson's health. Put Fajardo behind a great OL and he can probably be a decent QB. That could be said about any starter in this league and a lot of the backups. -

LOL...oops....well Jermaine is probably just as good. You can say that because he demonstrated it even last year and in 2019. -

Normally I would agree with you, however, not this year. Our offence fully stocked may score on every drive. Sounds too good to be true but we've had multiple games this has almost happened. There is no offence in this league that can come remotely close to doing that against our defence. Our defence, although not as dominant as last year or the year before, is still the best in the CFL at keeping teams from scoring. It will take 30+ points to beat our offence. I don't see it happening unless we take the day off. He needs to get his game legs back. We don't necessarily have to heavily target him or anything but getting the legs and game speed back will be important to him.
