I could care less what the government does to lower prices. If it's taking it from the oil companies....fantastic....even better. What i do know, is that there is a scheduled 15 cent a liter increase in carbon tax coming up in the next couple of weeks. My contention is that it should be delayed given the price of gas right now. If the government, in the meantime or afterwards, wants to find a way to cap the prices at the pump at the expense of the oil companies I'm all for it. They have my complete support.

Exactly. If it weren't for trading government subsidies for profit, Tesla is a money loser....and it's supposed to be the gold standard of EV companies. I would like to sit on an ivory tower like everyone else and extoll the virtues of a great reset, where taxation doesn't matter and cars fart purple rainbows. and the water is so clean we can drink it out of puddles. Unfortunately, for the idealists, this is a fantasy at this point and time and penalizing seniors, low to mid income people to try and make their fairies fly does a ton of damage to their ability to eat, feed their children, and have any kind of half decent shot at normal standard of living. I think many on here would be be very surprised to learn that there are for more people concerned about their gas and heating bills than there are people who are concerned about a green revolution. Tax those people too hard and it's game over for the government of the day. I am certainly not trying to make light of environmental concerns because I too care. However, I care more about having enough money to pay my bills so that I am not forced to live in a cardboard box. When I sold my businesses and retired, I did so with a nest egg that would allow me to retire but not with a ton of breathing room for massive inflation and taxation. The last 2 years has really got me thinking that I may have to go back to work for a few years to make sure I can feed myself when I am a senior. I am far luckier than most in that regard but I worked 100 hour weeks for 25 years to be able to have this leg up. I have many friends and family who are not as fortunate and are selling off assets just to make ends meet, and have no prospect of retirement even though they are eligible. Now I realize that not all of this is the fault of government and there are global issues at play, but I believe it is remarkably short sighted, and narrow minded, for our governments to try squeeze blood from a stone right now. Does delaying tax increases solve the problem of high oil costs, or inflation? No it doesn't, but it is absolutely disingenuous to suggest that tax delays wouldn't help a family struggling to get by right now.,

Look out the Elon fan boys will be rolling in soon but I agree. A ton of people here crying because of big oil making too much money but extolling the virtues of subsidizing one of the world's richest men in Musk. It's hypocrisy. As you stated, they are penalizing his competition right now through taxation. I am not going to debate environmental reform, as it is very important, but making the lower and middle class pay for it at the pump and in their daily heating and grocery bills is a very slimy way to push this agenda forward.

Nice try. I have stated that the NDP are a socialist party. I have never stated they are communist....and communists are a real threat to ANY democratic nation. It's not helping. Putting words in my mouth I see. One can ask the government to be accountable to the people and not be happy about corporate greed at the same time. That's such a Liberal way of deflecting blame and it's sickening. Someone disagrees with almight Trudeau paint him as a right wing fanatic by putting words in their mouths. Disgusting way of arguing a point. Shame on you.

For sure Albertans would be POed, but tough nuggets to them.
-
We are not in a position to bankrupt people through taxation either.
-
Sure....but that's 20 years away from fruition even if we start now. Oil is here for awhile yet. This is an excellent suggestion.
-
Short term yes, long term no. Or we won't need oil in 2 years? Is that your assumption?
-
There is no question that big oil makes big money. That will never change. That doesn't mean that the federal government doesn't have a fiduciary duty to the tax and rate payers to minimize the cost they pay in any way they can.
-
Nope. I don't think vulgarity is uncalled for at this point and time when looking at the gas prices. I am not saying their is a magic bullet that makes gas prices go down to 50 cents a litre in Canada. However, there is no need to be paying 2 dollars a litre either. We can certainly make up the shortfall of oil created by the sanctions on Russia, and stabilize the price of oil at the 100 dollar a barrel mark if we act quickly and especially if we can get Keystone XL up and running. Of immediate concern is the nonsensical refusal of the Liberal government to delay the next implementation of the carbon tax. They should not only be delaying that, but also repealing former increases until world oil supply stabilizes and prices drop to consumers. The Liberal party just keeps showing how out of touch they are with the lower and middle classes by taxing gasoline at the pump right now.
-
Last time I checked neither Harper or Kenney were part of the federal government so save your red herring. The time is now for the Liberal party to take a reality check on our national energy policy, quit blaming the past, and doing something now and for the future. Failure to act now is a failure of government. They are the government, if their are areas of concern address them. What will be accomplished by complaining? Maybe change. Last time I checked when enough of the voters complain loudly, the government usually moves these items up on their agenda. Or we can just sit back and take it in the ass like good obedient Canadians. The Liberals could start by giving some relief by delaying the implementation of the carbon tax scheduled for April...but it doesn't appear as though they care about the lower or middle class who quite frankly can't afford this tax right now.
-
If there ever was a time to ***** about gas prices and our national energy policy in general, it's now.
-
Yes, lets wait 15 years for electric vehicles and 60 dollar barrels of oil. smh
-
For sure that's a big factor. However, US has a ton of processing capacity for our oil if we were to ship it raw.

2021/22 - CFL Offseason - Non-Back-to-Back Grey Cup Champion Thread
GCn20 replied to JCon's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
Good catch. Did anyone else notice that the word success almost has as many S's as the Riders have Grey Cups....and it's only a 7 letter word. -
That's good news for the EU and impetus for them to cancel Russian oil. I am still unclear why Canada is not in the oil conversation.
-
Makes zero sense to go get Russian oil or Venezuelas when you have your best friend and ally in Canada with more oil than both of them sitting next door not taking it out of the ground. The Liberals have made a dog's breakfast out of our oil industry and now is the time to correct it.
-
Canada has as much oil reserves as Russia and UAE combined. Trudeau needs to get the Pipestone XL going.
-
The West, ALL of them, are not still buying his oil. Canada, for instance, has stopped. Biden is expected to do so in the next couple days and Germany has cancelled the Nordstream pipeline that will cost trillions to Russia in oil exports. The West's condemnation does a hell of a lot more than hurt Putin's feelings. His economy is in free fall, the rouble has crashed and so has his stock market, and China has already come out and stated that they will not be the safety net for their economy and wish to remain somewhat neutral. I am not sure where you are getting your facts from? Vladimir Putin's reign will not survive anything but absolute surrender by the Ukrainians on amicable terms that causes the West to reduce sanctions. Already powerful oligarchs are calling for his head.

Sorry man, I think you are out to lunch. Been drinking the Glenn Beck koolaid or what? China's total trade with Russia per annum is 90 billion dollars China's total trade to the US per annum 1.6 trillion China is going to stay arms length from Russia. They will attempt to leverage the situation to gain trade advantage but siding with Russia completely...not going to happen. It's simple economics really.

I've been out of the loop on video games since the PS3 really. I own all the consoles since but did very little gaming due to time constraints. I have invested in a decent gaming computer and bought a loaded hdd with Batocera and games so I can catch up on some titles and do some other retro gaming that isn't as time consuming. It took some setting up but I sure love the Batocera front end and ease of use. Having 60000 games at my disposal is fantastic. Now to find the time.....

Unfortunately what you are describing is a war crime under the Geneva convention now. You cannot line up people against a wall and shoot them and the world cannot pretend it doesn't know and turn it's back anymore. Life is different than in 1945, the Geneva convention outlawed all the things you are describing as war crimes and life has changed since 1991 because it is near impossible to not have that kind of information leaked and broadcast to the whole world within minutes of it occurring. The world could pretend it didn't know about such atrocities and people couldn't provide proof it was happening. Now these things occur but are broadcast in real time by anyone with an internet connection and a flip phone. Bottom line this is 2022, what was done in the past is no longer relevant. The world has changed. So long as Russia is occupying a sovereign nation with no pretext for doing so they will be sanctioned. The longer the sanctions go the more it weakens Putin's grip on power. Eventually. either his own people remove him or he can no longer fund his war machine and the rest of the world steps in and gives him his day at the end of the rope in The Hague. His only path to victory was a combination of Ukraine not putting up any resistance, and the West sitting idly by. He grieviously miscalculated on both fronts.
-
No. I see that as a lost battle, but certainly not the war. What is different about your scenario than what has been in place since 2014. Putin cannot win this war because the international community will never recognize his borders or sovereignty over the region. They are occupiers of Ukrainian territory and nothing more in the eyes of the world. Secondly, the need for Russia to leave massive amounts of troops in place is not f'ing off home. It is occupation...nothing more and that is not a won war.
-
Different now. You can't control things without at least some level of compliance from the people you are trying to control. Ukraine and it's army will not ever follow the direction of Putin or any of his puppets. In order for Putin or his puppet to have control it will take military occupation by Russia to gain compliance of the people. Russia's economy cannot survive it.
