He spent only one year here.

I never pumped his tires at any point but believe he never got enough playing time. One can have a balanced approach to assessing things without being extreme. You should try it.

I honestly think people are being a little too hard on Simonise. He's young and hasn't really been given much opportunity yet. Lots of NAT receivers don't come into their own in their first couple years. Here in Winnipeg he just got stuck behind a pretty darned good trio of NAT receivers who deserved the playing time they got, and in BC the Lions were not in a position to give him much opportunity because they could not realistically give developmental reps to him. I would like to see his next year before declaring him a bust. There are plenty of reliable NAT receivers who did bupkus their first couple years before getting their chance.

I'd be far more leery about his injury history than his measurables at this point. Hopefully, he is healthy, healed, and can break the Poblah curse.

He was an excellent rusher at a time that defences weren't really designed to stop a running QB. His rushing totals would be pretty pedestrian now imo.

Damon Allen is the most over rated QB of all time. He is Kevin Glenn with a Grey Cup win and better luck finding a starting job imo. He was never a top 2 or 3 QB in any year he ever played. Simon had a great run as a receiver but always had great QBs throwing him the ball. He's one of the all time greats but Milt is the best ever and it is not even close. It is unthinkable what Milt might have done if 3/4 of his career he didn't have hobos throwing him the ball.

I get that government contracts tend to receive sky high bids but when it becomes ridiculous it just frosts my pumpkin. Just giving away our money. aargh.... I suppose in this case the bright side is at least he's giving it to Canadians.

The contractor on that job is going to make some huge coin. 3 mil for basically demo, insulation, windows, and some foundation work? How big are these 3 other buildings? 80000 sq ft? A friend of a friend built a 14,000 sq ft with a 6 car garage/indoor pool and all high end finishes for 3.5 million a couple of years ago. That place is a freaking palace. Marble floors for cripes sakes....I just don't know how a lake house of what looks to around 4-5000 sq ft can cost 8.6 for renos.

How can a renovation to that size house cost 8.6 million? They could bulldoze it and put up a nicer house for half that amount. Of course, there is historic value but I really don't know what they could spend 8.6 million on. Gold toilet?

You're probably right, but never say never. There is always a chance of government or sponsor bailout and cooperation. We'll have to wait and see. It's a longshot but until someone says the season is cancelled it's not cancelled. As for American travellers, there may be exceptions made for sports. It's been known to happen many, many times in the past. Also, Trudeau has already stated there will be exceptions made for seasonal farm workers etc, he may extend that to professional sports. I wouldn't rule out a late starting season with no fans in the stands. A team with no profitability was able to get a 200m stadium built with zero chance they could ever repay it. Would it shock you if the government "loaned" the CFL money to operate this season? Who knows...maybe the CFL is allowed to qualify for the 75% wage subsidy by the feds.

I don't know what Suitor was thinking. Poor Urban, put on the spot like that when the only thing he knows about the CFL is that the ball has pointy ends and stripes. What was Suitor expecting from him...a sudden encyclopaedic knowledge of a game and two football teams he earlier admitted to knowing nothing about?

I was actually hopeful that the XFL would find it's niche and be a developmental type league for the CFL and NFL. Unfortunately, every spring incarnation is just terrible football and very hard to watch. In America, I don't think you can half ass it when it comes to pro sports. You either start up as a farm league for the big show or you get cratered. Unlike the CFL, the 4 down game requires too much precision and doesn't allow for athleticism. There are a ton of fantastic athletes that just need some time to develop their pro game attention to detail but are NFL calibre athletes and that is how the CFL has thrived in it's recruitment. However, with the smaller field and different playing style and rules of 4 down football those same players just do not have the opportunity to shine and it just looks sloppy instead.

I'm against the weekending at this point too. However, if someone sets up residence for half the year at a lake house they paid half a million dollars for and is willing to self isolate for two weeks prior too, and after arriving, brings enough supplies to last that long, and is not in a cottage area that increases local populations by thousands I don't see the problem. For the majority..yes stay home...but there are situations that exist where people need to go and should not be shamed for doing so. I lease a condo from a friend for 7 mos of the year in Winnipeg while he snowbirds. Come May I'm homeless if I can't return home to Paint Lake. If he had come home instead of staying in Arizona I would have been at Paint Lake a month ago and there is very little anyone could say to convince me otherwise, as I am not a fan of homeless shelters.

I totally agree with you and Noeller on this. The vast majority of cottage country is weekend warriors and that is not necessary. However, like anything else there are resident "cottagers" like myself who live full time in their lake houses and may, like myself, run businesses in these communities. In these situations their livelihood is also at stake. This isn't frivolent travel. However, if I said I'm heading up to my lake house for the weekend to go ice fishing and then returning Monday I could certainly see why people would be upset by that. Also, places like LOTW, Whiteshell, Grand Beach etc. are talking about thousands of weekend warriors coming in that are not regular residents. That is not the way every place should be judged.

My lease fees, you don't pay land taxes in provincial parks and you don't own the land, is only 1700 bucks a year. My mortgage...that's a different ball of wax. Unlike most people my "cottage" is my primary residence though, and I just keep a condo in Winnipeg for the winter because the Thompson winters are just too damn tough on my arthritis.

There are responsible ways to do this. I have been self isolating for almost a month now because I can. I will be self isolating for two weeks prior to leaving, and for two weeks once I arrive there. Don't know why I'm even discussing this because I'm not going until the middle of May anyway but should the same restrictions be in place I will be making no extra trips or stops anywhere or along the way. A well thought out plan and diligence can limit the exposure to no one. I pay for my gas at the pumps. I pack my own food and bring it because Thompson is way too expensive to shop. I have a freezer full of food already there so I just need some pantry items and produce, the same as I would at home in Winnipeg. Beer? Wine? I make my own.

No grief. Just a bunch of people not understanding what the community of Paint Lake is, or how different a dynamic there is between it and what they are used to seeing in Southern Manitoba. They hear the word lake and think cottage, when nothing could be further from the truth. As you know, there are no weekend warriors at Paint Lake, there are residents of Thompson who live in the park close by. I'm not sure people understand that a Paint Lake residence is about 300k to start and requires a 20% down payment to finance. People are not buying or using these for weekend getaways. Nope...not much Daniel Boone in me. I like to fish and sit on my dock with a cooler of beer, and a nice camp fire after dark. In the winter I snowmobile and do the occasional ice fishing if it's warm...lol. I just prefer to live at the lake because of the lower taxes, and to get away from the social problems of Thompson.

Thompson is a city of 15000 people but is set up as the service hub for the North and directly services about 60k surrounding population.If anything is going to overwhelm our hospital, or supply chains, it's going to be the 60-70k in neighboring communities (mostly first nations) that receive primary hospital services and shopping in Thompson...it won't be the population of 200 people in the community of Paint Lake. Further to that, as explained earlier, Paint Lake is considered a community within the BRHA. These are not summer cottages. These are homes and the overwhelming majority of people live there full time and are included in any community planning by the regional health authorities. This is not Whiteshell or LOTW where people swing in for the weekend by the thousands. The only community that utilizes Paint Lake is Thompson. The people who are at the lake at any given time, whether camping or utilizing the park are Thompsonites. The people who have homes at the lake are Thompsonites.
