Odds and Sods - Game 6 - Bombers at Edmonton
Brandon Blue&Gold replied to do or die's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
Didn't help though. Eskies still lost that game and Reilly's offence was dead in the water at that point. But I get your point. Properly timed outbursts from a leader can help. Sometimes. -

I'd say the main issue with Krall to his motives is just not near enough information or development to his backstory and so many questions unanswered. I wonder if this was a byproduct of Pegg having to take over the script late in the game. I'm still impressed how well he pulled it off overall, but perhaps this is a result of the issues they had with getting the script done. In the end Krall/Edison is a shell of what he could have been. I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt on most of it. Question on Jaylah. I thought the movie established that her family died on the planet thanks to Krall. So maybe she has no family left hence her choice to start a new life in Starfleet would make sense. No point in searching for a family or home if it doesn't exist. -

It was never stated as I recall, I just inferred that Krall took on the characteristics of those he drained. I will admit the vampire angle was a little shallow and probably an unfortunate byproduct of the story having to keep him alive for 100 years. When they Franklin crashed did the movie actually state what shape the ship was in or how much of the crew actually survived? Perhaps a distress call couldn't be sent, none of the engineers survived the crash and they had no clue at first that they had gone through a wormhole or black hole or whatever ending up so far away. As for Krall's bitterness and possible mental issues, they probably only surfaced after the crash and festered nicely over the following century. Plenty of time to get a good rage on. He could have been just seen as a rigid yet competent military type when Starfleet made him a captain. The crash and stranding could be what made him snap. He's no Khan or General Chang, but Krall was more straightforward than Nero was, if nothing else. If they had a better reason for his extended life than "Blah I'm a space vampire!" he would be more compelling. And give Idris Elba (a damn fine actor) more to work with. -

I enjoyed it. Much better than Into Darkness and about as good (and more sensible) as 09 Star Trek. My only major beef was taking out the swarm with the Beastie Boys (I accept the theory just found it kinda cheesy). The action was good, the character interactions were enjoyable and the overall plot was solid albeit a little weak thanks to the villain and his "wmd". As for Krall himself I wasn't sold at all on him until the reveal that he was the Franklin's captain. That made his motivations much clearer to me. As a former MACO turned captain it would certainly make him see things in black and white terms. Which would explain why he felt betrayed by Starfleet and wanted revenge. As for the vampire thing, he would take on the characteristics of the person he sucked, which until the humans came along meant only aliens would have been available to him to feed on, hence his look. The more humans he fed on, the more human he began to look like. Works for me. As a Trek fan I've accepted goofier premises without blinking lol. Scotty fixing the ship with whatshername, sure why not. Just makes Scotty and her look more impressive rather than dump on the original Franklin crew imo. And Scotty does have more advanced knowledge of tech than whoever would have survived the Franklin crash. Anyways just a few of my thoughts. -

The Eye in the Sky official has been worse than useless so far this season. Unless that changes I don't want them handling reviews. Your other points are good. I would also like consistency in their reviews. One official's review of PI always seems to be different from the next game's official. The Hamilton game you'd get PI called after review for the lightest of contact, then the very next night they let go obvious PIs AFTER review. I know it'll never happen but I just want a consistent call from the officials both on and off the field. -

If by social mores you mean, for example, smoking in the car with kids or a pregnant lady smoking, driving home after "just a few" drinks, or perhaps disciplining your kids with spanking and/or the belt on a regular basis, then I can see your point about looking past Hull's flaws. Even the lack of help for alcoholics back then is a decent point. But multiple instances of felony assault and threatening his spouse with a shotgun wasn't something that could be overlooked in the 70s let alone now, and it certainly isn't a social mores issue. He should have gotten arrested and had his day in court. But I'll wager much like many athletes today it was overlooked and ignored because he was Bobby Hull. For his play Hull deserves the Jets HOF, and since it's been established a player's off ice activities don't affect his getting in or not Hull will get in. And he should. Amazing player who is a big reason why the NHL is here. But I think a lot of us have on our rose coloured glasses when it comes to Hull because he was one of ours. -

I'm well aware of Ty Cobb. And to your point about Terrell Owens, Pete Rose and BB.King's Alan Eagelson example it seems you only get excluded from your sport's HOF if your actions do direct harm to the sport you're involved with. I have yet to find an example of a worthy player/coach/executive being excluded or kicked out of a HOF for actual off ice/field activities, criminal or otherwise. The search continues... And Terrell Owens is recently removed from the game. It isn't odd that he hasn't been seriously considered for the HOF yet. -

Similar to Pete Rose in that both guys directly messed with the sport they were involved with. One guy kicked out of the HOF, the other denied entry for life. -

Here's a question related to this topic. Are there any examples of a hall of fame worthy player from any sports league whose off ice/field/court/etc actions have kept them out of their respective HOF? I don't count Pete Rose since his actions were done while he was active in MLB (as a manager). -

He beat his wives (not just one) on many occasions and was a trigger pull away from committing murder (or attempted, he could have missed). That is way beyond PC. If he wasn't a great pro athlete he would have been tossed in jail long ago or at least had his day in court. I get the point of separating the on ice stuff from the off ice stuff and Hull's career was amazing and was probably a big reason the NHL is here today. But I'm not going to forget what he's done off the ice. If that makes me a little darling, so be it. Put him in the Jets Hall of Fame, for his play he deserves it and he was never actually tried and convicted of a crime. Doesn't change the fact that as a human he's a Grade A POS. I guess I can hope he "was" a grade A pos, maybe he got counselling or found god or AA or whatever and made amends. It would be nice if the person could be as good as his game was. -
Saw the new Ghostbusters movie. Nothing earth shattering and the 3rd act is resolved too quickly and easily for my liking but other than that I enjoyed it. The cast was funny and nowhere near as annoying as the trailers painted them out to be. Good FX and the cameos were nice albeit brief, which is probably a good thing. Going by a ratings system I'd give it 2.5 out of 4 stars.

You don't miss Smith and Dressler? Collins looks good but give it a few games. See if he actually pans out. Also helps to have an actual QB in Durant playing. That's probably the main difference from last year.

If the Jets are serious about improving this season Peluso, Thorburn and Stuart have no place in the lineup. They're great guys don't doubt that but we have better players now. But I imagine "loyalty" will keep at least one of those guys in the lineup, unfortunately.

Well since we're reliving past glories... This play gives me equal parts joy and laughter. Joy at an amazing final play in Commonwealth of all places, and laughter at the Eskies for even letting it happen. Maciocia's deathstare at his DC after the play is just delightful.

A LHD or a very good forward. Craig Button's final draft listings... http://www.tsn.ca/craig-s-list-matthews-no-1-because-position-matters-1.503562 Not that I agree with all of his draft spots but there should be some impressive prospects both D and F available at #10. Of course this is hypothetical. I'd rather we keep Trouba. But an offensively skilled Dman like Barrie would be an asset to our PP and a top 10 pick as well? Nice consolation prize I'd say assuming we could sign Barrie long term. -

Captain America: Civil War - Spoiler Thread

Saw it yesterday. Loved it from start to finish. Was trying to think of any flaws that bugged me but so far I got nothing (I'm sure someone will come along and point out something that didn't occur to me lol). Liked how they did Cap's and Stark's POVs without much judgement either way. They both had good points and their stances fit perfectly with the characters they are (Cap's distrust of authority after the last movie along with Stark's guilt and continuing PTSD). Thought they nailed Spiderman to a tee, just perfect. And damn, Marisa Tomei's still got it! Loved seeing Giant-Man make his debut. Black Panther was fantastic, look forward to his movie. There were many other nice parts I enjoyed but I'll stop for now. I guess one minor complaint I have is that Crossbones was basically thrown away within the first ten minutes. Thought they could have used him more. Oh well a minor complaint. -
A more flattering review from Kirkland of Postmedia. Although I take it with a grain of salt since he puts Lawrence up on a pedestal in the opening headline... (not really a JLaw fan in these movies or maybe I just dig Romijn's take on Mystique more than hers) http://jam.canoe.com/Movies/Reviews/X/X_Men_Apocalypse/2016/05/09/22631472.html
