If I was the reporter in question, I wouldn't worry too much. Both the standards of reporting and the pay are very low. Slinging hamburger patties might pay better.

Russian Troops Given Holy Candles Not Battle Gear to Protect Them in Ukraine Russian draftees in the country’s Perm region have been given “protection candles” instead of much-needed equipment and told to light them in the heat of battle to “cast out evil spirits.” “This is some ******-up ****. I’m more and more astonished by these gags. They gave such candles to everyone in the squadron. What jackass is going to light this in battle, this candle of protection? They somehow can’t issue new uniforms or combat boots on time, but distributing candles is no problem,” one soldier told local outlet Perm 36,6. A photo he provided of one of the candles in question shows that it came with instructions featuring the Russian Orthodox cross and advice to “light the candle in battle” in order to dispel fear and make bullets “not scary.” The instructions also unironically featured the pro-war slogan, “We don’t abandon our own.” Other men called up to fight in Ukraine from the region also recently complained of being issued uniforms that smell “like they were pulled off corpses and given to us.” -Getty

If memory serves, this is the same politician who was exposed as lying about a lot of educational and work credentials, yet was re-elected.

History suggests that in such circumstances, the bump in popularity is usually short-lived. The Cons have a lot of accumulated mismanagement and stupidity to live down.

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu Promised to Give a Racist Security Minister His Own Government Militia To keep his far-right coalition together, Bibi’s giving Itamar Ben-Gvir control of the National Guard, which he’ll use as “combat police” to patrol Arab-Israeli areas.. Last November, the far-right neo-Kahanist Itamar Ben-Gvir helped deliver Benjamin Netanyahu’s election victory. Once a fringe fixture of Israel’s radical right, he is now the country’s minister of public security. Unlike the late Meir Kahane, his hero, Ben-Gvir walks the corridors of power. Like Kahane, however, he finds himself at the eye of a continuous political storm. On Monday, Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister, placed a temporary hold on his bid to degrade the country’s judiciary. To garner Ben-Gvir’s support, Netanyahu made a jarring concession that left critics seething and Ben-Gvir grinning—he would hand control of the National Guard (presently a unit of the Border Patrol) over to the ministry of national security, which is currently run by Ben-Gvir (the Border Patrol would then be subsumed into the reconstituted National Guard). That’s a ton of clout for any one person, particularly Ben-Gvir, who decades earlier was declared by Israel’s military as unfit to serve. In the end, Netanyahu may fail to honor his pledge. Funds might not be allocated. The government might fall. For the moment, however, the prospect of Ben-Gvir at the helm of a state-backed militia sets plenty of nerves on edge. “It could be very dangerous,” a senior police official told Ha’aretz. Earlier this week as throngs protested outside the Knesset, the unnamed official pondered whether “the minister would have sent companies from the National Guard to deal with the protesters, it looks bad.” (For the record, Kobi Shabtai, the police commissioner, opposes Ben-Gvir’s bid.) Ben-Gvir said the Guard would be focused on “extortion in areas with criminal organizations and ‘mixed’ cities,” which The Jerusalem Post said is “a clear implication of focusing on Israeli-Arab crime,” adding, “National guard members would be issued guns and be considered combat police.” Combat police under the control of a racist security minister, patrolling Arab neighborhoods. What could go wrong?

Bacterial ‘Syringe’ Could Lead to Brand New Cancer Therapies It should go without saying by now: You should get your shots. However, your traditional syringe only goes so far. Sometimes, it’s helpful to get an even more precise inoculation on a cellular level. This type of injection could help pave the way for new, more effective biomedical treatments like cancer and gene therapy. In a new study published Wednesday in the journal Nature, researchers developed a bacterial “syrigine” that’s capable of injecting proteins directly into cultured human and mouse cells. The technique utilizes the bacteria’s natural process of interacting with host cells to deliver a variety of different types of proteins into cells. The study’s authors, who hail from MIT, specifically modified a bacterial protein that’s more typically found targeting insects called the Photorhabdus virulence cassette (PVC), which is named for the bacterium Photorhabdus asymbiotica. While this bacteria is deadly for different species of insect larvae and used as a pesticide, it’s relatively harmless in humans. This latest study builds off of past research that found that PVCs can be used to target and deliver proteins into non-human cells. To develop the syringe, the researchers utilized AlphaFold, the powerful AI program from Google used to predict suitable protein structures. They then identified Photorhabdus—which typically targets insect cells—and re-engineered it in order to inject proteins into human cells in petri dishes. Kreitz et al. / Nature: “[We] demonstrated the application of PVCs as delivery tools in diverse contexts, such as in the specific killing of cancer cells or as mediators of genome editing, and we showed that the system operates as intended in insect cells, human cells, primary cells, and in live mice,” the authors wrote. They added that PVCs are a “versatile class of programmable protein delivery tools that are well-suited for use in a variety of applications ranging from biocontrol to human gene therapy.” To develop the syringe, the researchers utilized AlphaFold, the powerful AI program from Google used to predict suitable protein structures. They then identified Photorhabdus and re-engineered it in order to inject proteins into human cells in petri dishes. This suggests that it could one day be used to help deliver treatments directly into human cells. For example, proteins could be used as nanoscale carriers delivering antibodies into tumor cells. The beauty about PVCs is both how versatile and efficient it is. Not only can it be customized depending on the kind of cargo or treatment it’ll deliver, but the Nature study found that it can target human and mice cells with “efficiencies approaching 100 percent.”

Idaho Is About To Become The First State To Restrict Interstate Travel For Abortion -GETTY Idaho already has some of the most extreme abortion restrictions on the books, with nearly all abortions banned in the state and an affirmative defense law that essentially asserts any doctor who provides an abortion is guilty until proven innocent. And now Idaho Republicans have set their sights on hindering certain residents from traveling out of state to get an abortion. House Bill 242, which passed through the state House and is likely to move quickly through the Senate, seeks to limit minors’ ability to travel for abortion care without parental consent. The legislation would create a whole new crime — dubbed “abortion trafficking” — which is defined in the bill as an “adult who, with the intent to conceal an abortion from the parents or guardian of a pregnant, unemancipated minor, either procures an abortion … or obtains an abortion-inducing drug” for the minor. “Recruiting, harboring, or transporting the pregnant minor within this state commits the crime of abortion trafficking,” the legislation adds. Abortion trafficking would be a felony, and those found guilty would face two to five years in prison. The legislation also includes a statute allowing the Idaho attorney general to supersede any local prosecutor’s decision, pre-emptively thwarting any prosecutor who vows not to enforce such an extreme law. Since the bill would criminalize anyone transporting a pregnant minor within the state to get an abortion or to obtain medication abortion, it could apply to an aunt who drives a pregnant minor to the post office to pick up a package that includes abortion pills. Or it could target an older sibling who drives a pregnant minor to a friend’s house to self-manage an abortion at home. Either violation would carry a minimum sentence of two years in prison.

This tragedy, and the apathetic response by many US voters underscores yet again the utter and enduring fanatical insanity that is endemic there and will inevitably doom them. All we can do is hope that we will not be collateral damage.

The governor of Tennessee called for prayers without mentioning the mass shooting, so as to not offend the gun-nuts. However, Marjorie Taylor-Green had a pithy suggestion: Marjorie Taylor Greene Wants Biden To Give Up Secret Service Protection After Nashville School Shooting Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) called President Biden a fool and demanded that his Secret Service protection be given up after the Nashville school shooting. Rep. Greene’s solution to the nation’s epidemic of mass shootings is to give even more people easier access to guns. Greene attacked Biden for the existence of gun-free school zones because if there is one policy move that would definitely increase gun violence at schools it would be to end the gun-free school zone designation. How does taking away Biden’s Secret Service protection prevent mass shootings? It doesn’t, but it does create a distraction to take away from the record that Greene and Republicans have of making it easier for mass shooters to kill more people through increasing the availability of deadly firearms to all. https://www.politicususa.com/2023/03/27/marjorie-taylor-greene-biden-nashville.html
