  1. I've heard it said too many times that newcomers to Canada ought to assimilate into the dominant culture. This would explain why we are all wearing buckskin clothing and living in teepees.
  2. Blaikie. Ugh. Became a career politician. Like Judy Wazylicia-Leis & Steve Ashton. Couldn't stand the guy. God didn't give him a pension to sit for over 2 decades in the back benches in Ottawa but the people of Canada sure did. Unlike Mr. Harper.
  3. From Walters' reported comments, it sounds like he is leaning towards a wide receiver.
  4. I wonder how many folks setting up these churches share the same "to each their own" attitude as you? Call up a cowboy church and ask if they perform gay marriages? I have a pretty good idea what the answer will be... WTF does that have to do with anything? Call up a Chinese restaurant and ask them if they do fondue, if they don't should they be ridiculed on a football forum? Who's ridiculing? I think organized religion has done far more "evil" in the past 2000 years than it's done good. And the more extreme/peculiar the religion, the more hateful and intolerant they tend to be. That's my opinion, expressed respectfully on a football forum. Enjoy your Chinese food. I am a regular church goer and can readily concede that religions can do and have done wonderful things for humanity. That said, it has been reported that there have been more killing over religious differences (at least that was the excuse) than any other reason.About 20 years ago, the chief theologian for the Catholic church (Hans Kung) wondered out loud in an interview whether mankind would not have been better off without organized religion. Within 24 hours of the airing of the interview, he was demoted to a small parrish in France. Religion is not the problem. It happens when politics and religion get into bed together. QFT. Unfortunately since the dark ages that has almost exclusively been the case. Even in the recent history of Canada, atrocities such as Residential schools for natives are living proof that politics and religion are a terrible mix. What about Communism, the Holocaust or Ethnic Cleansing, none have anything to do with religion, it's always about politics. Ethnic cleansing frequently has to do with religion- see the Balkans and the current conflict in Palestine. It all comes down to tribalism- "us" and "other". The point is that whenever religion and politics get together, it frequently comes down to forcing one side to to accept the will of the other.
  5. That's why engineering firms, architects and contractors have insurance policies.
  6. Shea Emry is a slightly more talented Ejiro Kuale, with the right passport. He'll make a half decent play once in awhile, but totally blow it by then taking a 15 yard roughing penalty. But who are we going to designate as a target of bile for us?
  7. Not to excuse the horrors of the resedential schools here in Canada, but there are other examples of institutional abuse- google "The Maggies" or "the Magdalene laundries" for another eye opener. And that is not even bringing up the butterbox babies or the eradication of Liberation theology.
  8. You may want to brush up on your history, Residential schools punished native children for speaking their first languages, often with beatings, starvation, denials of medical and dental care, and frequent sexual abuse. At that time, natives were forbidden to wear regalia in public, perform traditional ceremonies, or even gather outside of reserves in groups of more than 2 at a time. Families were destroyed by children having little contact with their families in the formative years from 6 to 16. There were some kind and gentle people staffing the schools, but there were a lot of monsters as well. There is even evidence that disease-carrying blankets were handed out to native communities in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. You may also want to read the comments may by John A. McDonald about his plans for natives.
  9. Don't recall so much attention to Canadian players in the NFL scouting before. It's disheartening to see so many potential CFL stars being sucked up- I suspect that if Doug Brown was coming into the draft now, we would never see him in a CFL jersey.
  10. Lets look at the MTS privatization. Has anyone gotten better service since it was privatized? Filmon lied- in the election before he privatatized MTS, he personally promised he would not privatize it, and then he did it. He said that Manitoba could not afford to have a crown corporation help keep up with all the pending technology, but and here is where it gets interesting, the legislation to sell MTS specifically prevented SaskTel from buying MTS, and they were very interested. Same old stories-lying Tories

  12. As opposed to Sterling Lyon who referred to Manitoba women as "good breeders" and Filmon with his vote-rigging scandal? Or premier-hopeful Brian Pallister who calls non-Christians "infidels"?
  13. Some folks have short memories- there were problems with the Convention Center, the Concordia Hospital as only two examples. And yes, concrete can be poured in cold weather, provided that it is done properly- look at any residential building areas where house basements are poured in all but the coldest weather.
  14. And none of this is any sillier than Scientology or the Jedi church. And they are both official , yes official churches.
  15. I spent a year in Estevan called July and August in 1990. That town makes Honey Boo-Boo look like Stephen Hawking. I got a buddy who just moved there... Tattoo artist, of all careers.. I have to assume hes pretty much braindead by this point.. Then he's probably joined a cowboy church and is ready to vote for Brad Wall. "cowboy church" ? do tell. Since many Albertans are Texas wannabees, they tend to follow US fads. The "Cowboy Church" started in Texas and church goers are expected to dress as cowpersons and speak in supposed cowperson idioms, and the sermons are delivered in the same vernacular. The church now has branches in Sask and Alberta. Cowboy Church services are EXTREMELY serious stuff....they're in MB, too. Has nothing to do with "Texas Wannabees", and everything to do with the Western way of life, which is very much alive, especially out here in the foothills. Likewise, Cowboy Poetry is a very big deal... I have a very difficult time seeing a church where people have to dress up in costumes and pretend to speak like they are living in 1870 Dodge City as "serious". I would have the same reaction if a church sprang up where everyone was required to dress as pirates with eyepatches and parrots and speak with phrases like "aye matey", "arr" and "shiver me timbers".
  16. There may be bad news for Netflix fans. Bell bought the profitable CTV network, proceded to run it into deficits and now wants the CRTC to tax Netflix and give them the money to subsidize their bad decisions.

  18. BBB just ran an audit of what was wrong. PCs want audit to show who's to blame for what happened. I dislike witch hunts for witch hunts sake. We are in an election year federally and soon after, provincially, so the mud will start flying. Fear and smear.
  19. I always shake my head at people who think this is a "good" thing, and even more at people who think this is even remotely sustainable. You can't keep an economy going paying people not to work. It may defy your logic but Germany has been the healthiest economy in at least Europe for the past 25 years, even with all the costs of integrating East Germany into their economy.
  20. If you are young, well-paid, healthy and do not run into one of life's bad surprises, you do not need to be looked after by anyone. However, almost all of us are one phone call away from poverty or tragedy. Taxes, if used wisely, are like buying insurance on you, your home or car- you pay the installments and gripe, but hope you never need to call on the benefits. I would rather pay the taxes which subsidize those less fortunate and never draw on the payouts. Did you know that the rich in countries which have socialized medicine live longer than the equally rich in countries (like the US until lately) who do not? The difference is about 3 1/2 years, It would be safe to assume that the rich would have access to the same pay-for-service care in both cases yet the difference is there. We are our brothers' keepers, even if they annoy the heck out of us.
  21. Yes, Norway does tax its citizens at a high rate, but Norweigians get free dental care, fee eye care (including glasses), free psychological care, and two years of free post-secondary education for those who qualify. Moreover, Norwegians rate themselves a the third-happiest people on Earth (the Danes were #1) and as a measure of the health of their society, when neo-Nazi Anders Brevik (who killed 77 people including children) appeared in court, families of the slain appeared in court to ask that Brevik be given psychiatric help rather than a lifetime behind bars. That is a mark of a humane society. Wealth does not equal happiness or mental health. There is evidence to the contrary.

  23. "plight" is the wrong word. They play their cards right this could be a real good thing for Alberta in the long run. Hasn't worked in the past. Albertans keep re-electing them, and the best way to ensure bad behaviour continues is to reward it. again you say bad behaviour, but is it really? Us Albertans have a real low tax rate. Why should "good" behaviour from a government include taxing it's population up the ass? I'll say it again, there is a lot of spending required because of the massive population boom, they've been spending that money on the backs of the resource boom rather than taxing the population as heavily. Now that the boom has died down they are looking at increasing the tax load on the population. That seems like a sensible thing. I think too many Manitobans have the Stockholm Syndrome having had so many tax tax tax NDP governments. If you consider how Alberta has undetaxed the oil companies compared to Norway or even Alaska, the differences are staggering. You assume that high taxes are evil and lowest taxes are the most desirable, but I suggest you look at the examples of New Jersey and Kansas compared to the Nordic countries, Germany and France, to name a few. In the European examples, you have social stability, low crime rates, low infant mortality, and longer life spans. In these European countries, you not only have comprehensive health care, but in all but France, they have one-month vacations where the people get an extra month's pay during their vacations. In Kansas and New Jersey, the gospel has been slash all government spending and the economic climate in these two states has gotten so bleak that even the GOP rank and file has begun calling for restoration of services and raising of taxes. Canadians have consistently said in polls over the years that they would prefer higher taxes as opposed to lack of critical services. Compare that to King Ralph Klein who said his aim was to weaken government so much that he could "drown it in a bathtub" .
  24. Probably anal aperture issues.
  25. Much ado about nothing. I suppose that also applies to Saskatchewan.
