Bombers trade for QB Brian Brohm; cut Justin Goltz
gbill2004 replied to Mike's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
I checked out Brohm's college stats and he was very accurate, in the mid 60 percent completion range. NFL though, with a much smaller sample size, he's only 50 percent completion. Some scouts say he's a QB who needs to get into a rhythm to be effective, so maybe he just never found a comfort level in his few NFL appearances. -
Maybe Lewis could play middle linebacker for us.

Bombers trade for QB Brian Brohm; cut Justin Goltz

Another report on Brohm from 2008: 2008 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report: Brian Brohm, QB, Louisville Brohm is a coach's dream. He could've been the #1 pick last season before electing to return to college, so he's definitely pro-ready. What he's gained from being in a family of quarterbacks and by learning more under Bobby Petrino, Brohm has developed into the top quarterback prospect in the 2008 class. Some think he is a product of a pass-happy offense, but check him out on tape and you'll eat those words quickly. Brohm has all of the tools to be a franchise quarterback. He has the size and the big arm to go with it. More importantly, he knows how to use it. Whether it is to throw a bullet over the middle, a fade route to the corner, or the home run ball. He won't scramble for twenty yards, but he can move well enough and can get you a rushing touchdown or two. On top of his physical skills are his football knowledge and his headiness, so he makes few mistakes and he's willing to learn and get better. There is one knock on him. Durability may be a concern, as he had injury problems in 2005 and 2006, though he has rebounded from his injuries well. Overall, despite the potential injury concerns, Brohm's makeup makes him a can't miss prospect, because whoever drafts him won't have him on the pine for long. Update (11/28/07): Despite Louisville's sub-par season, Brohm has still persevered and had a big year (3,787 yards, 29 touchdowns), though he has had a few un-Brohm-like games --- including completing less than 50% of his passes and throwing three interceptions in a 55-17 loss to South Florida in the Cardinals' last game. Some of his struggles, however, can be attributed to having to play from behind often. There is one bright spot in this year for Brohm - if he knows how to spin it the right way. He's been used to winning his entire career and now he's in unfamiliar territory, on a losing team. This kind of adversity can help prepare him for his first couple of seasons as an NFL quarterback. He has remained healthy and he has kept his status as the top QB on the board, ahead of Andre' Woodson and Matt Ryan. He's already proved his worth and even though his choice to return for his senior season may not look as good now as it did at first, it won't hurt him severely on draft day, as he'll be off the board very, very quickly. Update (12/27/07): Brohm's senior season ended without a bowl game, as the Cardinals finished 6-6 overall and 3-5 in the Big East. But, he went out as best as he could (given the way the year went), as he led Louisville back from a 35-17 third-quarter deficit against Rutgers to a last-minute 41-38 victory in his final home game in the season finale on Nov. 29. He was 12 of 22 for 237 yards and one touchdown and ran for another, to finish the season with 4,024 yards and 30 touchdowns passing (with 12 INTs) and three rushing touchdowns. In his career, Brohm threw for 10,775 yards and 71 touchdowns (24 INTs) and he also ran for nine scores. Despite the way that things turned out and equaling his three-year interception numbers in one season, Brohm stayed healthy and he (nor his team) ever gave up, as he led the Cardinals to last-minute wins over Rutgers and Pittsburgh and a second-half comeback win over Cincinnati (falling just short in several other games -- four losses by a touchdown or less). He came into his senior season as the top QB on the draft board, but with Matt and Andre' Woodson having excellent seasons, both have inched past him in several draft rankings and mock drafts. But, we could see three quarterbacks going in the top 10 in the draft and Brohm will be one of them, whether it's as the first, second, or third picked. Update (2/26/08): Brohm had one of the best days of the quarterbacks at the combine on Sunday and solidified his place as at least the #2 QB in the draft, while keeping himself in the running to be the first signal-caller taken in April. Brohm ran a solid 4.83 40 and was one of the top performers in a few other drills as well. In the throwing drills, he was extremely accurate, which was a plus considering that Chad Henne and Joe Flacco had their struggles in that department. -
McAdoo is the OC.

Bombers trade for QB Brian Brohm; cut Justin Goltz
gbill2004 replied to Mike's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
Not if he becomes the #1 QB. True. I wonder how many games he'd have to start for it to become a 2nd rounder. But I'd almost rather give up a 2nd rounder for Kevin Glenn, who likely could be had for that or less. -

The conditional trade is a 2nd - 4th round 2015 draft pick, depending on Brohm's playing time. Seems kind of steep. -

My guess is Goltz was making more than $100,000 per season last year. -

Here's a 2008 scouting report on Brohm: Strengths: Played in a pro-style offense in his first three years under Bobby Petrino…Places the ball well for his receivers in stride setting up the yards after carry…Accurate with the football…Senses pressure and can escape from the pocket when he has to…Makes smart decisions with the football and has the stats to back that up…Has a good; not great arm...Should be a great fit into a West Coast offense. Weaknesses: Louisville’s line makes Brohm look like a better QB than a he really is…Rutgers’ defense exploited that he breaks down under pressure (which he never really faces)…Tends to overthrow receivers in the intermediate (10-20 yards) passing game…Doesn’t have a powerful arm…Is he a product of Petrino’s system like Dave Ragone and Chris Redman? Thoughts: Personally, I think Brohm is overrated by the media (ESPN in particular)…He plays in an offense with a tremendous amount of talent against really weak Big East defenses, so I don’t think he is as good as he actually looks…Hunter Cantwell replaced Brohm and put up the same statistics, so what does that say about Brohm?…Would have been the third QB chosen and in 2007, and I don’t understand why he came back for his senior year…Despite all this negativity, I currently have Brohm rated as the No. 2 QB in the country. Player Comparison: Marc Bulger. -
The 2 guys they seem to be looking at from this camp appear to be shorter return guys, like Woods.

All the "nipple" talk in the other thread has some people overly sensitive
-
Your 3rd QB should be your developmental guy. The QB who you are grooming to possible take over as the starter in a few years. It all depends if O'Shea/Bellefeuille think Goltz is that guy. My bet says Goltz gets cut in TC for a new guy McManus brings in.

Chronic foot problems. His career likely over.

From the Feb 27 Calgary Sun: It’s been more than three months since the Saskatchewan Roughriders battled the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the 2013 Grey Cup. The battle that takes place over the next three months, however, will be just as important. With the current collective bargaining agreement set to expire the day before training camps open in May, the CFLPA and CFL owners are set to begin negotiations in earnest March 6-7 at the Delta Calgary Airport Hotel. The two sides exchanged initial proposals earlier this month. “I don’t think it was pleasing to anyone,” said CFL veteran Keon Raymond, who is one of two Calgary Stampeders player reps, along with fullback Rob Cote. When the two sides meet face to face next week, Raymond is expecting opinions to be aired. “I think we expect it to be a little rowdy,” Raymond said. “(The owners) are going to come with a lot of minimal, but it’s the beginning of the negotiations, and when you have a lot of money on the line and guys fighting for something, it’s going to be tough. “We definitely have to stick together and be unified as one.” The most contentious issue will be how the monetary pie is divvied up, as it’s expected the CFLPA will want to see the league’s $4.4-million salary cap increase significantly. A new five-year TV rights deal with TSN and RDS worth a reported $43-million was signed last year, which is worth approximately 21/2 times more than the previous deal and is expected to more than double what CFL franchises pull in on the TV side to $4.3 million. “It factors in a ton, knowing it’s almost two or three times more than what it was the last time,” Raymond said. “We feel like the league is doing a great job and, obviously, there’s no league without the players, but the fans are the most important thing, as well. This is entertainment, and I think we’ve given them a great product to put on the field. “You definitely want to be compensated for the things that you put your body into. “I don’t know if the owners really understand the type of physical punishment we put our bodies through.” New stadiums and increasing viewership and interest in the CFL around the country have the players asking, what about us? “It just kind of seems like everybody is kind of reaping the benefits except for the guys that are putting in the work,” Raymond said. The last time around, a new CBA was signed on the final day before training camps opened in 2010. “We have a great amount of respect between our two organizations,” CFL commissioner Mark Cohon said at the annual state of the league address during Grey Cup in Regina back in November. “We have a good working relationship, we’re very transparent in terms of them understanding our businesses, our challenges, the opportunities ... We must remain prudent and smart about our business.”

Bombers name Gene Dahlquist as new QB coach

Friesen can't be serious, can he? @friesensunmedia: I agree 100%. Any QB coach is better than no QB coach. But wasn't someone like, say, Mike Kelly, available? #bombers -
Eskimos release Alexander (Now Signed with the Bombers)

Why all the discussion about Buck's leadership qualities in a thread about Donovan Alexander? -
I agree. I prefer a guy who consistently gets 5 yards per carry and minimal long runs vs a guy who goes for 1, 2, 1, 1, 3, 1, 40, even though their average YPC look the same. It's much easier to convert on 2nd and 5, compared to 2nd and 8.

Another great read. JBR, can you please explain what a "three-technique" means? You refer to that term a few times, in different contexts, in your blog. Are there others, for example, a two or four technique?
