  1. All 7 of them are fantastic. hashtaghockeyplayerjokes
  2. That is taking all the context out of the situation. With the expansion draft and Pavelec's contract ending, creating a typical scenario where Hellebuyck beats out the established vet and proves himself along the way wasn't going to happen. They were not overestimating his value, they were assessing it. Hellebuyck was ready to be tested as the #1 goalie. Just because he didn't show any signs of being an elite goalie doesn't mean he wasn't ready to step into the #1 goalie spot. Kari Lehtonin has been a #1 goalie for almost a decade and has never been elite. I wouldn't call him any better or worse than what Hellebuyck showed this year. Chevy started the year without a #1 but definitely hoped and expected that Hellebuyck would beat out Hutchinson. With the expansion draft at the end of this season and Pavelec in the last year of his contract, the Jets decided to find out how Hellebuyck could do in a full season. The reason for doing it this way was simple - by the end of the year they would know whether or not they needed to adjust the plan. If they brought another keeper in then they 1) have to expose him or Hellebuyck to Vegas at the end of the season, and 2) still don't have a clear answer on where Hellebuyck is in his development. The Jets have two goalies in the system that they think are NHL caliber in Hellebuyck and Comrie, possibly three if Phillips continues to progress. But they don't know if they are until they increase their exposure to all situations. So now what? The Jets can protect Hellebuyck, expose Hutchinson and give Pavelec a nice gift basket on his way out. If Vegas takes Hutchinson over one of our forwards and the many far more qualified goalies on other teams, they're nuts, but maybe. More likely the Jets pick between the following two choices in the offseason: 1) call up Comrie and fully commit to the youth movement with a "may the best man win" competition between their two best prospects, or 2) sign a free agent goalie and have Hellebuyck compete against him for the top spot. While most will want the Jets to pick that second option, finding a goalie who wants to come here and be in that situation won't be easy. I'd love the Jets to sign Darling to a 3 or 4 year deal for a reasonable salary and have him battle Hellebuyck, but why would Darling want to do that? He's been stuck behind Crawford for years waiting for this opportunity to be a #1 - he's going to go to the best place to do that, not one where he's supposed to be pushing the guy management really wants. He's going to want a 6 year deal, not to be a placeholder who has a contract that makes him easy to get rid of. Trade for Fleury? He has 2 years left after this season. Problem there is if Vegas can take him (no NMC) they will. So the results are inconclusive, which sucks. Hellebuyck hasn't shown himself to be a great goalie, but he also hasn't shown that he can't be a great goalie. Never going to be a great goalie is a file we can safely put Hutchinson and Pavelec in. I'm not going there with Hellebuyck yet and I'm guessing neither are the Jets.
  3. Hank Ilesic can probably throw a spiral. Or just punt them to the receivers.
  4. If there's one thing I've learned from being on the internet, it's that rational responses have no effect on irrational people. If there's two things I've learned from being on the internet, it's that ****** ************* while **** ****** in the ******* **** ****** isn't all it's cracked up to be.
  5. No. In 2017 he is as worthwhile a signing as Casey Printers would be. That's another guy who was the bees knees a decade ago. It's a no risk pickup because the only tangible cost to them is a roster spot. If you believe the part about no signing bonus, which is tough. On the intangible side, the Young signing is high embarrassment/low dignity.
  6. 2017 & Vince Young. If any part of your QB plan includes that, sane is not the go-to word.
  7. And by using "encapsulate" in a post I realize I have waived all rights to not be punched in the junk.
  8. There were more accurate ways to word it. Taylor is stretching the application of this information beyond what is useful for, and then portraying that number to represent an objective fact about Maher's quality as a kicker. At most what he should draw from it is that Maher's 82% doesn't fully encapsulate his upside as a kicker.
  9. Does Maher having the "7th best FG kicking season" in the last decade pass the sniff test for you? It's a real stat in the sense that numbers are used to create other numbers. Going deeper in analysis doesn't always give a clearer picture; sometimes it distracts from what matters most. He had success making long field goals last season. He also had a 67.6% conversion rate in Ottawa for a CFL career percentage of 75.8. I don't share Taylor's surprise that Hamilton might not view Maher as their forever kicker.
  10. While I enjoy Taylor's attempts to bring greater statistical analysis to the CFL, it might be time to point out to him that "Points Above Expected" isn't a real stat, and Maher's 82% FG accuracy made him the 6th best kicker in a 9 team league last season. 8th best if you want to include McCallum and Early.
  11. Blown away would not describe my reaction. As I haven't ever seen a single play involving Cam Walker, or at least one where something significant involving Cam Walker happened, comparing players to him doesn't offer me any insight. I would have said that and probably comparing where they are in their development at the time of their drafting. If not, comparing McGough to Walker becomes an even more useless exercise.
  12. On one hand I can appreciate that he isn't just throwing out hype and creating unrealistic expectations, but on the other hand, I expected to recognize all of the names he was comparing players to. So you're telling me Connor McGough could be the next Cameron Walker? I don't know what to do with that information.
  13. Only 500k is for being both a coach and GM. The extra 250k is for being a deity.
  14. The only reason the Jets have money is because they didn't spend it? Capology!
  15. I know the Riders have a brand new stadium they are excited to unveil, but with this newest development, will the strain on concessions be too much?
  16. The CFL minimum salary is $52,000 per year. Unless a player has a special deal in place, he will make $13,500 spending an entire regular season on the practise roster. Yep, those guys owe us... (so much sarcasm)
  17. I agree, but the NFL seems to have shifted it's attitude from it's not worth the trip to Canada to making sure no player slips thru the cracks, so a post-draft contract offer and a trip to a training camp would fit with what they've been doing lately.
  18. Yeah, that's too much money. For us at least. Good on Steele for getting a deal like that.
  19. Exactly the opposite - I have no knowledge of any of these players beyond the casual rabid CFL fan which is why I'm not going to declare any high-ranking prospect as a bad pick at #1. Y'know, that thing you keep doing - taking generic knowledge available on the internet and using it make bold intractable declarations about players. No one had compared Vandervoort to Fantuz until you insisted on doing it; JBR used Fantuz to illustrate a point about drafting in general.
  20. We start a NI receiver. Why would we out-of-hand dismiss drafting a potentially much better NI receiver when it's over a month before the combine? Which are all things that are more likely to still be available at #6 than a starting WR. So once again, how would you know? How amount of time have you spent scouting Vandervoort?
  21. How would you know? What amount of time have you spent scouting Vandervoort? You are forming opinions based on very little information and declaring them as absolutes. And then shouting people down with them. The potential talent and value of most of these players won't have real clarity until after the combine when hopefully the best offensive players can line up 1-on-1 against the best defensive players. Since neither of us will be there, we can take turns regurgitating Duane Forde's opinion afterward.
