Every season I start off feeling hopeful (that is my right), but this year hopeful is in the rear view mirror. Optimism is driving the bus now. I took a look at the roster last week. Combine that with the draft picks and there is plenty of reason to think this team should be able to put up W's. If Willy stays relatively healthy my expectation right now is 11 wins this year as the starting point.

The timing blows, but if it had happened a few months ago I'd say good for him. Considering that head coaching jobs in the CIS seem like tenured positions, I can understand the move, and McMaster has a pretty good program. It would have been nice if they had figured this all out in January.

^ Pretty much that. There were a few choices that seemed a bit Joe Mack-ish. Who knows. Time will tell.

? I'm simply acknowledging that it is a normal practise to speak very highly of the players you just drafted. That wasn't meant to imply an agenda. I'd expect it from any decent GM. That is how they should conduct themselves. It's okay to say nice things about other people. Even if the internet is desperately trying to get us all to behave otherwise. My commentary on Walters' picks has been 100% praise and 0% criticism. It can be found on page 2. And that last year, Waggoner got even more post-draft praise than Loffler got this year.

Loffler's just getting the standard post-draft tire pumping from Walters. I'm pretty sure Waggoner got far more psi blown up his wazoo last year. More likely Walters wanted to keep the topic on this crop of draft picks, rather than playing the "where would Waggoner have been drafted" game.

The best reasoning I've heard on Waggoner is that his value was higher last year because there were no defensive players of his level in that draft class. This year there were a few, so he probably drops some just because teams can get a player of his calibre who plays DL and DB. And then there's Singleton. So it's not that there was anything wrong with the choice, just now there were more choices. And we got him a year early. So from the first 20 picks in the draft, we have Waggoner, Corney, Couture and Loffler to show for it. That is an excellent haul. One person's opinion.

Did a little dance with space baby when I found out we drafted Corney. I don't know anything about the two linebackers we picked, so whatever, I'll just leave that alone. As for the others, I love those picks. For the players we got and the picks we got them at, it screams huge value and a ton of upside. Three guys who could, probably should start someday, another two who might have that potential and certainly will rotate in for snaps or serve as backups, two LBs who at worst should be contributing on teams, and a local kid. Seems like we made the most of what we had for opportunities. Dear Mr. Onyemata, until we acquire your rights, please stay in the NFL. Respectfully yours, mbrg.

Given that training camp hasn't started yet, the most reasonable explanation to me would be that Jernigan knows his family situation is such that he won't be back before camp. The Bombers want to bring in another player in the meantime but can't because Jernigan is still under contract (and they want to keep him that way), so they're at their limit even if it doesn't work for him to show up right away. Can't suspend him for not reporting because their is nothing to report to at the moment. Injury lists don't exist for about another month. So they put him on the retired list just to have him somewhere, and in the meantime they'll probably bring another 75th player in for camp. The other options would be releasing him or only having 74 counters in camp. This might be the only shell game they can play with Jernigan to avoid those.

Do them in pairs. Like loading the ark. One from the olden days and one from newer times. Rigney and Walby at the same ceremony.

Cause you can draft another really talented forward and eventually trade some of your assets for a defenceman. Or sign one in free agency if that's the only missing piece.

They'll be disappointed with the answer. It's genetics.

My draft day wishlist: 1) If David O. is still available after 27 picks have been made, we use pick number 28 on him. 2) None of our picks in the first 3 rounds is used on a useless receiver because he might be "good on teams". Go for the brass ring Walters. Potential starters. Potential rotation players. No Anthony Smith types until at least the 5th round. That is all. It's not like I've scouted these guys.
