  1. NFL GM's are not immune to odd decisions. But I would tend to agree that it seems quite unlikely. Kyle Orton got to be a starter this year after retiring. No, the odds are not in Brohm's favour, but all he needs is one guy to advocate for him, an old college coach now part of a NFL staff or something like that, and he's got a foot in the door. I think a foot in the door is all he's hoping for at this point. In a world where Michael Bishop gets a phone call on a Tuesday in Texas after 4 weeks of CFL football have been played, signs, arrives in Winnipeg on Wednesday, has 1 practise on Thursday and 1 walk-thru that Friday and then starts Saturday afternoon in Toronto, Brohm getting a tryout with a NFL team is not outside the realm of possibilities.
  2. Do you think Brohm will be back? I believe they want him back but Ottawa might show interest, possibly BC as well. Brohm is trying to land an NFL gig. If that doesn't work out I coukd see BC amongst other teams showing interest. I have a feeling he won't be back with the Bombers, which is too bad because he really impressed me. Oh really? I hadn't heard that (NFL). I'd heard a murmur that he would explore that route, but I might have just heard it from Gbill. I'd also like a longer look at him; he did a lot of things right with his opportunity. And Willy is the starter. Why on earth would any rational person expect otherwise? If he struggles for an extended period others will get opportunities. Just like every other football team ever.
  3. Well I agree with Vanstone that this was all done in an odd and unnecessary manner. Most likely Chamblin thought Benevides as DC was a slam dunk, and he painted himself into a corner because of it. Quick may still be a good hire, but I have no idea why play-calling duties need to be withheld/transitioned/split/whatever the arrangement will evolve into. Quick has CFL experience and it's freaking January. This isn't like the Crowton hire. Quick shouldn't need his hand held by Chamblin, and he has 5 months to figure out how he wants to handle his new job and what it entails. So yeah, this is all a bit odd. But odd doesn't automatically equate bad.
  4. Stubler (I think) said the whole concept of "half-time adjustments" was something coaches made up for half-time TV interviews.
  5. It is my preference to formulate strongly-held opinions with as little real information as possible, including who the Bombers ABSOLUTELY WITHOUT EXCEPTION MUST DRAFT AT NUMBER TWO OR THEY ARE RUINING THE FRANCHISE!!! (trademark pending), and will vehemently shout down anyone who offers an opinion contrary to mine, so if you don't mind, your so-called "knowlege" has no place here. Harumph.
  6. Is that a thing now? Kids these days and their social media... I blame Obama
  7. Jacquie, my thoughts exactly. Makes more sense to me than most of his posts. Who's Judy? Who isn't Judy?
  8. The previous couple of obviously goober posts notwithstanding there was overtones of "sky is falling.." in some of them.. Duh. It's January. It's called snow. Some people...
  9. Jacquie, my thoughts exactly. Makes more sense to me than most of his posts.
  10. First off, what happened to make Mehdi Abdesmad drop out of the top 20 rankings from September to now? 9th to gone is a pretty steep drop. That is the current consensus, just because it's easy to connect the dots. He's from Ottawa, he's going to be a free agent, Desjardins likes to try and outbid everyone, Holmes sounds like he'll go where the money is. That doesn't make it so, but people like to make forecasts and the chances of being right are higher with this FA than most others. Most of the time predictions for free agency is just throwing darts with a blindfold on, so a solid 30% chance is the same as 100% to some people. No one knows right now, except maybe for Holmes' agent. Chungh is where Dunk lost me. Just seems like there are a half-dozen better fits than that one. Also, predicting the first 2 picks of the 2014 draft is not much of a claim to fame. I think most CFL fans got those 2 right. I don't like the idea of taking a guy just because we're desperate to find ratio breakers, but if he looks like he has the potential to be a solid starter, I'd lean that way too. There's a limit to how many players can be in the pipeline for any one position. I don't expect anyone taken in 2015 to be ready to start for 2015, at least not right away, so 3 of the 6 we have now (plus any FA's picked up along the way) are still more likely to start in my mind than any guard taken in the draft, even if it's at the 2 spot. History doesn't have a long list of first year starters. The best available at that second spot may very well be a tackle. The list of pros on Groulx sounds pretty long, the list of cons sounds short. There will be imports at tackle regardless of whether or not we draft Groulx. Almost no chance he comes out of CIS ready to face the Odell Willis' of the world in week 1. NI talent at the tackle position exists, otherwise Heenan and the rest would not be trusted by their respective teams at those spots. They'd be playing guard instead. The Bombers need to identify if Groulx has the goods. If they think he does, draft him. Starting guards show up in every draft class. Starting tackles do not. Passing on one just because we have a sour taste in our mouths from last season is not sound decision making.
  11. The root of that play was Perreault's bad decision to pass the puck back into our end 25 seconds prior, rather than push it forward. I cringed when I saw him do that. Anaheim had just changed and had 2 guys already pushing hard on the forecheck. Retaining possession is great when you're carrying the play, not when you're totally under seige. The guys played hot potato with the puck as the Ducks swarmed them, made 3 more passes under heavy duress deep in our end, and almost got it over the blue line before it came back in again, got the puck back again only to finally give it away. 25 seconds prior Perreault had the puck 10 feet from our blue line with one guy coming towards him and decided to not chip it off the boards. We never had a chance as good as that one to clear our zone in the 25 seconds that followed. That tiny amount of pressure was the least any Jet had in their face for the rest of that shift. Sometimes "make the puck go that way" should be the only thought that matters.
  12. On the whole this thread dabbled in lunacy, but there is an obviously sarcastic point I've been pondering non-sarcastically for a few days now. Obviously not going to happen, but that very thought wandered into my head prior to the Coyotes game - Hutch to Arizona for their first round pick. Smith has been useless this year and Hutch's value will likely never be higher than it is now. Arizona is on the fringe of the McDavid race but not outright in the thick of it. A first round pick is likely beyond Hutchinson's value, but plenty of bad trades happen in sports every year and someone benefits from them. Why not us? While I normally think we're better off hanging on to our best players, long term isn't so long term anymore, and Hellebuyck could be making the same push by the end of this season as Hutch made last season, and Comrie is not that far away anymore either. We might not be able to keep both those guys long term if they continue to progress into the quality starters that they so far appear to be on track to becoming, and keeping Hutchinson, Hellebuyck and Comrie just won't happen. There's no rush to do anything, but in terms of moving a player while his value is highest? That time might be right now. If I were Chevy I'd at least give Maloney a hey how ya doing, in the market for a goalie? kinda call. You never know what we might get in return.
  13. That's a terrible idea. We can't risk giving them superpowers.
  14. I’m not saying I necessarily disagree with what you wrote, but it is interesting how you say that Pavelec played well last night, but he is consistently underperforming for the season and that his save percentage is an indication of that. His save percentage last night was .867, which is obviously not good enough. So then, did he really play well last night? I was curling last night and watched the game in the lounge after so wasn't paying the closest attention to it. He made some big saves after the first two power play goals, but were the goals he did let in weak? Or was the team just playing really poor defense around him? Looking strictly at the numbers over the last couple of months, Hutch is severely outplaying Pavelec in both save percentage and wins. I only saw one goal, the last one. Boedker came down the right side with some speed, cut thru the crease and put it in the far side. Some might claim the goalie should have had that one. I've seen that save made before. To do it, the goalie has to commit and push hard and throw himself to the other side. Pavelec didn't do that. Instead he protected the near post, then moved across with control to keep the 5 hole closed. I'm guessing he thought his two defencemen would help him out at some point, since they were totally unoccupied, but they did not. Didn't lay a hand on Boedker. Must be getting close to Valentine's day. In other words, I suspect Pavelec plays it differently if he is on his own, maybe goes with a poke check or the big slide across, but he does neither because he thinks he is not alone. Maybe the defencemen whispered "april fools" after. As for the other 3 goals, I walked past the TV during the first intermission and Hnidy said it would have been 4-0 for the Coyotes if it wasn't for Pavelec, and I'm under the impression that the third goal was scored on a 5 on 3. So Pavelec might have been one of the best Jets out on the ice last night, but I didn't see enough of the game to know if that is true or not.
  15. Why on earth would he bother? At least by the end of February some free agents will shuffle around and have been signed and the needs of teams will be a bit clearer.
  16. Has 2 first names - can't trust him. People like that are the devil.
  17. Neufeld plays guard and tackle, Goossen played all 5 spots on the line in college. We have some flexibility on our roster right now. Bring in one more NI on the line and Morley becomes very expendable. I think it'd be an okay decision. Both are nice guys, but too mellow. I still think keeping Morley around as a 6th or 7th OL would be smart, with all the injuries the past few years on the OL. Morley is Canadian, reliable and versatile. I don't get that argument about January. He was the only guy who would do anything when something would happen to our qb. I can't think of any Bomber Olineman who has played with more burr under the saddle than January since...Picard's first stint? Brandon Dyson? January is not making any friends out there.
  18. And I give myself frequent lobotomies, so it's all good. Nothing to see here.
  19. Get's a like for the phase "truculent grinders". I've got to learn an instrument so I can start a band and name it that. Your old married and have a kid.... Good luck with that band idea tho...... LMAO. Ever watch "The Partridge Family" Mud?
  20. dickish but there's been questions about Kessel in that regard before. He was afterall traded from Boston because they felt he wasn't fitting in, this is now the 2nd coach he's seen fired in Toronto. I think given that teams recent history and the lightning rod of being the teams star player you gotta expect questions to be asked like that. Questions like that, sure. But there's other ways of asking it. Why was it asked this way? Because the dickish reporter was trying to get that kind of reaction from Kessel. Not some reaction. That reaction.
  21. Ooops. That seems like a nowthecatsouttathebag tweet.
  22. Official Feed ‏@CFL 50m 50 minutes ago .@RickMoffat reporting that SJ Green has rejected a contract offer from the @MTLAlouettes. #CFLFA15 I wouldn't go after him, Let Ottawa overpay. That's not the first place I'd spend the money, but if we don't get the guys we want, I'm not sneezing at the idea of giving Willy a receiving corps that consists of Denmark, Moore and Green. That instantly becomes the best combo of receivers in the league.
  23. I believe he would have been credited with a 25 yard penalty for being ejected. In reality the net was zero yards as the penalty was offset by the Rider ejection. Leading in penalties. Is that number of infractions or yardage?
  24. "Wait a second, be right back..." - Jim Popp, walking out of his office with a tire iron in hand.
  25. That came out of nowhere. Wow. Best of luck to him going forward. What a lousy way to go out. Back to back season ending injuries. Hope he has better luck in the football afterlife.
