Will Streveler Be Our James Franklin?
USABomberfan replied to USABomberfan's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
Even though Ross is getting his chances and doing a little better tonight, I still think any slight play better by Streveler and I'd start our rookie against Edmonton next week. -
FMB is just awful and makes me miss Renaud
-
Ross (aside from sack fumble) looks just slightly better this game, but I still think Streveler will outplay him and be our temporary No. 1 until Nichols returns.

Hamilton shopping Vernon Adams

Problem with Willy is he's had trouble hanging onto the ball too long and he got beat out by Nichols for lacking the kind of decisiveness that Matty Ice and Streveler (thus far) seem to have. I get that it's now been a couple years, but he didn't seem to adjust too well out of the Bellefeuille offense into the Lapo offense. As was brought up, if Edmonton feels Adams (should they land him) is adequate enough to backup Reilly and they're sold on O'Brien as well, it's possible they might be willing to part with Glenn. Certainly wouldn't mind renting Glenn for a year if it means we can hold off on throwing Streveler into the fire until he fully learns Lapo's playbook. Otherwise, I say we go with the rookie. -

Tonight will be huge for Streveler for sure. Season is already an uphill climb and we probably won't be able to lift a proven veteran in here barring Edmonton being willing to part with Glenn or Hamilton willing to look our way in the Adams trade. But if we're out of the mix on either of those, I gotta think Streveler will be our relief pitcher turned temporary starter. So long as Nichols isn't out more than 6 weeks, if Streve can win even half of those games, we're in good shape. I definitely think it's put up good numbers or be demoted for Ross tonight. -

Well, you know how it is with us bomber fans. Reminisce reigns supreme around here lol. But for real, I don't think anyone's worried about the wrongs of the Mack regime anymore other than hoping now that Streveler really is the homegrown gem that he appears to be, and that this time we don't throw that talent away unnecessarily. -

True, but you have to have consistent coaching to get consistency out of a QB. Having a revolving door of them like we did in Elliott's day, or like the current Montreal Alouette gong show will lead to bad developed QBs. I mean, the way things are going in that city today, there's no way a young Calvillo would ever be able to get his decorated career even started, and same probably would have befallen him in Elliott's shoes too. -

Well shafted isn't necessarily what happens all the time. You might have a case like Robert Marve where he didn't get shafted per se, but it was still one of those cases where when he first got here you had the fan base excited about him only to see it not work out. Hell I remember some fans were saying at the time they wanted him to start over Willy. As to Elliott shafted, well yes and no. The bigger problem was at the time Brink, Elliott, Goltz and then Hall were here we had 3 different offensive coordinators in 3 years, 2 of which were putrid. You definitely are not going to develop a QB under that circumstance. So ... whether or not anyone got shafted in that situation is kinda a moot point. Our club though has had a reputation for not being patient with QBs we find who get drafted/signed without having had any development with another team. But assuming we won't be losing significant coaches on our offensive staff like Lapolice or Pierce, I think Streveler just might be the next Trevor Harris, only better than the Harris we saw last year. -
Our WR corps was troubled after Thorpe got cut plus Adams being gone in the second half of the season and Dressler also missing time. I expect we'll have a lot more options down the field this season with Bowman in our lineup, and I'd bet Lapolice has a plan not to wear Harris out too much.

Pretty sure that is not the case, and being a CFL rookie does not eliminate you from being 2nd in line in the backup QB spot. I probably wouldn't ever make a rookie QB the number 1 guy, but that's not what is going on here. Behind Nichols, everyone is unproven IMO when it comes to CFL action, and barring Edmonton releasing/trading Glenn during the season, or some other proven backup QB lateral move, we aren't likely to have QB on our roster outside the backup crew we already have. Hopefully Nichols stays uninjured all season. But if we did have to call in the backup, I'd have no problem with him being a rookie, especially if he gets Lapo's playbook. -

Maybe, but the number 2 QB spot should not, and I hope will not be handed to Ross on a silver platter. Just cuz he has 1 year in the league already does not mean the job should be his or be the prohibitive favorite. Solid blocking up front or no, Streveler sure didn't seem to let the moment get to him. -

Most young QBs who've been developed and put out on the market have had good O-lines to train behind. -

And Streveler is younger than he was coming into the league IIRC. And btw, I don't think it's too early to get excited about a backup. I mean really, we're not talking about a starter. This team is Nichols's and will remain such hopefully for a long time. But I've had the belief we can put out our own groomed QB into the market like Collaros or the aforementioned Franklin, and Streveler sure looks like a good bet to do it. Just hopefully we'll have him a couple seasons as the injury insurance policy -
One preseason game, but 10/10 looks pretty damn good, and I'd certainly take him to backup Nichols over Ross. Hopefully he's not simply another Robert Marve, but if he's not in injury troubled, I think we just might have our insurance guy just in case anything happens to Matt.

Hooaahhh ... Looks like my hunch was right.
-
True, but doesn't mean it's the end of the line yet for Davis.
-
Well, maybe they figure he's another Brandon Bridge who was given up on a little too soon by MTL.
-
True. I'd say right now our backup spot behind Nichols is wide open and nobody should be the prohibitive favorite. I'd like to see us build a homegrown QB though. Feel like we had a few prospects in the past that we just never quite fully saw through.
-
I fear he may not be. I won't say I'm bummed about letting Davis go, but the fact that Ottawa brought him over and thinks he still might get it is pretty telling. He did look a little slow making some of his passes and took a few unnecessary sacks, but our receiving corps was also decimated so that may have had something to do with it as well. I think he should have gotten all of that game against BC and the last one against Calgary to get one more shot to redeem himself. It was a waste of time to play LeFevour since he was gonna get axed once the season was over anyway. I didn't like what I saw out of Ross when he was spelling off Jennings. Course he was kinda just thrown in there and told to make that team go with little time to learn the ropes, but Buono obviously saw enough of that. I'm kinda leaning towards Streveler. Guy is young but seemed to have some decent numbers in college and has a clean slate coming here.
-
He may have been hired as that, but he seems to have slowly weasled his way to a position of high influence in the office and potentially calling the shots even if from behind the curtain. Everything they're doing in MTL pretty closely resembles the masterpiece that was going on here 5 years ago.
-
While Reed is a sucky GM, I'm really starting to think he's only there in name and Mack is essentially running his office. Just given the crazy moves they've been making from bringing in Sherman to this goofy QB situation, Mack's fingerprints appear to be all over it.
-
Montreal continues to find ways to bring their circus show to new levels. I just am befuddled beyond all getup. First off, why would you hire a head coach who's not been in pro or college football for 5 years now and whose best days are well behind him? He's had zero CFL pedigree to top it all off. You go trying to teach 2 old dogs with Freeman at age 30 and Sherman at age 63 new tricks, I guarantee you it's not going to work. I'd say right now the only thing that's going to get them back up is a long, slow and painful 3-year rebuilding process like what we did with O'Shea. Otherwise, high-value free agents like James Franklin and sought after HC candidates like Lapolice will continue to turn them down.
-
I believe that's his plan. He knows right now with all his baggage that nobody's going to take him down there without definitive proof that he no longer spends too much of his down time partying hard and not putting in work. That's what happens he definitely got shown in the NFL. He likely decided to go head and give the CFL a spin when he heard Trent Richardson was up here. Saw a lot of the guy in college and the reason I never bought the NFL hype on him was that he made too much of a living ad-libbing every play. Kind of a backyard football QB who ran around and just fired the ball at will though in particular to current Bucs' receiver Mike Evans. Once he tried that in the NFL, he learned he couldn't do it. My guess is Masoli remains the starter for now in Hamilton, but the pressure will be mounting on his head. Now ... I actually do think Manziel has more raw talent than Masoli in that he's a faster runner with a stronger arm. What he may not have is Masoli's work ethic or his football smarts just given what I've seen of his decision-making in his last go-round.

This is why I've been tough on Richie Hall.

Even though Durant had 2 good games against us last year, every other time he was on that field he looked cooked. And besides, if we're going to get a safety valve just in case something happened to Nichols, I don't want a guy who's been hurt way more than he has over the last few years. My main concern on offense is build depth in that WR core so that we're not stuck with duds like Lankford if something happens to D Adams or Dressler again. As to our MLB position ... Well at this point I'll take anyone who does something more than just run into blockers. Hard to imagine Hurl's replacement will be worse than him. Anyway, thank God he's gone as well as old noodle arm LeFevour
