Actually, you do not. There's a form of enhanced ID you can get. There's more than a bit of paranoia going on in the US these days, that is, more than usual. As surprising number of Americans still think the 911 attackers came through Canada.

Cahoon was born in the US to Canadian parents - that automatically gave him Canadian citizenship. He grew up in Alberta. Under the definition of a non-import at the time he qualified. Under the current definition of a national player there would be no doubt that he would qualify.
