Warren Davidson (R-Ohio) is facing deep scrutiny after insisting that the United States could see an uptick in mass shootings with arrows if guns are banned. During a recent news interview, CNN's Pamela Brown asked Davidson if he could admit "that mass shooting could not happen" without guns. The Republican lawmaker dismissed Brown's argument and, instead, focused on a different hypothetical scenario. He pondered the possibility of mass shootings occurring with arrows if guns end up being banned. As the clip of the interview began circulating on Twitter, social media users quickly chimed in to share their criticism of Davidson. "Yeah, no such thing as an 'assault crossbow,' though," one Twitter user pointed out. "So it kinda takes a lot longer to kill as many people..." https://www.alternet.org/2022/06/lawmaker-mocked-mass-shootings-arrows/ That's the thing though - the history of gun rights in the US goes back to a time when the guns we have today did not exist. It is hard to do a mass shooting with an inaccurate muzzle loader. Everything around the debate has changed, yet the pro-gun argument remains the same.

"Fifty years ago, an American lawyer called Lewis Powell Jr. wrote a memo for the US Chamber of Commerce that deserves to be better remembered than it is. It was to become the blueprint for a “hostile takeover” of US economic and political life by a wealthy, conservative elite. Fifty years on, the threats to America’s “free enterprise system” that worried Powell — high taxes, government regulation and a powerful labour movement — have been well and truly defanged. In no small part, this is a result of the way that the strategy Powell set out in his 1971 memo was operationalised by its most influential reader: Charles Koch, CEO (then and now) of Koch Industries, America’s largest privately-owned company. Over the intervening decades, Koch (along with a handful of other hyper-wealthy Americans) has funded and organised a campaign to (in the words of one historian) ‘save capitalism from democracy — permanently.’ That campaign, as Powell recommended, has been waged on multiple fronts: in academia, the media, politics and the judiciary. Its success has relied on a near-perfect alignment of ideology and self-interest — and a ruthless persistence on Koch’s part." https://medium.com/volans/how-the-powell-memorandum-changed-capitalism-and-what-we-can-learn-from-it-today-d2ce10234f82 Kochs invested a lot of money in supreme court judge trump appointment Gorsuch, who is an anti regulation extremist. yeah, Garland is doing nothing. as is Biden, Pelosi, Schumer. bravely singing songs. It is hard to do a mass shooting with an inaccurate muzzle loader. Everything around the debate has changed, yet the pro-gun argument remains the same. There is reason to believe that the roots of this gun mania in the US go waaay back to the time of the American revolution. There is evidence that one of the biggest reason for the rebellion against British rule was that Britain outlawed slavery at that time and since the majority of agricultural and other work was being done by slaves imported for that reason, the loss of those slaves would have been ruinous to the owners. Moreover, the colonials had good reason to believe that the British were not above re-invading the American colonies and bringing them to heel again. So, maintaining an armed populace was a good idea for them. But local militias right after the war of independence were formed specifically to track down, capture and return runaway slaves to their previous owners. Even after the establishment of the Macon-Dixon line, these militias were permitted to pursue the fleeing slaves right into states and territories where slavery was no longer allowed. After civil war, the southern slave states were no longer allowed to have slaves, but it took years for all of the slaves to be freed, and the southerners kept the militias as acts of defiance under the mottos, "The South will rise again"- ie: that these states would regain their independence from America by force one day. The culture of victimhood has persisted to this day and so has the fantasy of rebellion and devotion to firearms. TrueBlue4ever and WildPath 2

John Yarmuth’s (D-Ky.) office. Chad Meredith, the attorney, has previously served as Kentucky’s solicitor general and represented a number of Kentucky’s top GOP officials in cases curbing abortion access and COVID-19 public health measures. Meredith represented Kentucky’s then-Gov. Matt Bevin (R) in a 2019 legal battle against an abortion clinic, saying at one point that effectively eliminating access to abortion in the state would have a negligible impact on women seeking the procedure. He also defended a 2017 state law requiring doctors to perform an ultrasound and describe the image to a patient before providing an abortion, according to the Louisville Courier Journal, which first reported the news of his pending nomination. Christopher Schuler, Yarmuth’s communications director, told The Hill that White House staff informed the congressman of Biden’s intent to nominate Meredith, but declined to provide further comment to The Hill.

Mark F Posted June 30, 2022 Report Posted June 30, 2022 (edited) "Progressive powerhouse Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez warned Thursday that the United States is "witnessing a judicial coup in progress," a reaction by the Democratic congresswoman to a raft of highly consequential Supreme Court rulings and the justices' scheduled hearing of a critical voting rights case. "All our leaders—regardless of party—must recognize this constitutional crisis for what it is." "If the president and Congress do not restrain the Court now, the Court is signaling they will come for the presidential election next," Ocasio-Cortez (N.Y.) tweeted in response to news that the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in Moore v. Tracker Posted July 1, 2022 Report Posted July 1, 2022 Texas educators propose changing 'slavery' to 'involuntary relocation' to pacify Republicans An advisory group of Texas educators has proposed changing the word “slavery” to “involuntary relocation” after the Texas State Board of Education directed them to examine how to implement a new law, signed by Gov. Greg Abbott, banning the teaching of topics that would make students “feel discomfort.” The group, comprised of nine educators, made the proposal for second-grade social studies instruction, but “board members have asked them to reconsider the phrasing, according to the state board’s chair,” The Texas Tribune reports. State Board of Education Member Aicha Davis told the Tribune, that calling slavery “involuntary relocation” is “not going to be acceptable.” “Part of the proposed social studies curriculum standards outlines that students should ‘compare journeys to America, including voluntary Irish immigration and involuntary relocation of African people during colonial times,'” the Tribune notes. https://www.alternet.org/2022/07/texas-educators-slavery-involuntary-relocation/
