Apparently Trump believes that if he declares his candidacy, he will somehow immune from prosecution. There is no basis in law for this or even an arguable possibility of winning but that sort of thing has never stopped Trump before. He has, in the past, used the courts to intimidate others or at least delay things so that his adversary(s) will tire out. He will have a surprise or two coming.

It seems like they have decided to emphatically demonstrate that a certain class of people are above the law.

 

This is all just so f*ucking frustrating, maddening, bewildering, exhausting to us common folk.

To add to your point, it feels like the people in charge of upholding the law think they're doing their jobs by exposing it but then do nothing because of who you are.

A couple of interesting things about Trump and the GOP: during Trump's 66 minutes of verbal diarrhea yesterday, security was filmed refusing to allow people to leave, and many did want to do so. The GOP is following the typical path of implosion when a party allows extremists to influence policy and direction- the extreme faction becomes more and more extreme and then the more moderate members start to resist and then the party splits down the middle. There may be a temporary reconciliation after a loss.

Democrats will still have a narrow majority in the U.S. Senate, and they may even expand it slightly if incumbent Sen. But Republicans will have a narrow House majority — probably in the single digits, according to the New York Times.

On Tuesday, November 15, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy was nominated for House speaker, a position presently held by Democrat Nancy Pelosi. And Pelosi, according to Washington Post reporter Jacqueline Alemany, is likely to be a target of Republican House investigations in 2023.

In a tweet posted on November 17, Alemany, noting reporting from the New York Times’ Carl Hulse, reported, “In a closed-door meeting of Republicans on Monday, right-wing lawmakers including MTG extracted a promise that their leaders would investigate Pelosi & the DOJ for their treatment of defendants jailed in connection w the Jan. 6…”

A Republican political operative was convicted of illegally funneling a Russian businessman’s contributions to Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign. Jesse Benton, 44, a onetime aide to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), former congressman Ron Paul (R-TX), and Paul’s son, Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), worked with another consultant to shift money from the Russian national, who was seeking to meet and take a photo with Trump, according to The Washington Post. The Russian reportedly sent $100,000 to Benton, who was working for a pro-Trump political action committee in 2016. He used $25,000 to cover the cost of a ticket a Republican National Committee event, which got the Russian his picture with Trump. Benton claimed he’d earned the $100,000 acting as a guide to Washington, D.C. for the Russian, the Post reported. The 44-year-old was previously pardoned by Trump in 2020 for a separate campaign finance crime. Just months later, he was indicted on the charges that would lead to Thursday’s conviction, including conspiring to solicit and cause an illegal campaign contribution by a foreign national. “He knew the law,”

Kyle Rittenhouse, the rifle-wielding teenager who shot two unarmed racial justice protesters to death in Kenosha, Wisconsin, two years ago, met with members of the GOP Second Amendment House caucus on Thursday.

Rittenhouse, found not guilty of homicide charges last year for killings his lawyers argued were self-defense, met with members of the pro-gun caucus at a gathering at the Conservative Partnership Institute office near the Capitol.

On Thursday, Judd Legum laid out in his Popular Information blog the full extent to which the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has poured money into the Trump family — as former President Donald Trump launches his third consecutive campaign for the White House ahead of 2024.

"The coverage of his announcement was broadly critical, focusing on the poor results of the candidates he endorsed in the 2022 midterms. Reports also noted some other issues complicating Trump's run, including his role in fomenting an insurrection and the federal criminal investigation into his handling of classified documents," reported Legum. "These stories virtually ignored one of the most significant developments since Trump left the White House: his expanding financial relationship with Saudi Arabia. Since Trump left office, entities controlled by the Saudi government, a repressive regime responsible for the murder of U.S.-based journalist Jamal Khashoggi, have sent billions to Trump and his family members."

The total investment from the Saudis, Legum estimated, is in the "billions."

To begin with, wrote Legum, "The Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) has spent billions creating LIV, a new golf tour. Two of LIV's eight tournaments in 2022 were held at Trump-owned golf courses, including the season-ending championship at Trump Doral in Florida." Then there is the PIF's investment into Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, through his real estate business: "The full board of PIF, led by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, overruled the committee's recommendation and decided to invest $2 billion. Under the deal, Kushner will receive a $25 million annual management fee, plus a percentage of any profits." This deal was approved by the Saudi royals over the objections of PIF officials who recommended against it.

And then there is another Trump licensing deal in the works with a private company closely linked to the Saudi royals, Legum continued: "Earlier this week, Trump 'struck a deal with a Saudi-based real estate company to license its name to a housing and golf complex that will be built in Oman.' The agreement was made 'with Dar Al Arkan, one of Saudi Arabia's largest real estate companies, for the project.' Under the arrangement, Trump will receive 'a cut of condo sales or golf course revenue in exchange for allowing its name to be used.' The proceeds could be considerable since the project is estimated to cost $1.6 billion and 'will include an estimated 3,500 residential units, luxury retail and 450 rooms at the hotels.'"
