Foreperson Lifts The Lid On Trump Grand Jury That Probed Election Meddling

ATLANTA (AP) — They were led down a staircase into a garage beneath a downtown Atlanta courthouse, where officers with big guns were waiting. From there, they were ushered into vans with heavily tinted windows and driven to their cars under police escort.

For Emily Kohrs, these were the moments last May when she realized she wasn’t participating in just any grand jury. “That was the first indication that this was a big freaking deal,” Kohrs told The Associated Press.

The 30-year-old Fulton County resident who was between jobs suddenly found herself at the center of one of the nation’s most significant legal proceedings.

She would become foreperson of the special grand jury selected to investigate whether then-President Donald Trump and his Republican associates illegally meddled in Georgia’s 2020 presidential election. The case has emerged as one of Trump’s most glaring legal vulnerabilities as he mounts a third presidential campaign, in part because he was recorded asking state election officials to “find 11,780 votes” for him.

For the next eight months, Kohrs and her fellow jurors would hear testimony from 75 witnesses, ranging from some of Trump’s most prominent allies to local election workers.

Portions of the panel’s final report released last Thursday said jurors believed that “one or more witnesses” committed perjury and urged local prosecutors to bring charges. The report’s recommendations for charges on other issues, including potential attempts to influence the election, remain secret for now.

They obviously released that part of the grand jury report in order to pressure those that lied to flip. We'll see what happens. These would be State charges and Presidential pardons wouldn't work.

Russel Brand once stirred up the news by stating that he didn't understand why people bothered to vote anymore. Apathetic to it all. If you vote one side it's corrupt, if you vote the other it's corrupt.

This is going to sound radical to some but I'm really having a tough time buying a real democratic society, especially in the USA. When you have big donors and private funds funneling money into these parties you have to really question the legitimacy. Not to mention that these politicians are just doing what they have to do to keep themselves in office. 

I should be fact checked on this but I've heard before that the party who's had the most money has won every.single.election

It's not about right or wrong it's about staying in for another 4 years. For **** sakes, look at Pelosis net worth and tell me there isn't shady dealings going on ie: insider trading.

When you have a country of 365 million people and its decided before the election that it will be either one of red or blue, then it's questionable to me. Especially when the 2 representing those parties are either a crazy man, or a man with dementia

Alaska Republican state Representative David Eastman stunned his fellow lawmakers on Monday when he declared society benefits when children who are so badly abused die, because there’s less financial cost to the state for their care.

“In the case where child abuse is fatal, obviously it’s not good for the child, but it’s actually a benefit to society because there aren’t needed government services and whatnot over the whole course of that child’s life,” Rep. Eastman said (video below) during a hearing of the Judiciary Committee, as the Anchorage Daily News reports.

When pressed, he continued, saying: “Talking dollars, now you’ve got a $1.5 million price tag here for victims of fatal child abuse. It gets argued periodically that it’s actually a cost savings because that child is not going to need any of those government services that they might otherwise you know, be entitled to receive and need based on, you know, growing up in this type of environment.”

Trevor Storrs, president and CEO of the Alaska Children’s Trust who was testifying at the hearing countered, “I’m really, I’m not even sure how to answer that, that there’s a cost saving to fit that to the death of a child. The impact that that has on a family and us as a society, when a child is lost, especially to child abuse, neglect is unmeasurable and it’s it’s a hugely tragic.”

Eastman is a MAGA chudstar. There's a clause in the Alaska constitution that says basically "seditionists are not allowed to be legislators."  He was a 1/6 participant and so some Alaskans sued to have him removed from his seat.  He won and is staying, and needs to stay in the headlines I guess.

I would have way more respect for him if carried his modest proposal all the way thru and recommended a state program to collect the remains of the dead children tax burdens and process them into food.

Take a look at what they do where they have unified control.  Dems in Michigan and Minnesota are going wild with legislation.  Blues states are passing abortion protections like crazy.  Look the federal Inflation Reduction Act, passed under unified federal dem control -- it does a massive amount of stuff.

For me the Dems sums up to "incremental social progress that the establishment approves of and that doesn't threaten too many revenue streams."  It's maddening but in a two-party system, it's the best we got.

When a politician/ government official intentionally, knowingly tries to thwart democracy they need to be charged and dealt with harshly. Every time I hear things like this I think of the woman who thought she could vote ( an election official said she could ) despite having been in jail.They slammed her with 5 years in prison

Representative Sarah Vance, the Republican who claims the House Judiciary Committee, said Easterman, who doesn't serve on any committees, had been at the hearing "at my invitation."

According to the Anchorage Daily News, she added: "I wished that he asked questions with a little bit more sensitivity to the listeners and how they're perceived, and I can have that conversation.

"But he's there on his own accord and only represents himself."

Vance later suggested Eastman had been trying to make an argument against abortion, which some consider to be "child abuse."

Speaking with the Anchorage Daily News via text message, Eastman said: "I was pleased to hear ACT advocating against child abuse, but a child's value comes not from future productivity, but from the fact that every child is made in the image of God."

Newsweek has contacted Eastman to ask if he stands by his original remarks.

Eastman, a former soldier, was reelected to the Alaska House of Representatives in November 2022.

A lawsuit was filed attempting unsuccessfully to bar Eastman from office due to his membership of the Oath Keepers, a right-wing paramilitary group.

A number of Oath Keepers have been convicted over their role in the storming of Congress on January 6 2021, it a bid to stop the 2020 presidential election result being certified.

Eastman was present in Washington, D.C. that day but there is no indication he took part in the disturbances, which he condemned. He later promoted a discredited conspiracy theory, suggesting the violence could have been committed by left-wing movement Antifa.

FL GOP bill would 'allow government officials to harass and bankrupt' opposers with defamation lawsuits

Florida GOP State Rep. Alex Andrade proposed a bill that would simplify the process for fellow Republican officials, like Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, to file defamation lawsuits against media and other "critics," Truthout reports.

Per Tampa Bay Times, Andrade's legislation reflects one of DeSantis' "key priorities."

Regarding defamation law, the United States Supreme Court New York Times v. Sullivan decision states, according to Tampa Bay Times, for one "to win damages from a defamation case, public figures — i.e., famous people, elected officials, etc. — have to prove publishers disseminated information knowing it was false, or with 'reckless disregard' for the truth." Proving the outlet published false information is not enough

However, the state representative argues, Truthout reports:  H.B. 951 laments that the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark ruling in New York Times v. Sullivan has 'foreclosed many meritorious defamation claims to the detriment of citizens of all walks of life' by placing such claims under the purview of the federal government and establishing a high standard of proof.

However, the Oyez Project says the ruling maintains “to sustain a claim of defamation or libel, the First Amendment requires that the plaintiff show that the defendant knew that a statement was false or was reckless in deciding to publish the information without investigating whether it was accurate.”

First Amendment lawyer and Director of Advocacy for Freedom of the Press Foundation (FPF), Seth Stern said," DeSantis continues to make clear his disdain for freedom of speech and the press and to prioritize censoring dissent over governing."

Similarly, another First Amendment attorney, Floyd Abrams, noted in a Law&Crime interview "it's blackletter law that a state cannot constitutionally provide less protection in libel litigation than the First Amendment requires." Cornell University defines "blackletter law" as "the well-established legal rules that are certain and no longer disputable."

Trump Totally Embarrassed Himself In East Palestine

Donald Trump put the capper on his trip to East Palestine, OH, by telling potentially poisoned people to have a good time and have fun.  Trump also showed up with some branded bottled water, and because the people are his white supporters, he threw MAGA hats at them. 
If you are white, you get a MAGA hat. If you are brown or black, duck because a roll of household cleaning products are being flung in your general direction.

The whole point of Trump’s trip was to get some free cable news coverage, of which he got none.  Donald Trump treated a train derailment with unknown long-term environmental and human consequences, like a wedding reception that he crashed at Mar-a-Lago.

The man is utterly incapable of acting like a normal human being, much less a president, for a minute.
