Statistics Canada is about to require Canada’s nine biggest banks and credit unions to turn over highly personal data about their customers and not tell the customer. That includes name, address, social insurance number and every single banking transaction that person does in a year.

Reminder that the former Stats Can CEO resigned in 2016 after the Liberals took power over concerns about the autonomy of the department.

Granted this article and his resignation was about IT infrastructure at the time, but if Stats Can is going to be collecting this level of detail of data and be put on servers that are not entirely in their control, every Canadian should have huge concerns over this.

Even if Stats Can had a valid reason to collect this banking information (I don't believe the data they will be able to provide from it justifies the need to do this), there is no reason for them to collect SIN, address, and identifiable information along with it.   Having this information anonymized at source and reconciled to Postal Code should be more then sufficient for what they need.

Have to ask what the real motivation is here.  This is absolutely ridiculous and an invasion of citizen privacy that is usually reserved for Communist or Dictatorship regimes.

Good point - this is more in line with what Justin's dad would have done, but I didn't expect the 2.0 version to do this too.  The Liberals are getting more and more arrogant every day.  Their actions including calling the Conservatives "ambulance chasers" on the Tori Stafford issue really is showing how out of touch with Canadians they are getting.

Americans are rightly concerned about Russia hacking into U.S. government emails. Well, this appears to be much worse

In total, the 114 third parties spent $6 million and many of those third parties were funded by California-and New York-based Tides Foundation — which is known in Canada for holding numerous anti-Canadian oil campaigns.

In 2015, Tides Foundation donated $1.5 million of U.S. money to Canadian third parties in the election year, according to the report.

"Here, Ford is clearly borrowing from the playbooks of former prime minister Stephen Harper and U.S. President Donald Trump. For Ford, as for Harper and Trump, abolishing independent agencies has little, if anything, to do with saving money. The Ontario Conservative government’s real purpose is to silence independent voices that are not 100-per-cent onside with its agenda."

In a nutshell, "modern" conservatism.
