Fred C Dobbs Posted May 18, 2017 Report Posted May 18, 2017 You gotta read this: Quote There wasn’t a scared-straight epiphany moment for Spooner. It wasn’t seeing friends in the back of police cars, or having an accusatory finger pointed at him when lockers in his high school were broken into, or when word of drugs being sold on campus got to the authorities. The staff at Centennial High School didn’t know exactly who it was, Spooner says, so they’d suspend a group of kids; him and his friends. He bristled in his chair as he thought about how, as the trouble had piled up, he left his school earlier in 2008. “We want to try to see if we can get Qadr in a better direction,” Spooner says, reciting the proposal that came from his school. “We’re going to send him to an alternate program called ‘Transitions’ and in that program he’ll be focusing on academics. There’ll be a reduced number of students so they can focus on him.” He landed in that classroom with other similar-aged kids deemed at risk of dropping out. A voice broke the silence in the classroom that morning. A teacher, Mrs. Harrison, who, if not as lost in thought as Spooner, was at least as hungry. She asked her student if he wanted to go for lunch. She took him to an all-you-can-eat buffet (A wise move, all things considered). Spooner still marvels at the mountain of shrimp that she put on her plate. He told her she could get up and get more if she wanted. Why get up, she asked him. An unexpected lesson in an unexpected situation. There were many of them for him. https://www.cfl.ca/2017/05/18/oleary-spooners-road-pros-hard-rewarding/ kelownabomberfan, Mike, JCon and 2 others 5

blue_gold_84 Posted May 18, 2017 Report Posted May 18, 2017 Quite the read. Thanks for sharing! I hope they manage to sign him soon. He seems to have a lot of potential and you can never have enough O-line depth, especially of the NAT variety. the watcher 1
ddanger Posted May 19, 2017 Report Posted May 19, 2017 He says he's coming to Winnipeg, so he'll sign. Faith and now Qadr. Two solid, solid kids. Those are the kind of players I want to see the team draft and develop. Just like Schiefle, Laine and Morrissey. Intelligent, mature, decent kids who will grow into men and not go off the rails. Very much going to be cheering for Faith & Qadr to make the team. Thanks for sharing this article. blue_gold_84, Brandon, SPuDS and 4 others 7

Judd Posted May 22, 2017 Report Posted May 22, 2017 Is every "entry level" contract in the CFL 3 years?
LeBird Posted May 22, 2017 Report Posted May 22, 2017 When you see what is happening elsewhere it sure is nice to have all of our drafts signed thanks to a professional management.

Pretty sure Chungh signed for 3, he just extended early... No, every entry level contract is not 3 years, but Mr. Walters seems to be able to get guys to commit to that. Which is just another example of his awesomeness. Walters gets our DP to sign 3 year deals, Jones can't even get them to sign at all...
rebusrankin Posted May 22, 2017 Report Posted May 22, 2017 Dang Walters signing Spooner just ruins the salary scale for second rounders. I hear Bladzek wants more now. SPuDS 1

Seems like Walters is batting around 500 for signing top picks to 3 years. For example, I haven't seen any info that shows Loffler or Corney signed for 3 years.

But walters said in an interview mid way through last year and suhk had signed an extension. Dont think it was announced before that at all. Dont know if it ever came out how long hes extended. But it was a huge sigh of relief and win for us.
