WINNIPEG, MB., October 4, 2017 –  The Winnipeg Blue Bombers today announce the club has added quarterbacks Josh Straughan and David Washington, defensive backs Jordan Bowman and Antoine Tharpe, linebacker Jevaris Jones, and (national) defensive tackle Ian Marouf.

Straughan (6-2, 203, Southern Illinois University, May 2, 1994 in Colton, WA) played one season with the Salukis, starting eight games, after transferring from Division II Stillman College. He threw for 2,429 yards and 15 touchdowns while only throwing four interceptions.

Washington (6-3, 210, Old Dominion University, September 15, 1994 in Raleigh, N.C.) played four seasons with the Old Dominion University Monarchs, including starting 16 games at wide receiver. In his senior season, he started all 13 games at quarterback and threw for 2,836 yards, 31 touchdowns and only five interceptions. He was also named a Conference USA Honorable Mention.

Bowman (6-0, 210, California University of Pennsylvania, October 28, 1994 in Harrisburg, PA) played in all 44 games over four seasons with the Vulcans. He made 170 tackles and added 13 interceptions in his collegiate career and was selected to the All-PSAC West Second-Team in his senior season.

Tharpe (5-10, 175, University of Massachusetts, July 16, 1992 in Lauderhill, FL) played four seasons with the Minutemen, including 11 games in his senior season where he recorded 49 tackles. For the last three years, Tharpe has played in the Indoor Football League, most recently for the Spokane Empire.

Jones (6-1, 228, Shorter University, January 18, 1995 in Griffin, GA) played three seasons with the Hawks. Amongst his 235 career tackles, he made 106 in his final season and finished second in Division II with 80 solo tackles. Jones signed with the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent this May, but was later waived.

Marouf (6-3, 210, University of Guelph, March 28, 1992 in Fort Erie, ON) was drafted by the Bombers in the sixth round, 50th overall, in the 2017 CFL Draft. After playing just one season with the University of Guelph Gryphons, Marouf played with the Hamilton Hurricanes in the Canadian Junior Football League during the 2015/2016 season and recorded 25 tackles in seven games.

The team has also released international defensive back Zavian Bingham from the practice roster.

I enjoyed watching some of the games, that were broadcast last season, live on youtube.

I'm sure the games are somewhat enjoyable in itself. I watched the AFL championship last year and it wasn't half bad, but still waaaay prefer actual field football.  Maybe it's just the look of that turf in the highlight clip but it looked funny and off. waaay to tiny for my liking

Its gonna take a heckuva transition for Jones as a linebacker to move from arena football to the humongous (by comparison) CFL field.

Might get winded just walking side line to side line. Hah!

Straughan looks interesting, nice arm him, in this video looks like no effort at all to hit a deep pass quickly and on the money

Good release, quick foot work, good arm in general. See some dropping of the arm angle, and some flippy dippy type risky plays that wont keep you in reps at the pro level. Strong and quick enough though looks like a good athlete.  Like that hes seen a lot of gun/pistol and isnt out of sorts throwing on the run.

cant find a clip for Bowman other then highschool clips

good god look at those IFL rink fields

And not much on Jevaris Jones either

Wow washington looks raw.  Too bad he didnt get to stay at QB and develop the whole time. Throws a nice catchable ball, good accuracy and touch. Its a bit surprising considering his foot work and release point / arm angle look a bit erratic. Could be a  fantastic throw on the run guy eventually. carries the ball low a lot. Neither have blow your socks off stuff. But both have some upside.  Washington has the most upside and the most work.

Plays a lot like Damon Allen in his prime. But does he have the smarts to run only when necessary?

Cant say for sure, normally would worry about wild cat usage.  But with a flanders + harris offense + our smith package its actually and advantage.  I think at best they pick one of these guys commit to him and hes the 4th in camp next year. More likely both are gone in a few weeks ala apodaca and many others.

Why are they bringing in QBs? Is this a signal that Dom Davis won't be here next season?

Dont put too much read on to it. I would think some of these players will come and gone... just like Bingham.

cause you can never have too many qbs. Bring in young guys and if they are worth keeping around you do it. I mean really what's the point of keeping The Fever around long term?

They always bring in QBs.  It's more unusual that we didn't have a fourth for the bulk of the season.  I expect only one of these two will last more than a week.

Hey, if LeFevour is happy in his role hang on to him.  Do you think Davis is going to be happy sitting around waiting for Nichols to go down for another 2-3 years?

Washington has one of the most bizarre releases I’ve seen and he carries the ball almost at his knees when he’s running.  How many fumbles did he have in NCAA?

Would be interesting to see those mechanics in a preseason game against pros.

Bizarre signing period.  When was the last time a QB that plays more like a RB had any success in the CFL?  They could save some money by cutting him before he gets on the airplane.

well it did say he played 16 games as a WR... maybe Lapo wants to run more of those Lankford tosses but wants a QB that can catch - though to Nichols credit he does have the 1 reception for a TD last year . Imagine a QB that can get downfield in a hurry from the snap and catch a deep ball...

We're playing one tomorrow.  I doubt that he'll ever be successful, but he's won a few games.

Annual event.  Practise roster gets expanded.  Expect half of these guys to be back for mini-camp next year.  Perhaps one or two will get a look late in the season, but not likely since we're having a season where those late games will still matter.  Dom Davis' job is not in any jeopardy.
